This is sometimes happening to me on my krillin running rc-proposed,
with libmircommon6 version 0.24.1+15.04.20160928-0ubuntu1.

I have no idea what triggers it. When it happens, it tends to become
100% reproducible, until I reboot my device or unity8 crashes and is
restarted (which happens very rarely I must say, but it did happen a
couple of days ago and the keyboard issue was gone).

I will collect all the information you requested next time it happens.

I’m also affected. It’s not just the numpad, it’s also the
alphabetical keyboard in all applications. I’ve gotten really good at
hitting the right keys without seeing them… Is that a known bug?

Technically, this is not a reboot, it’s unity8 that crashed.

Individual webapps have a mechanism to override the user agent string,
so a quick and easy "fix" is to create a webapp with a suitable user
agent override for your favourite website.
Otherwise a bug report at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/webbrowser-app/+filebug is
welcome, we can add overrides to the browser too.

This bug will be fixed with the upcoming OTA-15.

Yes, this is most likely yet another instance of a website serving bad
content based on user-agent string. To work around the issue, I would
suggest you create a webapp for telesurtv.net, where you can specify a
UA override (see
https://developer.ubuntu.com/en/phone/web/ubuntu-webapps-guide/ for
details). This won’t make it work in the browser itself, but at least
it should allow you to watch the stream in an easy way.

Hi Marcin,

This is https://launchpad.net/bugs/1656551. A fix is ready (oxide
1.19.7, already available in the rc-proposed images), an OTA-15 is
currently being prepared to release that fix.

Sorry for the inconvenience… Your best bet for now would be to switch
to the rc-proposed channel, or to only upgrade oxide-qt from the
stable-phone-overlay PPA, if you don’t mind making your device
writable. Neither of those is an ideal solution, but that would
unblock you.

appear.in is using the user-agent string¹ to present different content
based on what it guesses the OS is. In that case it incorrectly thinks
it’s android (because the UA string exposed by webbrowser-app contains
a "like Android" token). It therefore presents an android-specific
link which will open the appear.in android app if installed, or most
likely redirect to the play store to suggest installing it if not.
There is a mechanism for webapps to override the default user agent,
so I was suggesting that the author of the appear.in webapp (Peter
Bittner, CC'ed here) should use it to "fix" the webapp.
Happy to help testing or do further investigation if needed.

Cheers,

 Olivier

Ah, I didn’t know there was a webapp for it.
So I just checked (created myself a test account), and I’m not sure
what’s going on. When tapping a file to download it, a POST request is
sent, but the webview never gets the download request. Here is what I
get with the inspector for the POST request (for a file named
"pdf.pdf"):

Would you mind filing a bug at

It might be a UA string issue, or not. Could you attach the log file
found at /home/phablet/.cache/upstart/application-legacy-webbrowser-app-.log

Yes. That would require an architectural change in oxide, UDM and the
way they interact. Not saying it can’t be done, but it’s non trivial
and not currently on the priority list.

It seems it’s a similar issue to https://launchpad.net/bugs/1548020.
When clicking the download button in the nextcloud UI, a request for
the file with a secret parameter is issued to the web server, and gets
a 200 response (OK). Oxide then cancels that request and passes the
parameters to the Ubuntu Download Manager, which re-issues the same
request to initiate the actual download. The second request is denied
(I’ve seen 401s and 503s), most probably because the secret is a
one-time token that has already been used:

::1 - - [15/Nov/2016:15:26:20 +0100] "GET
/nextcloud/remote.php/webdav/movie.mp4?downloadStartSecret=pjpu0984pl3odl9sbz0itqpvi

AppleWebKit/537.36 Chromium/54.0.2840.71 Safari/537.36"
127.0.0.1 - - [15/Nov/2016:15:26:27 +0100] "GET
/nextcloud/remote.php/webdav/movie.mp4?downloadStartSecret=pjpu0984pl3odl9sbz0itqpvi
HTTP/1.1" 401 1194 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Ubuntu 16.04)
AppleWebKit/537.36 Chromium/54.0.2840.71 Safari/537.36"

I will update the bug report to include the nextcloud use case, and
will bump its importance, although as things stand we don’t have a
clear solution to it.

Cheers,

 Olivier

I’m afraid I don’t know of a way to programatically change the audio
output device. There’s certainly nothing webview-specific there.

Awesome!
Does that mean there’s no arbitrary limit on the number of concurrent
silos any longer?
What’s the naming scheme for those ephemeral PPAs?

You can add custom search engine definitions in the form of OpenSearch
XML files (http://www.opensearch.org/Specifications/OpenSearch/1.1).
Just drop those custom definitions in
~/.local/share/webbrowser-app/searchengines/, you should then be able
to use your favourite search engine from within the browser.

[Ubuntu-phone] What’s new in webbrowser-app in OTA-12 ?

2016-07-11 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Hi all,

With the release of OTA-12 just around the corner, here is a list of
the most significant changes in the browser app since OTA-11:

 - Consistent page headers across the UI, making use of UITK Page and PageHeader
 - Display the currently hovered hyperlink’s target URL in an overlay
 - Only load the current tab when the session is restored
 - Touch selection improvements
 - Dynamic chromium version number in default user-agent string
 - New keyboard shortcuts for persistent per-domain zoom factor
 - Optimized new tab view loading time
 - Updated user-agent overrides for youtube and gmail
 - Set the front camera as the default for video media requests

And a number of bug fixes.
Anyone interested in details, have a look at the bzr history for
lp:webbrowser-app, revisions 1454 to 1493.

Happy web browsing!

I don’t think swearing is actually implemented, but it would make for an
interesting easter egg :)
On a more serious note, I think both tapping and swiping work, although I
find tapping to be much more reliable.

It is indeed. Browsing a website that was designed only for desktop
use (assuming mouse and physical keyboard, a wide external monitor,
and no touchscreen) can also result in a fairly bad user experience.
How bad in comparison to the lack of a feature is subjective of
course, so this needs to be tested. Either way there doesn’t seem to
be an easy solution to the removal of the messenger feature from the
mobile website.

It’s https://launchpad.net/bugs/1582060, which will be fixed in OTA12.

Sounds like https://launchpad.net/bugs/1563398, fix targetted for OTA-12.
In the meantime, you can use the browser and change the default camera

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuririn, the correct
spelling is with double "l". The device label in system settings is
misspelled.

No, the info is correct: the *ubuntu* version number is now dynamic
(was previously hardcoded to 14.04). The chromium version is still
hardcoded until the bug I referred to is fixed (should be landing
soon).

The physical size of the display is already taken into account for the
user agent string. Typically on a M10, the browser should be using a
desktop user agent. If it doesn’t then it’s a bug, feel free to report
it at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/webbrowser-app/+filebug
(please include the log file from the app that you’ll find at
/home/phablet/.cache/upstart/application-legacy-webbrowser-app-.log).

You can check the default UA string on your device by browsing to e.g.
http://www.whatsmyua.com/.

Hello Hans,

There is currently no way of doing that through the UI. We have a user
agent override mechanism, but the list of overrides is currently
hardcoded in a system-wide file, so unless you make your phone system
writeable (not recommended), this list cannot be changed (if you are
willing to try at your own risk, I can send further instructions).

Sites that selectively enable features based on user-agent sniffing
are fairly broken, this is a thing from the past really. Unfortunately
this is still very much commonplace.
Can you report a bug to slack.com, requesting them to recognize the
default ubuntu touch UA string?

It looks like this:

 Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Ubuntu 15.04 like Android 4.4) AppleWebKit/537.36
Chromium/[chromiumVersion] Mobile Safari/537.36

(where chromiumVersion is currently hardcoded at 35.0.1870.2, but a
change will soon land that will make it dynamic, reflecting the
current version of chromium the web engine is based upon, which at the
time of writing is 50.0.2661.94)

Our browser is based on chromium, pretty much anything that works on
e.g. chrome on android should work exactly the same.

Thanks for the feedback!

[Ubuntu-phone] What’s new in webbrowser-app in OTA-11 ?

2016-05-30 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Hi all,

With the release of OTA-11 just around the corner, here is a list of
the most significant changes in the browser app since OTA-10:

 - Use of the UITK’s SwipeArea component for the bottom edge gesture
recognition (fixes a long standing issue with activating elements at
the bottom of a page)
 - Added UA overrides to make google hangouts work on all form factors
 - Dynamic Ubuntu version number in default user-agent string
 - Fine-tuned the memory-pressure handler that unloads background tabs
 - Proper handling of window-level keyboard shortcuts
 - Redesigned media permission request dialog
 - List items that open new pages in settings are visually identified
as such with a progression symbol

And a number of bug fixes.
Anyone interested in details, have a look at the bzr history for
lp:webbrowser-app, revisions 1391 to 1453.

Happy web browsing!

Thanks Michał!
Not sure whether that’s by design, but being allowed to swipe the SIM
dialog away doesn’t sound that bad to me, it still allows the user to
use their device without connectivity (although it’s not very
discoverable, I found out by accident after more than a year of using
this as my only phone, applying system updates, hence rebooting,
almost on a daily basis).

I can reliably reproduce the issue by simply rebooting the phone and
dismissing the SIM pin unlock. When I tap the "Unlock" button in
system settings, nothing shows up in the app’s logs.

[Ubuntu-phone] unable to unlock SIM card - known issue?

2016-05-20 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Hi folks,

Today I applied the latest system update on my krillin running on
rc-proposed. This triggered a reboot, and then I got the screen
prompting my SIM pin number. So far so good.

Then by accident instead of entering the pin I swiped leftwards and
the pin screen was dismissed, replaced by the lock screen. I entered
my 4-digit passcode to unlock the device, opened the indicators to
verify that the SIM card was still locked, and tapped the button to
unlock it. Nothing happened. Tried again several times, nothing. Went
to system settings, tapped the button to unlock the SIM card, nothing
either.

Unfortunately I was in a hurry, not near a computer and badly needed
to make a phone call, so I couldn’t debug the issue further, and opted
for simply rebooting the device.

Is that a known issue? If not I’ll see if I can reliably reproduce,
and will file a bug.

Cheers,

 Olivier

Yes, that’s what I did (wasn’t at the top of the QA queue). While I
was at it I added a few branches to the silo, so at least the
validation step I’ll re-do is justified.

There’s another regression in rc-proposed that affects the browser
app: https://launchpad.net/bugs/1545802. That bug already existed, but
the latest UITK landing made it worse, tapping on the browser address
bar to focus it doesn’t actually give it active focus now.
This needs to be fixed for OTA-11.

Thanks Roberto, that did the trick! I can now select in which folder
on my IMAP account I want sent messages to be saved to.

However sent messages are not actually saved. It doesn’t look like
dekko is even trying to copy them. It sends them fine, but that’s all.

This is what my mailbox behaviour config file looks like:

phablet@ubuntu-phablet:~$ cat ~/.config/dekko.dekkoproject/mailboxConfig.json
{
"EDITED_ACCOUNT_ID": {
"global": {
"archive": {
"enabled": false,
"folder": "",
"format": "monthly",
"keepMboxStructure": false
},
"deleted": {
"autoExpunge": false,
"markRead": true,
"moveToTrash": false,
"preserveFlagged": false
},
"drafts": {
"saveDraftInterval": 1000,
"saveLocal": true,
"saveToDrafts": false
},
"draftsMailbox": "",
"sentMailbox": "Sent",
"submission": {
"allowRetries": false,
"bcc": "",
"cc": "",
"includeBCC": false,
"includeCC": false,
"includeSignature": "never",
"quoteOriginalMessage": true,
"replyQuotePosition": "after",
"saveToImap": true
},
"trashMailbox": ""
}
}
}

What might I be missing to have my sent messages saved to the Sent folder?

Thanks,

 Olivier

[Ubuntu-phone] dekko - account configuration

2016-05-04 Thread Olivier Tilloy
I’ve recently had to re-create my account configuration for dekko
(because of https://launchpad.net/bugs/1570774) and I didn’t find how
to specify both IMAP and SMTP configuration in the same place. I’ve
had to configure two accounts, an IMAP one, and an SMTP one. I’m
pretty sure that in the past there was a way to configure both things
in just one go, and there was only one account listed in the
configuration screen, not two.

Also (this may be related), in the configuration screen for the SMPT
account, when I tick the checkbox to save sent messages, selecting a
folder shows an empty screen, so I cannot actually have my sent
messages be saved to the Sent folder on my IMAP account.

Are these known issues?

Thanks,

 Olivier

This is getting weirder by the minute: with my existing e-mail
configuration, I didn’t get any bottom edge hint or way of composing a
new e-mail.
After deleting my configuration (moved ~/.config/dekko.dekkoproject
out of the way) and re-creating it manually in the app, I am now able
to open my messages again, and I am seeing the bottom edge hint to
compose a new message again.

This is happening to me again, after uninstalling and re-installing
dekko from the store on my up-to-date E4.5 running rc-proposed.

Have you filed a bug?
I’m not able to reproduce the issue any longer, after updating my M10
to the latest rc-proposed image. I’m wondering whether it’s a
transient issue that maybe happens only just after updating an app
that acts as a content provider?

That should work in the stock web browser (if it doesn’t it’s a bug,
please file one). I assume you’re seeing this in firefox, right? I
don’t know whether that would work for legacy apps running in a
container under XMir, but I think firefox needs to learn about the
powerd D-Bus API to inhibit screen blanking.

The obvious workaround is to hold the device in portrait/landscape

You can look for existing bugs, and report a new one, here:

On which device are you seeing this btw? I’ve tested the E4.5 and the

Thanks Víctor,
At this stage, no need for logs as we can reliably reproduce the issue
here, we simply need to dig into the web engine to find where the bug is
and fix it. We will update the bug report as we progress on it.

Thanks for reporting that bug Alexey, I filed
https://launchpad.net/bugs/1574656 to track it. Note that there is a
workaround: when composing a new e-mail, focus another field first
(e.g. "Subject"), then focus "Recipients", and the OSK will remain
visible.

I’m not sure exactly what the issue is yet, but I’ll look into it.

Cheers,

Thanks for the advice Matthias.
I moved the dekko folders under ~/.cache and ~/.local/share, and also
removed the QML cache for the app under ~/.cache/QML/Apps, but this
didn’t make a difference. I’ve seen numerous crashes at startup or
when opening my inbox while testing this, by the way (this in on the
latest rc-proposed image).

I then moved the configuration under ~/.config, which prompted me to
re-create my IMAP and SMTP configuration the next time I launched the
app. After doing that, I can now open messages in my inbox.

So it looks like somehow my account configuration was faulty.

I kept a copy of the old configuration, and comparing the files
side-by-side, I’m seeing some notable differences:

 * dekko.dekkoproject.conf: I used to have only one account of type
IMAP_SMTP, now I have two accounts, one of type IMAP and the other one
of type SMTP

 * mailboxConfig.json had references to two (?) accounts, the file is now empty

 * notifications.json had some configuration in it, it’s now empty

I’m keeping that old configuration around, if anyone familiar with
dekko’s configuration structure wants to help, I can provide it with
sensitive information obfuscated.

In any case, dekko is working for me again, thanks Dan and team for
this fantastic app!

Cheers,

 Olivier

webbrowser-app is already registered as a content source, if that’s
what you mean. So you can for example download a file to ~/Downloads,
and later request opening that file from another app (e.g. telegram to
attach it to a message).

I briefly looked into that as the browser is also affected (the
actions for the touch selection are not translated), and commented on
https://launchpad.net/bugs/1567377. It looks like the UITK is not
installing its translations (mo files) any longer, I couldn’t find
them on my device. This is probably a recent regression, and IMHO
definitely worth a hotfix.

'Usable' is a very subjective concept. Regardless, I expect modern web
applications would have an in-page control to switch cameras. But my
expectations might be wrong, in which case this is absolutely
something that we should reconsider.

As Alex pointed out in an earlier answer:

« we are also discussing how to integrate webapp specific settings
from the UI perspective to possibly tweak the default »

But this is not trivial from a UX perspective, given that most webapps
want the minimum amount of chrome (ideally none).

There are several known issues (most of them filed by you, keep them
coming!) that, when fixed, should greatly improve the default WebRTC
experience on ubuntu touch. I understand your frustration with the
current state of affairs (a half-working implementation that’s not
suited for lambda users), it is being addressed and is among our
priorities for OTA-11.

This is tracked by https://launchpad.net/bugs/1535818, which once
fixed in oxide will allow webapps to offer a piece of UI to switch
between front and back camera. There’s currently no plan to offer such
a feature in the webapp container itself, given the existence of the
web API.

I can see that on my Aquaris E4.5. On an MX4, the screen is wider, and
thus there are two columns.
This is indeed new, that view was tweaked between OTA9 and OTA10, and
that’s an unfortunate consequence of this change. Note that the grid
re-layouts itself to occupy the available width, so if you rotate your
phone, you will see three columns.
Given that every device has different screen resolution and density,
I’m not really sure whether this can be considered a bug (although I
admit it doesn’t look great on an Aquaris E4.5).

Can you elaborate a bit more on that one? Is it text input in the
browser, or everywhere? If the former, is it in the address bar, or in
text areas in web pages?

Thanks,

 Olivier

That would require some manual configuration (as you would need to
install tor on the device and have it running as a service).
Even then, there’s a bug in the web engine that prevents it from
working: https://launchpad.net/bugs/1525883.

As mentioned earlier, all the improvements I listed above are mostly
browser-specific, so I’m not sure I understand the question.

If you’re having specific issues with existing webapps (or the lack
thereof), have you checked whether there are bug reports to track
them? If you’re unsure, this mailing list is a good place to ask, make
sure to be specific about the issues you’re seeing (please start a new

webapp-container and webbrowser-app are the same codebase, however the
enhancements I listed in my original e-mails are only for the browser
app (except the touch selection controller that affects both), I’ll
let David or Alex comment on the new stuff on the webapps front.
That said, that specific bug is fixed in OTA-10 indeed, as can be seen

Not necessarily, if the data in the cache is still valid. Note that
the full state of the page is preserved. Also note that in OTA9 and
previous versions, the app would always unload all tabs but the most
two recent ones, so that’s actually an improvement over the current
situation.

[Ubuntu-phone] What’s new in webbrowser-app in OTA-10 ?

2016-04-04 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Hi all,

With the release of OTA-10 just around the corner, I figured I’d take
a few minutes to publish a list of the most significant changes in the
browser app since OTA-9 (Łukasz feel free to re-use for the release
notes):

[Touch]
 - Touch selection controller to allow selecting/copying/pasting of web content.

[Convergence]
 - The browser is now a single-instance app on desktop: invoking it in
a terminal with a URL will raise the existing window and open a new
tab instead of launching another instance of the app.
 - When a mouse is connected, turn the bottom edge hint into a
clickable bottom edge bar.
 - Added keyboard navigation support to all views in phone layout.

[Misc]
 - Added video-specific actions to the contextual menu (save video,
and open video in new tab).
 - Removed the "Allow opening new tabs in background" setting.
 - React to low memory situations by unloading background tabs to
(hopefully) free up some memory. This removes the hardcoded upper
limit of 2 live webviews at any given time on devices.

And a heap of bug fixes.
Anyone interested in details, have a look at the bzr history for
lp:webbrowser-app, revisions 1328 to 1390.

Happy web browsing!

 Olivier

Where do you click "share"? I just tested from the browser’s drawer

and in both cases I’m getting a number of options for apps to receive
the URL I’m sharing.

Thanks for that useful tip!

I can confirm that browsing local HTML files won’t work in the browser.
This is an unfortunate side-effect of confining the browser with
apparmor to prevent disclosing sensitive information (previously the
browser ran unconfined and one could view the contents of all files on
the filesystem).

I’d like to find a middle-ground solution to that problem, so that
users could browse and view "legitimate" files in their home folder,
without compromising security. I’ve filed
https://launchpad.net/bugs/1563214 to track the issue. Suggestions and
ideas welcome.

Cheers,

 Olivier

Indeed not, Ubuntu Touch’s security model means that an app cannot
access other apps’ data (including cache).

You might want to look into the OpenStore though, it allows publishing
apps with special permissions, for advanced users (see
http://notyetthere.org/openstore-tweakgeek-and-more/).

Alternatively, it might be a good idea to expose a way to do that from
the system settings app (under About>Storage I guess), I don’t know if
such a feature is planned or in the works, but if it is I’m sure your
help would be very appreciated. Take a look at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-system-settings if you’re interested in
contributing to the system settings app.

Cheers,

 Olivier

If you want to keep your web browsing history, bookmarks, downloads
history and cookies, you’ll want to back up
/home/phablet/.local/share/webbrowser-app

Less than a week’s notice seems a bit short. Can we give app devs a
longer grace period?

Confusing webbrowser-app for firefox would be flattering :)

@Louis, can you confirm that this is with the stock browser application?
If so, is this happening when connected over 3G, or wifi, or both?

And I forgot that top sorts by CPU usage by default. Could you do that
again with the following command:

top -o +%MEM

I’d be especially interested in the output while browsing to one of
the websites that cause the crashes.

Thanks!

They probably do, although how much I don’t know. Maybe someone more
familiar with the scopes architecture can comment (and maybe there’s a
known issue with memory consumption there?).

@Wayne: could you run the 'top' command in the terminal app, and let
us know what are the processes that consume the most memory (the first
few lines of the output)?

Thanks,

That’s a known shortcoming of the browser touch selection
implementation. See https://launchpad.net/bugs/1556764.

On what device is that?
When you say that the browser keeps crashing, does it actually crash
(i.e. the app freezes and then suddenly closes), or does it close
existing tabs and display a message saying that it was low on memory?
The former is unexpected (of course), the latter is the correct
behaviour when under memory pressure.
