Ended up having to use Synaptic. Just cleaned out all the supporting files as much as possible. Hi Mark, thanks for taking the time to file a bug report. Setting up mysql-server-5.1 (5.1.54-1ubuntu4) ... invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/mysql not found. If you forcibly removed /etc/init.d/mysql , dpkg will respect that and leave it gone, as it is considered a configuration file.
