  Binary package hint: xorg

Loaded 10.10 from update/upgrade process (very time consuming), and Live CD.
Same symptoms.
I expected to use Ubuntu Desktop after providing a Correct Password.
Instead, after briefly seeing a desktop almost completely appear, the display
re-exhibits the login screen.

I expected the Ubuntu Safe Mode to fail similarly.
Instead, It logged in but there were GUI features that were locked (User
modification dialogs, delete users).

- Following suggestions from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs
+ Following suggestions from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs
  startX indicated xserver already running...
was able to adduser, but after reboot - sudo password was disabled for added
user and About Me window was first noted package that failed to open. Other
packages were fine, password using packages failed to open.

- upon 10.10 reload from Live CD -
+ upon 10.10 reload from Live CD -
login loop occured for Ubuntu Desktop option - accepted login/password -
opened Desktop - returned to login screen
recovery mode option - accepted login/password - startx - Server already
active.
