[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] [ubuntu 9.10] [ubuntu 10.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled

2010-03-30 Thread Alf Gaida
Hi,
after switching from VirtualBox to real hardware, the good old
ATI-Backclear-Bug appears. Doing nice things as searching for another linux
distribution i decided to give lucid a chance. As described in the artikle
below i downloaded patch and the actual X server and patched it folloing
Daëavelwyn:

Comment 256 for bug 351186
Daëavelwyn wrote on 2009-10-10:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/351186/comments/256

In a few words: download, patch, build, install, smile. The speed issues
are gone and i can't see memory leaks in my system. All seems to be o.k.
this time. Thanks to Daëavelwyn, Felix and all others belong to this
problem.

I think that's a shame that this bug isn't fixed for a so long time, but
it's not the fault of Ubuntu, Debian ore someone in the Distributions. I
have tried all major distries with the same result: The bug occurs. Do
the people at Xorg nor ATI no about it. The bug occurs with several Xorg
servers and ATI-drivers. Why to fuck doesn't anybody analyse and fix
this shit for ever. Patching is nice but dosn't solve the problem. If
there are any ideas for promoting this bug, tell me. I'm fixing this
fucking pice of code the xx. time and it sucks off. Any time i get a new
version i have to do this and dont now as the fix will work. Its sucks.
Buying a nvidia card can't be the klue. (Whats about my Dell Studio with
ATI). For my second Workstation i solved the problem finally. i bought a
mainbord with a Intel G41 on it. Without the patch it work faster then
my main-desktop. it's really a showstopper for new Linux (Ubuntu) users,
as i have to patch a grown driver in front of a noob...

If i know to set up a ppa i would.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 546933] Re: FFE: xorg.conf.d/inputclass backport

2010-03-30 Thread Steve Langasek
I agree that we want to avoid shipping an intermediate solution with
udev rules if xorg.conf.d is the long-term solution.

However, to the server, this will look equivalent to having an xorg.conf
again, won't it? I know there have been significant behavior
differences (and bugs) in the past between a server with no xorg.conf
and one with an xorg.conf, even minimal. What sort of plan is there to
regression-test this?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 546933] Re: FFE: xorg.conf.d/inputclass backport

2010-03-30 Thread Timo Aaltonen
If you mean that the video driver autoconfig works differently when
there's an xorg.conf, then the autoconfig/fallback patch from SUSE fixes
that. And if there's a Driver section in xorg.conf, the autoconfig path
is bypassed (like before).

I'm not aware of (or can't remember) other differences having a minimal
xorg.conf or none at all.

edit

yes it's included, that's the whole point of this being accepted in
debian :) (because it's sort of a failsafe mode to fall back on
vesa/fbdev if the primary driver doesn't work)

I'm unfamiliar with the ion window manager (it's not one we regularly

this appears to be more a personal configuration issue than a real bug

You don't need a Brazilian Windows. You just need a US keyboard and make '

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363238] Re: [RV100] very poor Xorg performance on various older graphics HW - XAA no longer works

2010-03-30 Thread Bryce Harrington
Alright, well look - first this already has been sent upstream and is
marked fixed there. So this is a lame duck bug report. Second, this is
a bug against really old hardware, which is not really much of a
priority for us. Third, it's a performance issue, which while important
is not something we generally do a lot of work on at the distro level
except in macro terms.

I am closing the bug as wont fix because I think whatever needs done
here needs to be done upstream. Normally I would help you by sending
the bug upstream, but since this already has an upstream task that is
closed, that is no longer possible. If you are willing to file a NEW
bug, we might still help out. But otherwise I think it's best we close
this bug and encourage you to go upstream directly to get their
assistance for this hardware.

want to file your own bug report upstream about it if it's still an
issue with latest -ati bits.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 305301] Re: [RC410] Xpress 200M hangs when resuming from suspend with DRI (needs KMS)

2010-03-30 Thread Bryce Harrington
The upstream bug task on this report appears to be closed as fixed.
Given the large number of comments on this bug I think maybe it's grown
stale.

A couple options going forward:
a) Dupe this bug report to #509273 if it is indeed the same problem
b) File a new bug report upstream at bugs.freedesktop.org about the current
state of the problem, and link a new upstream bug task here

Please let us know what option you think should be taken here. And if
(b), if you feel like it please go ahead and do it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 189393] Re: [RS100] [U1] TV not detected with Radeon IGP 320M

2010-03-30 Thread Bryce Harrington
I see the upstream bug report is closed, suggesting the issue may now be
resolved.

If it isn't, please reopen the upstream bug report (or file a new bug
report). Given the age of the hardware this bug is reported against, it
is not an issue we're likely to work on here at the distro level, so I
think it would be better to work on upstream.

I see that gimp is marking this bug resolved, and there's been no recent
comments that this is still an issue, so I'm going to tentatively and

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550801] Re: Xorg uses 35-55% CPU all time and fan runs continually

2010-03-30 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Trond, counter-intuitively, most high-CPU bugs with X.org are not
actually X bugs but rather an issue with some client application. X is
just a server, and will consume whatever CPU is necessary to meet client
application requests, so generally these bugs are really against to
whatever client app that is driving X too hard. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/HighCPU for help at
identifying what client app is causing it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 537169] Re: X hangs on startup

2010-03-30 Thread Kevin
Unfortunately, it is still occurring, just not 100% of the time anymore.
In general, it requires anywhere between 1 and 10 tries to start up the
X server successfully. Somewhat oddly, it seems to always start up
successfully immediately after installing an xserver package update, as
well as after booting into OSX. (I'm on a Macbook...) After that, it is
back to being random.

Also, while the behaviour is the same as before, I haven't been able to
locate a similar segmentation fault as the one I originally posted in
any more logs. Also interestingly, every time it freezes, the caps lock
key still responds, however, if I try and switch VT (Ctrl-alt-f1) then
it really locks up and nothing responds.

FYI this is now after the 2.6.32.18 kernel updates and everything else
as of Mar 30th.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 537169] Re: X hangs on startup

2010-03-30 Thread Kevin
So, if the Xorg.0.log.old file works as I assume (the .old file is the
previous boot...) then I have attached here a successful boot (the
Xorg.0.log file) and an unsuccessful boot (the Xorg.0.log.old file).

The most obvious difference is these two lines at the end of the
unsuccessful boot:

(WW) Apple Computer Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad: unable to handle
keycode 464
(II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch

However, I have a suspicion that could be the full on lockup that occurs
when I tried to switch to VT1 after it got stuck.

There are a couple more differences between the files, but I'll leave
that to the experts to look at...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 537169] Re: X hangs on startup

2010-03-30 Thread Kevin
A little more interesting details I've figured out here... sorry for all
the posts but I've been trying to figure out what's causing this...

The odd time it does boot up properly with KMS on, (to be clear here, it
boots up ok if I set nomodeset at grub...) it will crash in the exact
same way if I switch to another VT and then try and go back to VT7. The
last line written in the Xorg.0.log file is:

(II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch

When I have disabled KMS, the process of switching VT's and back leaves
these lines:

(II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch
(II) Open ACPI successful (/var/run/acpid.socket)
(II) AIGLX: Resuming AIGLX clients after VT switch

So it would appear something is happening when trying to open ACPI.
Now, in the files I attached before, the time my boot was successful,
Xorg.0.log reports an error:

(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or
directory)

Perhaps the successful boots are only occurring when there is some sort
of error here? My unsuccessful boot log has a success line here...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 534677] Re: [lucid] Broken backlight control with Radeon open-source drivers

2010-03-30 Thread bodwick
On HP ProBook 4710s (ati hd4330 with fglrx driver) I have a similar problem:
- can't control the lcd backlight using gnome-power-manager
- can't control the lcd backlight using xbacklight
- CAN change the backlight using 'echo -n 0
/proc/acpi/video/DGFX/LCD/brightness'
- when switching to battery the screen gets dimmer
- function keys which used to control backlight don't work any more (used to
work out of the box on Karmic)

Best regards
Szymon

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550407] Re: Secondary monitor does not work on ATI HD5770

2010-03-30 Thread Bryce Harrington
This seems likely to be an output enablement issue, which with KMS is an
issue in the kernel drm, so I'm refiling to the kernel.

It would be instructive if you could attempt to reboot with KMS disabled
and see if that makes any difference.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549601] Re: No Fullscreen-3D/Resolution switching with KMS enabled

2010-03-30 Thread Bryce Harrington
Is this a regression? Were you able to play 3D games with earlier
versions? Please try re-booting with earlier kernels (go into grub to
select them) and see if that is sufficient to get the 3D games to work
properly again.

Since disabling KMS is enough to make this work properly, I'm gathering
that this is an issue with the DRM code in the kernel. So I'll reassign
to the kernel for now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 517949] Re: Twinview changes theme and locks part of it

2010-03-30 Thread Holgersson
I've to acknowledge that bug running on karmic 32bit.

A first possibility to correct that phenomen, you can try this:

click with right mouse-button on your desktop - change wallpaper (in
German it is 'Hintergrund der Arbeitsfläche ändern'; last entry). Then
you've to quit nautilus (nautilus -q) and your desktop is as it was
before.
