[Bug 58386] Re: ACPI: Looking for DSDT ... not found! (message during boot)
Re-opening (I think). Even if this is not a real error (ie, if not having a DSDT is a normal situation), this is still a user-interface bug: it should not be reported as a boot-time error. The message should be changed to something more descriptive, like file /DSDT.aml not found, using defaults or whatever is appropriate. I couldn't find any recent docs on this, what is it supposed to do, anyway? I'm always having issues with ACPI and I'm always on the look for hacks. Is there anything I can do (ie, compile a file) and perhaps include it in a package to help support my laptop type better (Dell Latitude D620). I'm attaching 2.6.22 too, as I still get this message on Gutsy with the newest kernel. ** Also affects: linux-source-2.6.22 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.15 (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New -- ACPI: Looking for DSDT ... not found! Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs effectively [WWW] http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems. [Bug 133115] Re: every 21st boot my system gets checked
Thank you for your suggestion. However, the changes you are requesting aren't really a bug and require more discussion, which should be done on an appropriate mailing list or forum. [WWW] http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/mailinglists might be a good start for determining which mailing list to use. Even if you do not agree with this feature, it is a feature, and is the default. Therefore, this bug has been marked as invalid. Feel free to discuss your views further on the mailing lists, as they are welcome. But let me add this as well, just to help you understand what is going on... Do you have any statistics of desktop computers that prove that this is required or was this feature chosen because someone just found it useful? From wikipedia - A journaling file system is designed such that tools such as fsck do not need to be run as often. Notice it doesn't say at all. This is a proactive step to avoid possible issues, and most users would much rather run that, and not have an issue, then run into a larger problem down the road. Also, it is fairly easy to alter the settings. If in your case the scan takes too long, you have the ability to change the settings. But for myself (on many many computers) and for others I know, the scan takes but a minute or so. Also, you can't tell every user to go to the console to turn this annoying feature off. People coming from Windows will find this annoying and it definitely doesn't make Linux more user-friendly to them. It is far better then trying to explain to them how to manually run 'fsck' from a LiveCD, etc. Seriously, this can't be called a feature. I've never seen any other operating system do this. Why does Windows not need this? Why does Ubuntu need this? Doesn't Ubuntu have a journalling file system? Then, why should this check be done, at all? Windows absolutely runs a check as well as OSX. Remember back in the day, pre-XP, you would boot to the annoying ScanDisk. Or even with XP, with the lovely blue disk checking screen (and no that doesn't ONLY run due to a bad shutdown). The Windows scan takes forever... Hope this better relays the methodology behind 'fsck', It is far better to run an auto-check, then wait and have a problem. Thanks, Justin M. [Bug 133115] Re: every 21st boot my system gets checked
I really don't want to go through the hassle of joining a mailing list, getting 50 mails per day, and discussing this one week long (esp. since I'm sure that there will be incredibly many people who think that this feature is necessary and that it's no problem at all to go to the command line and turn that feature off, although actually only experts will be able to do that). I guess I will wait some more, get more annoyed, and then my motivation is high enough to start that flame war... :) It is far better then trying to explain to them how to manually run 'fsck' from a LiveCD, etc. IMHO, it's better to tell someone what to do when he has a problem instead of impose a problem on all of us. I bet that the number of people with a problem that couldn't be fixed by running fsck on failure is far smaller than those without a problem, at all. I've never seen that blue disk checking screen in the last two years (though, I remember having it seen before). I'm serious. Maybe that's because I used NTFS... Even when I crashed the system it didn't need a check. Seriously, I'm not making this up. Hope this better relays the methodology behind 'fsck', It is far better to run an auto-check, then wait and have a problem. Thanks for taking the time to explain this. I do agree that a check could be necessary after a crash, but the check, as configured by default, is running far too often. The fact that there exists a manual on how to turn that feature off (targeted at laptop users) should actually make people suspicious. Could you please at least consider running fsck less often (by a factor of ten would be nice :)? -- every 21st boot my system gets checked https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/133115 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems. http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). [Bug 67110] Re: Kernel instabilty on Medion MD41300 with Hyperthreading enabled / Mobile Pentium 4 HT 3.06Ghz
I experience the same problems on the MD41300 right now on Feisty. It freezes very often a day (sometimes even every few minutes). I wonder if this could be solved by simply booting with nosmp? (or add ht=off, because it shows 2 CPUs in System Monitor even you said HT is disabled by default) I tried already disabling Hyperthreading in BIOS. Only one CPU showed up in System Monitor and everything worked fine but my wireless connection. It did not work anymore (Prism54/isl3890 card with ndiswrapper): it connects to the AP and then looses connection again and again. By the way, booting in Windows with HT disabled heats up my CPU very much when running mutliple programs. I will try to reinstall (I am running Debian Etch by now for half a day and it seems stable, but I do not like it as much as Ubuntu) Ubuntu Feisty Fawn with Hyperthreading disabled, then add the nosmp option and turn HT on again. Hopefully everything will work fine then. Does this seem to be a useful workaround to try? [Bug 96084] Re: boot - /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
Further hereto, (to recap): 1. I do have 3 older p-ata systems, completely incompatible, (and unworkable) with all versions of (k)ubuntu 7.04, including Linux Mint Cassandra, based on (k)ubuntu 7.04 2. Lindows/Linspire/Freespire has come out with Freespire 2.0.0.0, also completely based on (k)ubuntu 7.04 3. This Freespire 2.0.0.0 Live CD takes a long time to load 4. However, it resolves all issues with my older p-ata systems I do have an inimical attitude towards Lindows/Linspire/Freespire for being one of the distros having gone to bed with M$. Notwithstanding that, I must give them full credit for having resolved the p-ata problem. More power to them. [Bug 133152] mounts wrong partition on boot
Public bug reported: Kubuntu 7.04 (upgraded from 6.10) confuses partitions on different disks. Machine is configured to dual boot with XP. Normally, when I boot Kubuntu, the XP partition is mounted on /media/xp (I think I assigned that pathname during the initial install). But, some time ago I made a backup copy of the XP partition onto a USB disk drive (using gparted). Recently I happened to boot Kubuntu with the USB disk drive powered on and plugged in, and the backup copy of the XP partition on the USB disk was mounted in place of the original XP partition on the computer's main (SATA) disk. Very confusing until I looked carefully at the output of mount. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- mounts wrong partition on boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/133152 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
