Re: [Ubuntu-phone] possible regression con OTA-10 && GPS

2016-04-07 Thread Vic G

Hi Matthias!

Please follow this steps provided by Marco Costales to (try)get location:

1. Reboot
device

2. Make sure GPS is enabled in:
https://myapps.developer.ubuntu.com/site_media/appmedia/2016/03/x.png
https://myapps.developer.ubuntu.com/site_media/appmedia/2016/03/y.png
https://myapps.developer.ubuntu.com/site_media/appmedia/2016/03/z_1.png

Sensor status enabled here:
https://myapps.developer.ubuntu.com/site_media/appmedia/2016/03/z_1_1.png

3. Enable Wi-Fi but do not connect it to a WLAN (this way you enable
A-GPS) and should get location a bit faster.

4. Do not use 2 GPS apps at the same time(won't work, this is a bug

for OTA-11).

5. Please try to get location with uNav, always out doors.

Regards!

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Freedom Box and Syncing

2016-04-07 Thread Wayne Taylor
I like snappy ubuntu (from the little I have learned)

I like porta-box things, though I've heard that some boxes are 'more
free' than others but that's not a focused discussion for this email list.

I like how amazing owncloud works...

Based on everything here, it would seem logical to have, and in order of
priority:

a) carddav/cal dav

b) have owncloud client working and working awesome on ubuntu phone

c) have a safe 'porta-box' running ubuntu snappy and owncloud

'a' will solve everyone's calendar and contacts (including those who
wish to have their calendars and contacts pillaged by google)
'b' will solve all the backup and file sharing needs of the current
world (and do other cool things, too)
'c' will make everything awesomely private and portable

and all of this also convergence-ready so you don't have to change much
when that occurs in full.

thanks for the crash course as well, everyone. Exciting times.

[Ubuntu-phone] Landing team 07.04.16

2016-04-07 Thread Łukasz 'sil2100' Zemczak
Hello everyone,

My yesterday's estimations regarding OTA-10 for mako and flo were
slightly off as we won't be able to get the update rolling today. Simon
Fels swiftly prepared a fix for the aforementioned regression and it's
in the testing queue as we speak, but since the fix requires a rootfs
rebuild things will take a bit more time than I originally anticipated.
That's the risk of estimating things like this, especially with so many
moving parts... That being said - if of course nothing really unexpected
pops up - we *should* have everything ready tomorrow. We apologise and
ask our mako and flo users for a bit more patience!

Besides that the OTA-10 phased upgrades are finished for krillin,
vegetahd and arale. In case you still do not see the update notification
on one of these devices, try rebooting as OTA-9.1 still has a bug in
update discovery that can happen on certain cases [1]. This is fixed in
OTA-10 so no more issues like that in the future.
A few click packages are still locked in staging (unreleased to the
store) - we will flush them once the update is available for all our
designated platforms.

As for OTA-10+ landings, today we released a new location-service
(fusion engine provider for better position updates) and
ubuntu-system-settings with storage-information fixes.

Cheers!

it really isn't subjective for webrtc, and it isn't a huge distance away
from working now. getUserMedia needs to be able to select the right camera
based on the videosource id that it gives out through enumerateDevices, and
it needs to not be upside down. At that point, a basic hello world webrtc
video connection between two handsets can work.

'Usable' is a very subjective concept. Regardless, I expect modern web
applications would have an in-page control to switch cameras. But my
expectations might be wrong, in which case this is absolutely
something that we should reconsider.

As Alex pointed out in an earlier answer:

« we are also discussing how to integrate webapp specific settings
from the UI perspective to possibly tweak the default »

But this is not trivial from a UX perspective, given that most webapps
want the minimum amount of chrome (ideally none).

There are several known issues (most of them filed by you, keep them
coming!) that, when fixed, should greatly improve the default WebRTC
experience on ubuntu touch. I understand your frustration with the
current state of affairs (a half-working implementation that’s not
suited for lambda users), it is being addressed and is among our
priorities for OTA-11.

no, we are indeed working on improving the support in the container
for WebRTC related use cases, e.g.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/webbrowser-app/+bug/1563398

(to be noted that it will not solve all the use cases, but it will ease up
the process),

we are also discussing how to integrate webapp specific settings from the UI
perspective to possibly tweak th default, but the additional support
provided by

https://bugs.launchpad.net/oxide/+bug/1554603

will be enough to make switching from front & back cameras from the
application
itself work, since AFAIK appear.in handles the switch directly in-app w/o
external
settings support,

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] starting a background proc from a desktop icon

2016-04-07 Thread Matthias Apitz

I have found a trivial, combined solution: the *.desktop file is:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=unav-osm
Type=Application
Exec=/usr/bin/nohup /home/phablet/unav.sh
Icon=/userdata/system-data/opt/click.ubuntu.com/navigator.costales/0.57/icon.png
Terminal=false
X-Ubuntu-Touch=true

and the shell script launches both, first the HTTP server, and after
this the uNav app:

#!/bin/sh

# 1st start the local HTTP server:
cd /media/phablet/*/Maps
python3 -m http.server  &

# now start uNav
cd /userdata/system-data/opt/click.ubuntu.com/navigator.costales/0.57/
qmlscene %u qml/Main.qml

works fine;

2016-04-07 Thread Peter Bittner
What does that mean? There is no plan to offer (useable) WebRTC
implementation in webapp-container ever?

With your reference to the the web API you basically say the only way
is to implement things ourselves using JavaScript, correct? We cannot
easily integrate existing services that already have a substantial
user base, and a working, well-tested infrastructure?

This feels somewhat like "try to persuade Skype that they make their
web version work on Ubuntu Touch". Other companies may be smaller but
they will have the same reasons to shake their heads. There is no
incentive to invest manpower in tailoring solutions to Ubuntu Touch. I
think the Ubuntu Touch platform has to move.

And, sorry, what is wrong from a user (experience) perspective to
offer more control over which camera an app should use? This feature
shouldn't be hidden inside the browser's settings menu, buried three
levels deep where only freaky geeks will go to find it.

I'd really prefer this issue not being ignored that way.

Hi,

Which device do you see this with?

I should point out that the preview orientation will only work correctly
in the primary orientations (portrait or landscape) because of
https://launchpad.net/bugs/1535820 - ie, an inverted preview in
inverted-portrait or inverted-landscape is currently expected because of
a platform limitation.

Still, what you describe does not sound expected.

Thanks,

a mirror for you - easier on the brain) - the remote end sees it without
mirroring.

dunno about you, but I am fairly sure that being upside down is not
easier on my brain.

looks like it now enumerates the cameras, but only actually works with
the default camera set in the browser settings. The rear camera is OK,
front camera is upside down.

This is tracked by https://launchpad.net/bugs/1535818, which once
fixed in oxide will allow webapps to offer a piece of UI to switch
between front and back camera. There’s currently no plan to offer such
a feature in the webapp container itself, given the existence of the
web API.

This isn't a bug. The mirroring is done by appear.in with "transform:
rotateY(180deg)" on the video element style. This is common for video
conferencing sites which assume that the camera being used is a front
facing camera, where mirroring is desirable.

[Ubuntu-phone] Camera access and camera / video image in webbrowser

2016-04-07 Thread Peter Bittner
Hi all,

thanks for OTA-10, has (sort of) fixed some things for me. Most
importantly the camera access in the webapp-container, which is now
available.

Unfortunately, the changes has introduced at least one new bugs in
both the webbrowser-app and the webapp-container: (documented for the
appear.in app at [1])

- The video image is mirrored for some reason (at least on my bq E5).
This seems to be a general problem of the changes introduced to the
webbrowser-app.

[1] https://github.com/bittner/appear-in/issues/1#issuecomment-206779226

This also could mean that WebRTC is generally broken in the
webbrowser-app showing a mirrored camera image instead of a regular
one (as before OTA-10). Is this bug tracked already on LP?

Please note that camera selection in webapp-container is also still
missing in OTA-10, which is a critical feature WebRTC powered webapps.
I hope this really really comes to the platform with OTA-11. Sweet
video calling in an app may be something people on Ubuntu Touch may
have been waiting for (and who cares if it's not Skype when it works
better anyway).

Peter

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] [Design]: Color changes in OTA 10

2016-04-07 Thread Guillaume F

Hi,

Thank you for your answer, it's good to have that sort of explaination!

Like Wolf, I was disappointed to see the Ubuntu-orange replaced by the
every-other-OS-blue, though I understand the need to have one color per
function :). What do you mean by "focus state"? I've looked at the new
palette, but the orange color is the only one to be in the color set and
nowhere in the palette values.

And as a side-note, I think the Design team should communicate a bit
more. The design.canonical.com blog used to be full of life in
2013-2014, and since then there has been very few articles (most of them
are about Juju and the web, not Touch). That's too bad, because those
articles are very interesting, are a good way to keep the community up
to date and can explain some choices, as the design has seen tremendous
changes since 2013. For example, there was a great article about the
palette, but from a more technical point of view. The same kind of thing
from a design point of view (like you just did in your mail) would be great.

The same thing would apply to scopes. The M10 and MX5Pro press images
–and the ubuntu.com website– show mock-ups and scopes are quite
different from what we have now (especially the Today scope). I thought
this new look would make it into OTA-10, but no… This means both those
devices will ship with something that does not correspond to what the
buyers bought. And I'm not sure that's very good practice… Anyway, I
hope you'll write something about the new scopes when the time comes!

Please Design team, talk to us!

As for your concerns about components being blue rather than orange,
the reason why we have removed a lot of orange from the UI is that we
now want it to be a focus state and blue is meant to be the
selected/active state. Before we had orange doing both these functions
and each colour should have it's own meaning. And we feel the blue
works better for the selected/active state as it feels more intuitive
as a colour representing activity, while orange could sometimes be
confusing as what it's supposed to represent. So basically, we've
tried to make all our colours semantic. While orange is still our
brand colour, we want to use it in a more concise way, while other
colours take on more meaning in the UI, and hopefully, this will make
it a lot more intuitive for the user.

I know this seems ridiculous to complain about. But for me, color is a
significant indicator and as I have gotten used to the orange the blue

Other than that, I am pretty impressed (My Android phone broke on

Is there an official way to give feedback (there used to be a feeback

[Ubuntu-phone] starting a background proc from a desktop icon

2016-04-07 Thread Matthias Apitz

Hello,

I have a .desktop file as:

$ cat .local/share/applications/unav-osm.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Name=unav-osm
Type=Application
Exec=sh -c /home/phablet/unav.sh
Icon=/userdata/system-data/opt/click.ubuntu.com/navigator.costales/0.57/icon.png
Terminal=false
X-Ubuntu-Touch=true

This starts fine the shell script from the Exec line which in turn does:

$ cat /home/phablet/unav.sh
#!/bin/sh

cd /media/phablet/*/Maps
python3 -m http.server  &
sleep 86400 # 24h, i.e. for ever

The problem is:
- without the 'sleep 86400' the started proc python3 ... gets killed at the end
  of the script; as well 'nohup' does not help;
- with the 'sleep 86400', it works as expected but consumes a lot of CPU
  in the unity8 proc (perhaps because the rotating Ubuntu logo on the
  screen of the 'app');

Any ideas? Thanks

when I installed the firmware in one of my two MX4, I'm doing this from

So, you can find here:

You can find here a video that explain you howto use fastboot and adb:

For installing the Flyme firmware you can find here a guide:

I can see that on my Aquaris E4.5. On an MX4, the screen is wider, and
thus there are two columns.
This is indeed new, that view was tweaked between OTA9 and OTA10, and
that’s an unfortunate consequence of this change. Note that the grid
re-layouts itself to occupy the available width, so if you rotate your
phone, you will see three columns.
Given that every device has different screen resolution and density,
I’m not really sure whether this can be considered a bug (although I
admit it doesn’t look great on an Aquaris E4.5).

Can you elaborate a bit more on that one? Is it text input in the
browser, or everywhere? If the former, is it in the address bar, or in
text areas in web pages?

Thanks,

 Olivier

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Video scope & Youtube

2016-04-07 Thread Wayne Ward
I have alan popes youtube installed and that kicked in the youtube
videos from the movie scope, but i had one file that wouldnt preview so
i expect that could be a vimeo file, ill try installing the vimeo
player and see if that kicks in to today, but im sure they just used to
play without the players plugged in?

i think its early days with dekko and glad its built in, but i have to
remove it to install the one from openstore to get notifications
unconfined which is a pain, i think when you select in google options
dekko that dekko should be default when you click from a gmail in the
scope otherwise if unselected gmail opens...

Putting this idea more general: can I used such a *.desktop file to
launch a shell script in /home/phablet, for example one with the lines:

#!/bin/sh

cd /media/phablet/*/Maps
nohup python3 -m http.server  &

Thanks

[Ubuntu-phone] Video scope & Youtube

2016-04-07 Thread André Fettouhi
I have a Meizu MX4 running Ubuntu Touch with update OTA-10 now and since
OTA-9.1 the Video scope has been partly broken. It shows you the popular
videos from Youtube and Vimeo but if you select a youtube video you just
get a blank page. This before you it usually opens the browser. Vimeo on
the other hand works fine. If you select a Vimeo video you a the
description etc. and then you select it and the browser opens. Not anymore
with the Youtube videos.

What it is also rather irritation currently with Ubuntu Touch is the flaky
video playback mostly again from Youtube sometimes when try to playback a
video you may not get any picture just sound and sometimes it is reverse. I
don't know if this caused by the Ubuntu Touch backend or by the app I might
be using like the uReadIt app.

Finally I find a bit strange that Ubuntu now includes Dekko as the mail
client which is great but the gmail scope still only offers to open an
e-mail in gmail web app.

Kind Regards
