You just add i8042.debug to the rest of the kernel options in the boot
loader (the same place where you specify root device, etc).

Hi,

I am also being affected by this issue (fixed by adding a reasonable
-dpi to KDM startup command) but I am using xserver-xorg-video-intel

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 444139] Re: (Needs KMS) Background and full screen apps don't show up when Normal Visual Effects on (Radeon 7500)

I have downgraded the mesa drivers to 7.4.0-ubuntu3.2 (the most recent I
could find). This seems to have partially returned Jaunty performance,
but not quite. Anything that involves true 3D (e.g Tux Race, Compiz
cube) really struggles and Flash performance very poor.

As this is a new install, I have no xorg.conf (it's my understanding
that this file is not used any more).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 442441] Re: Touchpad and mouse buttons not working after upgrade from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10

2009-11-11 Thread VinceLe
I have a very similar problem.

I was running karmic on 2.6.31 almost fine (evdev was as usual completely not
working so I used kbd)
yesterday it was working and now the xserver doesn't start with:
(EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed (8)

it's xorg-server 2:1.6.4-2ubuntu4

I tried xorg-edgers ppa, still not working, I tried evdev back and
forth, no luck either

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 426582] Re: (32MB) certain windows drawn garbled when XAA is used

2009-11-11 Thread Colin Beckingham
Toshiba Satellite 1110 with small video memory also has this problem.
Tried above suggestions related to xorg.conf and acceleration settings, this
results in a system that refuses to boot into Ubuntu and has to be hard reset.
What does work (so far) on this machine is to set System - Preferences -
Appearance - Visual Effects to None.
However good luck getting to change the setting in the GUI since it defaults to
Normal which is marginally usable on this old machine.

the same behavior here with a intel 855GM graphic chip and the karmic
release. Only booting with acpi=off option helps so that X is not
freezing anymore, the boot option nomodeset does not change anything,
X will still freeze after a while.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 480655] [NEW] X crashed after suspend, respawned X was unresponsive to keyboard and mouse

2009-11-11 Thread Rupert Millard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This is a Dell Inspiron 1501 with a Radeon Xpress 200M. (I assume
further hardware detail was attached by ubuntu-bug, but if not I will
happily try to provide further details.)

I suspended at 10:41 and tried to resume at 11:01. My screen contents
never reappeared and I was taken to a (graphical) log-in screen. At this
screen, my system was unresponsive to keyboard or touchpad, but it shut
down cleanly when I pressed the power button. (ie. I did not have to
power cycle it.) I think what had happened was that the X server crashed
on resume and was respawned although without keyboard or touchpad.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 480655] Re: X crashed after suspend, respawned X was unresponsive to keyboard and mouse

2009-11-11 Thread Rupert Millard
New graphics glitches for me in Karmic.

I'm almost loathe to mention it, but I have noticed glitches in the
graphics since installing Karmic - unfortunately the only one I can
reliably reproduce is with Tetris! I never had problems of this sort
with the radeon driver in 9.04 or previous, so I wonder if they are
related? (The only issue I've had before on this hardware is that VT
switching never worked with the radeon driver.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 373367] Re: Pointer goes offscreen on non-rectangular dual-head

2009-11-11 Thread nZain
In reply to #3, with karmic the issue stil remains unchanged / unsolved
-- since the virtual screen is rectangular, but the physical is not.
Does anyone know a workaround (like blocking mouse pointer from entering
specific coordinates)? I don't know how mouse cursors are handled in
ubuntu, so I don't even know where to start looking. I'd be willing to
write my own code, too.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 480717] [NEW] syndaemon doesn't accept device name option

2009-11-11 Thread mohrtutchy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

Since SHMConfig option is not needed, there is no way to set the right target
device for syndaemon when there are two touchpads or more.
This is a patch for syndaemon to add a -n option for the device name
http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=202431action=view

I suppose that the same thing could be done for synclient.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 373367] Re: Pointer goes offscreen on non-rectangular dual-head

2009-11-11 Thread l0b0
Why is this set as Wishlist? If the mouse pointer could be moved
outside the display area on a single monitor, that's a clear bug. I
don't see how this is different, except that it's more technically
challenging.

A suggestion for the fix: Make sure the physical displacement of the
mouse pointer when moving from one screen to the other is minimal, based
on the layout and resolutions specified in the GNOME display
preferences.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447403] Re: Tapping upper right corner no longer produces middle click in Karmic

2009-11-11 Thread Łukasz Halman
I agree too. I don't understand this change. It's counterproductive.
Middle click has been very important mouse action in linux. It's not
windows nor mac. We need 3 buttons.

Sure you can press left and right button at once and generate middle
click. But it requires two fingers to acomplish that. It hurts
productivity.

If some new linux users feel that using touchpad for moving pointer
around, scrolling and having 3 types of click is too much.. Ok. I can
understand that, but lets give them option to turn some of it off then.

Lets not dumb down ubuntu this way, please.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 373367] Re: Pointer goes offscreen on non-rectangular dual-head

2009-11-11 Thread Necrathex
Same problem with my ATI card on Karmic, especially annoying since my
desktop has the smaller screen (of 2) on the left side, and any icons
that are automatically placed on the desktop will be placed in the
'virtual desktop void' on top of the screen, where I can't see them.

So it's not just the mouse cursor being able to go there, but also
desktop icons (I think the same also goes for menus and such). Would be
nice for xorg/ubuntu's multi-head support if this got fixed :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477149] Re: Failsafe X support added in proposed upload still doesn't work

2009-11-11 Thread Mario Limonciello
I can verify that the new proposed upload works properly.

@Roman:
The new functionality does not depend upon dexconf. The failsafe xorg.conf is
generated by just cat'ing it out.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 397420] Re: jaunty, xserver crash on startup, toshiba tecra m1

2009-11-11 Thread Hanns Fuerniss
O.K. That seem probable, because it's the gdm image that appears.
I removed gdm completly and made the changes /etc/gdm -- /etc/gdm_save too. It
works up to now. Thanks Thomi.

I'm still using Kubuntu jaunty (9.04), but I made the change from Ubuntu
(gdm) to Kubuntu (kdm) and that's why there was a gdm installed on my
system.

Well, during that time I investigated a little more about the graphics system
and found that it could be something with RandR (definitly not the hal package
bacause it's all about input devices - sorry, I didn't understand that.)
My assumption is because of: if I use the raw xorg.conf with nearly no
specifications about my graphics system, it works fine. No message about low
graphics mode - but it's running in 800x600 solution on 800x600 pixels, means
leaves a black frame on my monitor. I tried to modify the RandR configuration
like in http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/RandR but the frame didn't disappear, I
only had a bigger screen 'behind' the frame (like looking through a hole of
800x600).
With the modified xorg.conf (s.a.) and the changes of /etc/gdm it works.
I didn't update to 9.10 because I'm dependent on a running stystem at the
moment. I'll do that as soon as possible.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 480744] [NEW] Failsafe X stuff shouldn't be stored in /etc/gdm

2009-11-11 Thread Mario Limonciello
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

x11-common: 1:7.4+3ubuntu10

Since everything in /etc/ is treated as conffiles, it's more easily
possible to run into a scenario where someone modifies or removes the
failsafe X stuff. It should be stored elsewhere on the system.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 480747] [NEW] Failsafe X doesn't always overwrite /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe

2009-11-11 Thread Mario Limonciello
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

x11-common: 1:7.4+3ubuntu10

The failsafe stuff makes the assumption that the content of this file
has not been modified and will always work. Since it's treated as a
conffile in /etc, it's very possible that someone has overwritten this
file.

It would be better to keep this file in a static place elsewhere on the
system and never overwrite it, just refer to the file when failsafe X
mode is started.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 480777] [NEW] Pressure sensitivity support insuficient

2009-11-11 Thread coCoKNIght
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-aiptek

I've got a G-Pen 560 which identifies itself as Aiptek. It works in Jaunty with
the Aiptek driver, with the Wacom driver and with the Wizardpen driver, but
with the Aiptek driver pressure sensitivity doesn't work well, If I draw a line
with pressure set to opacity and applying almost no pressure at the start of
the line and gradually increase pressure until reaching full pressure and
ending the line I should get a nice gradient from white to black (as is the
case with the other drivers). Instead I get the same light gray all the way to
the middle of the line where a very short gradient transitions to full black
which stays the color for the second half of the line.
I've tested this with multiple applications that support pressure sensitivity
and with different settings for the .fdi file (zMax to 1023 and to 511)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 401164] Re: [GM45] crash on intel GM45 with screen offset 770

2009-11-11 Thread Stephan
I didn't find the time to test with karmic until today.
Good news: the reported crash no longer occurs, I can place
both displays side by side for a virtual desktop of 2304 x 800.

This doesn't really solve the problem for me since unfortunately
Xorg is prohibitively slow on this machine with karmic: redrawing
a konsole window takes several seconds with 100% CPU for Xorg.

Still I wouldn't object if this issue is closed.

Okay, closing this bug. If you have time to follow up it would be nice
if you could report the performance problem as a new bug (preferably
with `ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel`). There are a few things you
may check for at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/IntelPerformance . Some of
that information looks outdated, though, in particular EXA and XAA are
no longer possible options.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477149] Re: Failsafe X support added in proposed upload still doesn't work

2009-11-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
There is one command in the GUI which still tries to generate via
dexconf. That probably should be disabled too, but that's separate from
this issue. First goal should just be to get user into the low graphics
mode so they can proceed with reinstalling -nvidia or whatever.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 451697] Re: Xorg pegs CPU, desktop performance suffers after Karmic upgrade

2009-11-11 Thread Stephan
Seeing the same symptom I would like to test whether downgrading
xserver-xorg-video-intel
to 2.8.1 would help on my machine, too. However, all debs between 2.6.3 and
2.9.0
seem to have disappeared from the net. Could you please share the working deb?

Thanks

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 480906] Re: [Karmic] NVIDIA 7600GS + Samsung SyncMaster 913TM (DVI): X cannot start (No valid modes)

2009-11-11 Thread Nikita Ivanitski
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-vesa

- Karmic LiveCD is unusable on my machine because at the moment when X should
start I see frequently flashing console with login string (looks like X tries
to start, but doesn't stop trying).
+ Karmic LiveCD is unusable on my machine because at the moment when X should
start I see frequently flashing console with login string (looks like X
vainly tries to start, but doesn't stop trying).
After upgrading from Jaunty (where vesa works fine) to Karmic when trying to
use vesa driver (1:2.2.1-1) or just removing any other suitable drivers I
experience the same problem: the white ubuntu logo goes out and nothing but
infinitely flashing console.
Workaround: installing xserver-xorg-video-vesa package from jaunty
(1:2.0.0-1ubuntu6) solves problem.

Also I noticed that -nv driver doesn't work(the same symptoms but
Xorg.log looks different) after upgrade (I don't know if it correlate
somehow with vesa problem). Installing -nv package from Jaunty also
helps. Should I submit separate bug report for -nv or should I provide
  Xorg.log for -nv right here?

  P.S. Excuse my English.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 464874] Re: [i965GM] Slow and tearing scrolling with composite enabled

2009-11-11 Thread Alex Cabal
This bug is also affecting me. I have an Intel GM965 on a Dell Vostro
1400 laptop. As time goes on, desktop performance degrades terribly. I
get tearing when scrolling in applications like Firefox and Gedit,
window effects like minimize/maximize and fading, etc. are choppy and
slow, and even input like key presses and mouse clicks are delayed.
It's frustrating. I've never submitted a bug report before, so I don't
know what kind of info to attach, but let me know and I'll include
anything I can provide to get this fixed.

resolution back!! Compiz compositing can't be enabled, and the overall
performance when drawing windows is still a bit turtlier (I meant slow).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 258158] Re: mplayer vlc kaffeine all players hang/pause when I switch away from the VT they use (to other desktop or terminal)

2009-11-11 Thread Shentino
Reopening this bug because I have new information to report, and also
because I was recently a victim of the bug at least with the latest
Jaunty.

I also seem to run into trouble with sox playing stuff on a bare VT and
switching away from that...same symptoms.

One factor I've noticed is that if the target and source VTs have
different owners, i.e., different users are logged in to each, then the
sound suspends.

So, since it also happens even when X isn't running it might not be an
xorg issue after all. Even sticking purely to text-mode VTs it happens.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461163] Re: Gnome Freezes -- Ubuntu 9.10 -- big time freezes.

2009-11-11 Thread Julien
I found a workaround to this issue for those of you who have an intel
graphic card (which is what HP Pavillion PCs come with).
you must revert to an older version of the graphic card driver by following
these instructions:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReinhardTartler/X/RevertingIntelDriverTo2.4

The instructions were intended for Jaunty but they also work for 9.10

Of course, since the system hangs, you need to start in recovery mode to
run those instruction from the command line.

Just did an upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 from 9.04 ... upgrade went ok.. then
within 30 seconds in Gnome.. it freezes... freezes to the point where I
can't even move the mouse, type anything.. must do hard reboot.

Now Gnome failsafe works fine, I installed KDE to see if that works.. no
 problem... just Gnome.

I can't even see what the problem is because the computer locks up to the
point where a hard reboot is needed.

 It's a Compaq Presario - Celeron D
 Intel 950 Video Card
 1.5 GB ram

I cannot provide you with any more information regarding it because
honestly the computer locks up to the point where I can't reach terminal or
click on anything to find out what is wrong.

Now I am not a big fan of having to use Gnome Failsafe... I can provide
you any information you need when the computer is in Gnome failsafe.. but I
cannot report squat when it locks up in Gnome

Worth Nothing, this machine ran Ubuntu 9.04 without fail or errors...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 471844] Re: X crash

2009-11-11 Thread Argyle
For now, I have restored usability to my system by downgrading the
xserver-xorg-video-intel package to a jaunty version. I used the
following method:

1) Downloaded:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/27624866/xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.6.3-0ubuntu9.3_i386.deb
2) sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.6.3-0ubuntu9.3_i386.deb
3) sudo aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-intel=2:2.6.3-0ubuntu9.3
4) echo xserver-xorg-video-intel hold | sudo dpkg --set-selections
5) Verified hold by issuing: apt-get -s upgrade

(Source: http://tech.akom.net/archives/45-Upgrading-to-Ubuntu-9.10
-Karmic-Koala-breaks-X-xorg-on-intel-driver-on-945G-chipset.html)

I was able to re-enable gdm, my text consoles work now, the font
corruption has gone away, the crashes from changing the desktop
background are gone and the 10 second delays seen when switching between
windows are gone. I still don't have dri, but I do have a usable
desktop now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 395476] Re: nvidia sets HUE to -1000

2009-11-11 Thread D Becker
I have two laptops with nvidia hardware, both running karmic, both using
the 185.18.36-0ubuntu9 driver packages. The GeForce Go 7700 does not
suffer from this bug, but the GTX280M does... however the videobalance
hue=-1... workaround noted above (comment #11) only works for me if I
use 1 instead of -1.

Selecting X Window System (No Xv) also works, but greatly increases
the CPU usage for high-res video... I'd imagine with a slower machine
that could be a problem.

Using the videobalance hue=... workaround on the 7700 actually
_causes_ the hue to be messed up on that machine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 464378] Crash report cannot be processed

2009-11-11 Thread Apport retracing service
Thank you for your report!

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate an useful symbolic stack trace). This
might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on your system
at the time of the report:

libcups2: installed version 1.4.1-5ubuntu2, latest version:
1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1

Please upgrade your system to the latest package versions. If you still
encounter the crash, please file a new report.

Thank you for your understanding, and sorry for the inconvenience!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 455628] Re: Open source drivers rotate textures on ATI Xpress 200M under wine

2009-11-11 Thread Jeremy Wilkins
I have received no feedback since I posted this last month. My curiosity is
whether this may be a weak ATI OSS video driver implementation issue exposed by
a 32bit/64bit conflict. The wine layer technically runs everything in 32bit
mode on a 64bit architecture running 3D against a 64bit driver which is a very
complicated situation to say the least.
Paul: What is your arch? 64 or 32 bit?
Please post the output of:
uname -r
uname -m
lspci
glxinfo

Once we have this info we may be able to figure out where it's going
wrong. In the mean time, I will test a 32bit live CD on my laptop to
see if that may bypass the issue. If the live CD works it may be a
problem with the OSS video driver's implementation of 32bit 3D rendering
in 64bit mode. If not, I suspect that it may be related to embedded
Mobility chips and an incomplete implementation of software TCL. I
remember that the closed source drivers on their final release for my
hardware finally started working properly, but until that driver they
also would not work right I'm just not sure what changed. i know the
9600 [RV350] is a desktop card which has hardware TCL, but my laptop
does not. I am curious to know whether or not your card has hardware
TCL Paul.
