Is that still an issue with the current setup? We did changes that

We configured the ubuntu-desktop-translations project to use reviewers,
but it seems Weblate doesn't give us the option to mandate new
translations to be reviewed (unless we mis-configured it, if that's the
case and there is a better way please let us know)?
The configuration should enforce though that changes to existing strings
need to go through a moderator (unless we got that also wrong/don't
understand Weblate enough) and such at least resolve the 'random people

About reviewers, if you are part of a launchpad translations team and

Translating the Ubuntu flutter applications (including the installer)

2024-03-27 Thread Sebastien Bacher

Dear Translators,

Some cycles ago I emailed[1] the translators list to let them know that
the new installer (which is written in flutter) could be translated in
weblate

The initial reason still stands today

For those wondering the choice of platform, the frontend is written in
flutter and there is no integration in launchpad for that translation
format so we checked around and weblate sounded like the right choice.

Going forward we had an issue in 23.10 due to the open permissions used
for the project

https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/announcement-ubuntu-desktop-23-10-release-image-translation-incident-now-resolved

We have now updated our configuration to restrict the strings validation
to trusted members. We currently don't have a way to automatically map
our existing launchpad translation teams to Weblate but if you part of a
~ubuntu-l10n- group on launchpad and would like to help by
validating translations also on Weblate we will happily add you as a
reviewer for your language. Please reply to this email (either in
private to me or on the list) with the email you use for weblate and we
will get you added.

The translation project got renamed as part of the changes and includes
the installer/provisioning components as well as the app-center and
firmware-updater

https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/ubuntu-desktop-translations/

Thanks,
Sebastien Bacher

New snapd-desktop-integration project to translate

2023-04-06 Thread Sebastien Bacher

Hey translators,

snapd-desktop-integration is used for some interactions between snapd
and the user session. It's going to display notifications for things
like theme installation or 'update available, close your software to
have it refreshed to the current version'.

Those strings are user visible and should be translated, that can now be
done on

New software-properties and gnome-initial-setup strings need translation

2023-01-23 Thread Sebastien Bacher

Hey there,

We are replacing the software-properties-gtk 'Livepatch' tab by an
reworked 'Ubuntu Pro' UI which is providing Livepatch but also more
services. The change is in Lunar (though not visible since the service
is only available on LTS series) and also being SRU in J/F/B (currently
in proposed)

You can find the strings to translate on
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lunar/+source/software-properties/+translations

(the translations are shared between series so focusing on Lunar should
be enough)

We are also changing the Livepatch step of the Ubuntu Desktop first
login wizard by an Ubuntu Pro one. The change is specific to 22.04 and
the strings can be translated there

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jammy/+source/gnome-initial-setup/+translations

Translations updates done in the next weeks will be included as part of
the language packs refresh in LTS .2

Thanks,

I've fixed the issue now, rev585 in edge should be properly translated,
see https://bugs.launchpad.net/snap-store-desktop/+bug/1969230

It would be nice to have a checklist indeed, the template currently
needs a manual update, which should be done when we rebase on a new
serie. The snap also include exported translations from launchpad so we
should regularly include a refresh of translations

Since the template has only be updated now there might be new string
that need translation on
https://translations.launchpad.net/snap-store-desktop/trunk/+translations
, ideally we should work on making that template exclude the upstream
strings since we do a msgmerge with the gnome-software translations and
the snap-store .po aren't updated on launchpad...

Xdg portal translations

2022-01-13 Thread Sebastien Bacher

Hey there,

I investigated a bit why the 'save' button in the corresponding dialog
wasn't showing translated when using the firefox or chromium snaps and
it seems like xdg-desktop-portal-gtk translations need some work. It's
not really surprising since it's hosted on github and there seems to be
no defined workflow to translate it... in any case it's user visible so
if some translators would help

Upstream is https://github.com/flatpak/xdg-desktop-portal-gtk/ , it
seems there is no integration so you would need to manually edit the .po
and submit a PR with the changes

otherwise it's possible to translate on launchpad for Ubuntu which is
easier (we can forward the .po updates upstream later)

Snaps unlike debs are not 'per distribution', the snap-storer users of a
determined channel will get the new versions including translations
updates whenever a new revision is pushed, them being on 20.04, 20.10,
Debian, Fedora or OpenSuse doesn't make a difference.

Which means the translations fixes you did, once included in a new
revision of the snap will benefit users of 20.04 as well yes.

Unsure what you mean? Launchpad is the right place to translate
snap-store, it's just that the translations don't get provided through
langpack deb updates (that wouldn't reach users on user distributions)
but included in the snap itself.
What would you like to see a warning about?

Hey Gunnar,

That will teach me to just read the title and assume it was the same
email as usual, sorry for not reading the content!

I think the approach of copying by default the updated translations
makes sense, especially that in recent times we didn't get much feedback
and we ended up not shipping langpack refresh for most locales.

Thanks to you and Lukasz for the change!

Launchpad lists known translations for strings which are identic in
different projects but those are only suggestions and need to be
reviewed and approved still. I don't think there is a direct import of

New gnome-control-center strings

2020-07-09 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Hey there,

We worked on a redesign for the fingerprint authentification settings
which landed upstream now and is included in our recent package update
as a backport

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/merge_requests/741
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/1:3.36.4-1ubuntu1

The new design includes new strings, those are going to be translation
upstream in the new serie but since we decided to apply those changes to
focal as well it would be better to have the translations updated on
launchpad earlier so they are available in the incoming LTS .1

You can find the strings on
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/groovy/+source/gnome-control-center/+pots/gnome-control-center-2.0/fr/+translate?show=untranslated
(change 'fr' by your locale)

(the strings are going to be available for focal as well once the SRU is
accepted but since the translations are shared between launchpad series
it doesn't really matter)

Upstream translations imports to cosmic might be missing (due to translations sharing launchpad option)

2018-10-10 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Hey translators,

It's the not the first time/cycle that option creates issue, but when
"sharing with an upstream vcs" is being used then the translations from
the package uploads are not being imported.

In theory the vcs sharing is a nice idea, but in practice most of the
GNOME upstream imports on launchpad are outdated or buggy and as a
result the translations don't get updates.

Unsure how that option get turned on again but it was activate on most
desktop/GNOME components (if someone did that please don't do it
again!). I did go through the main applications/desktop component, unset
the option and did no change uploads to cosmic to get the source
translations imported, I didn't do rebuilds for every package though
since a good part looked like they had uptodate enough translations. If
you have a project that you think would benefit from an new import
though, feel free to respond to this email.

New gnome-control-center strings

2018-05-04 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Hey there,

One of the features we landed in 18.04 is support for thunderbolt
devices authentification. We missed the gnome-control-center integration
(to be able to review/revoke auths) because it landed a bit late
upstream, but we plan to include that in a SRU.

In preparation for that update I manually refreshed the launchpad
translations template to include the new strings.

The strings are now available on
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/bionic/+source/gnome-control-center

(see the "untranslated" column, or they have currently the ids 577 to 595)

The translations team should have time to work on those before the next
language pack export, once we have those in a langpacks update we can
SRU the UI in an user friendly way.

Since those projects have been Ubuntu focussed and translators on
launchpad are usually working on Ubuntu translations and since we have
the translations in good shape for the indicators I think it would make
sense to keep using langpacks.

That means adding "X-Ubuntu-Use-Langpack: yes" to their debian/control
and doing an upload.

The other way would be to export/download the translations for each
indicators, copy them/commit to the source and do an upload. But then
you need to keep doing that or you need to communicate to translators
that they need to submit their fixes to those projects.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/langpack-o-matic/+bug/1201485 (translations
are not imported from daily builds, which are used for most of the unity
stack, which leads to outdated template (we need to update them manually
to workaround)

Updated template for unity-lens-video: new strings to translate

2013-04-22 Thread Sebastien Bacher

Hey everyone,

I'm looking a bit at https://launchpad.net/bugs/1074038
(broken/untranslatable strings in the dash previews).

I noticed that the unity-lens-video template was incomplete (missing
file in POTFILES.in), a new one has been uploaded which leads to a few
new strings to translate on:

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/raring/+source/unity-lens-video

You can see those if you go to the dash, video lens, and right click on
an online video

update-notifier: $package string shouldn't be translated

2013-04-17 Thread Sebastien Bacher

Hey,

I'm updating the packages that don't use langpacks to include
translations for raring.

The updated .po files for update-notifier were creating some issues
because $package, which is a variable name, got translated in a few
locales when it shouldn't.

(ideally it shouldn't be in the translations template at all, but it
seems a bit difficult to exclude since it's in the middle of a text
description in a .data file and there is no way to filter it out or mark
it as non translatable)

I've reverted the translations for that specific string, in the
upload, for those locales:

am.po
crh.po
se.po
sr.po

It would be good if the string could also be fixed in launchpad by the
corresponding translation teams

Thanks,
Sebastien Bacher

Hey Sylvie,

Indeed, I would know how to do that for a .c source file but the
translation comes from a .data.in text file which is like that

some text
.
 $package
.
some extra text

and the translation system splits each line in a string to translate ...
I'm not sure how that could be replaced or how a comment could be added
in the middle of the text...

ubuntu-docs: template got updated, new strings to translate

2013-04-17 Thread Sebastien Bacher

Hey everyone,

Short story:
the ubuntu-docs template just got updated, you have new strings to translate

Long story:
While playing with my raring desktop this morning I notice that the
desktop guide's french version was still having what's new in Ubuntu
12.10 on its frontpage. Turns out it's because the current template was
outdated. I fixed that an uploaded an updated one. The update is
resulting in updated content for the translated pages, but broken
translations as well. (looking to the french summary there has been an
increase of about about 100 untranslated strings)

Sorry for the late change, we might need to be able to squeeze another
upload to update translations tomorrow for the team that are going to do
updates today, otherwise we will have to fix those in a SRU

Updated unity template (raring)

2013-03-25 Thread Sebastien Bacher

Hey translators,

Due to the new way unity landing are done, and some overlook in the
process, we didn't have any update of the translation templates for the
unity stack in raring. I've fixed that on friday, by uploading new
templates, so unity should have around 90 new strings to translate.

(Note that I also updated the music scope template with the version
including the strings from the in dash payment branch:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1154176 ... the ffe
didn't get accepted yet but at least if it does we will have an head
start on translations, otherwise the strings will be used in s-serie)

Hi,

That was an issue with the translation template, I've regenerated an
updated one and uploaded it to launchpad, those strings should be
available if you refresh.

Note to translators, some of the strings come from the Ubuntu Online
Account Ubuntu patch so there is translation work to do downstream
(on launchpad)

gdm: gdmsetup strings are ubuntu specific

Hi,

That's just a note for team which consider gdm as something to be

tool gdmsetup in karmic is ubuntu specific and the string should be
translated in rosetta too, the strings are in the gdm template.

translating the categories in the totem BBC plugin or not?

2009-03-06 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Hi everybody,

It has been noticed that the current BBC plugin is not translatable and
a patch has been sent on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/329573

The change add the list of categories to the translatable strings and I
would gather some opinion on whether people think that's a good idea or
not knowing that the media content available is in english.
On one side having translated categories would look nicer in the
interface on the other side that could mislead people to think the
medias will be in their language.

Cheers,

fixed gnome-utils non translatable strings

the change has also been commited upstream in trunk so those might be
translated upstream for GNOME 2.22.1 too.
