[Bug 1319267] [NEW] ubuntu template: don't set $http_proxy from $HTTP_PROXY

2014-05-14 Thread Martin Pitt
Public bug reported:

I'm using apt-cacher-ng on my workstation, so my local apt specifies
Acquire::http { Proxy http://127.0.0.1:3142;; };

That won't work in a container, because there the IP is 10.0.3.1.

But with lxc-ubuntu's choose_container_proxy() there is no way to get it
right:

 - If I specify HTTP_PROXY=http://10.0.3.1:3142 then the container's apt
config is correct, but bootstrapping fails because it also sets export
http_proxy=$HTTP_PROXY

 - If I specify HTTP_PROXY=http://127.0.0.1:3142, then bootstrapping
works, but the container's apt config is broken

Please do either of:

 - Don't set http_proxy to $HTTP_PROXY
 - Allow specifying/overriding $http_proxy and $APT_PROXY separately

Thanks!

** Affects: lxc (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Invalid

[Bug 1319267] Re: ubuntu template: don't set $http_proxy from $HTTP_PROXY

2014-05-14 Thread Martin Pitt
Hmm, and just after filing this bug and after I removed caches, old
containers, etc. and run this again with HTTP_PROXY=http://10.0.3.1:3142
it works again (as it used to for a long time, until yesterday and this
morning). So apparently something weird on my side, sorry for the noise!

[Bug 1303926] Re: qemu-system-x86_64 crashed with SIGABRT

2014-05-14 Thread f3a97
Hi Serge,

I keep getting the crash notification due to kvm crashes with the same
bug title as this one. I see that the status is Fix Released, I'm on
precise and fully up-to-date.

My package is:

ii qemu-kvm 1.0+noroms-0ubuntu14.14
Full virtualization on i386 and amd64 hardware

which seems the correct one.

However, from the changelog I cannot see anything that seems related to this
bug fix:

qemu-kvm (1.0+noroms-0ubuntu14.14) precise-security; urgency=medium

  * SECURITY UPDATE: arbitrary code execution via MAC address table update
- debian/patches/CVE-2014-0150.patch: fix overflow in hw/virtio-net.c.
- CVE-2014-0150
  * SECURITY UPDATE: denial of service and possible code execution via
smart self test counter
- debian/patches/CVE-2014-2894.patch: correct self-test count in
  hw/ide/core.c.
- CVE-2014-2894

 -- Marc Deslauriers marc.deslauri...@ubuntu.com Fri, 25 Apr 2014

qemu-kvm (1.0+noroms-0ubuntu14.13) precise-security; urgency=medium

  * SECURITY UPDATE: privilege escalation via REPORT LUNS
- debian/patches/CVE-2013-4344.patch: support more than 256 LUNS in
  hw/scsi-bus.c, hw/scsi.h.
- CVE-2013-4344

 -- Marc Deslauriers marc.deslauri...@ubuntu.com Tue, 28 Jan 2014
09:08:09 -0500

(the other entries are older than these ones)

Has this fix really been released to precise?

Thank you!

But this information I think is useless since the method which actually reveled
this issue is part of my own built private version of libibverbs.
however I'm intend to write you a small app to demonstrate this faulty behavior
- it actually should should be almost the same as the code snippet + some setup

What seems to work, at least for now is just calling modprobe to load

[Bug 1275656] Re: open-vm-dkms 2011.12.20-562307-0ubuntu1: open-vm-tools kernel module failed to build

2014-05-14 Thread Robert C Jennings
In response to comment #9 from Michael Schaller:
Robert, what are HWE kernels on Precise?
Which of these metapackages will install a HWE kernel?
 linux-image-generic-lts-quantal
 linux-image-generic-lts-raring
 linux-image-generic-lts-saucy
 linux-image-generic-lts-trusty

All of those install an HWE kernel, you want Saucy or later. A kernel
which is v3.9 or later is required for functionality in these patches
and I will clarify in the package description with an update to the
patch attached here. I suggest Saucy as of today because it is the
supported LTS kernel in Precise as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack#Kernel.2BAC8-Support.Ubuntu_Kernel_Support.
The Trusty LTS kernel for Precise is in early preview as of today and
will not be supported until 12.04.5 according to that web page.

To make things easier, there is a single meta package you can use to
point to the latest HWE kernel, linux[-image]-hwe-generic. Sadly, that
package is still pointing to Quantal but I have opened bug #1319471 to
correctly point the linux[-image]-hwe-generic packages to linux[-image
]-generic-lts-saucy. Hopefully that can be resolved by the time this
package becomes available and we'll have simpler guidance on which
kernel to use.

Robert, if you introduce a new package to Precise can you also make sure that
there is a transitional package in Trusty?
This would greatly help during a dist-upgrade from Precise to Trusty...

The second patch does just that, it updates the trusty open-vm-tools
packages to provide transitional packages and make for a smooth Precise
to Trusty upgrade.

cat /proc/self/cgroup | grep systemd

Attaching a diagram to outline the changes here and the upgrade path to

is bridging the two.

[Bug 1319595] [NEW] upstart script ignores some php-fpm.conf parameters, cannot be bypassed in preference of SystemV init script.

2014-05-14 Thread Jim Howell
Public bug reported:

Trusty 14.04 LTS x86_64 Server

The upstart script invokes php5-fpm with --nodaemonize.

This causes several options from the config file to be ignored,
including log file locations, pid file, and others. It also means that
logging is done to /var/log/upstart/ and is no longer configurable.

Despite the advantages Upstart brings, these problems may cause some
(like me) to choose to abandon Upstart for this particular package.
Unfortunately, deleting the Upstart script does not have the intended
effect of falling back to the /etc/init.d version by the same name.

Due to the following snippet from /etc/init.d/php5-fpm,

# Don't run if we are running upstart
if init_is_upstart; then
exit 1
fi

it is impossible to successfully run the init script. The init script is
permanently and fundamentally DISABLED by this snippet.

A notice or warning output would be more appropriate; or perhaps some
additional value set from /etc/default/php5-fpm that would override this
behavior. As things stand, I cannot use the init script without making
an incompatible edit, which I would then have to fight to maintain
against updates for the next few years.

Backwards-compatibility, please. This is the server version, after all!

[Bug 1310792] Re: dfree command is not working anymore in samba

2014-05-14 Thread Peter de Kraker
My workaround for now is to allow zfs module access to all users from the zfs
group, instead of only root.
This way the zfs command can be run by by users from that group.

/etc/udev/rules.d/91-zfs-permissions.rules
#Use this to add a group and more permissive permissions for zfs
#so that you don't always need run it as root. beware, users not root
#can do nearly EVERYTHING, including, but not limited to destroying
#volumes and deleting datasets. they CANNOT mount datasets or create new
#volumes, export datasets via NFS, or other things that require root
#permissions outside of ZFS.
ACTION==add, KERNEL==zfs, MODE=0660, GROUP=zfs

Note that you need to add the zfs group and add the users to it. This is
also a bit risky, because every user of that group can now modify zfs
stuff. (But on your own homeserver this is not really a problem)

[Bug 1319600] [NEW] maas command line client brittle to unexpected inputs

2014-05-14 Thread Seth Arnold
Public bug reported:

The maas command line client is brittle to unexpected inputs. On trusty,
I tried to run the 'sudo maas createsuperuser' command that I used on
precise, quantal, and saucy, but it failed. I wanted detailed help, so I
ran 'maas -h', and that dumped a stack trace because the file
/home/ubuntu/.maascli.db was owned by root. I tried running a bare
'maas' to get help, and that gave an error message with instruction to
run a command that isn't actually executable.

I expected the 'createsuperuser' command to be useful -- hints about its
replacement would be welcome.

I expected a simple error message if a database file isn't readable
rather than a stack trace.

I expected some simple help regardless of database ownership.

I expected the advice about getting help to be usable with copy-and-
paste.

Thanks

[Bug 1317601] Re: [SRU] SRU New upstream bugfix release of MAAS

2014-05-14 Thread Jason Hobbs
I tested 1.5.1+bzr2269-0ubuntu0.1 (from trusty-proposed) by doing a
clean install, and enlisting/commissioning/stopping a node. I also
tested the upgrade path by installing the current trusty release
(1.5+bzr2252-0ubuntu1), enlisting/commissioning/starting a node, and
then upgrading to 1.5.1+bzr2269-0ubuntu0.1, and stopping/restarting that
node, and enlisting/commissioning/starting a new node.

Charles and I came up with involves modifying abstractions/lxc
/container-base.

Re: [Bug 1319600] [NEW] maas command line client brittle to unexpected inputs

2014-05-14 Thread Julian Edwards
On 15/05/14 09:22, Seth Arnold wrote:

On this page
http://maas.ubuntu.com/docs1.5/install.html
It says to run sudo maas-region-admin createadmin ...

Is there any reason you missed that that we can help to fix?

(In the last release, the maas command was renamed to maas-region-admin,
and maas-cli to maas, which has caused some confusion)

I expected a simple error message if a database file isn't readable
 rather than a stack trace.

I expected some simple help regardless of database ownership.

This should have happened without the stacktrace, and is the real bug
here. I will amend the title accordingly.

I expected the advice about getting help to be usable with copy-and-
 paste.

Please file a separate bug for that.

(Also please file bugs on the upstream maas project)

[Bug 1319600] Re: maas-cli stack trace if .maascli.db unreadable

2014-05-14 Thread Seth Arnold
Is there any reason you missed that that we can help to fix?

Only that in the middle of testing an update I followed the same
directions for precise, quantal, saucy, and noticed no problems until
trusty. Fair's fair, things change, but it would have been nice to have
a hint in the right direction without resorting to the web.

Thanks
