[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1244827] Re: [13.10] Ubuntu detects a non-existing screen

2014-02-15 Thread Peter Mainstone-Mitchell
A workaround is to go to System Settings then to Screen Display.

You'll see a screen labeled Unknown Display.

Click on this and you'll see that the On/Off 'switch' below will now
show On.

Click it to Off and the effects of the Unknown Screen will go away.

I have a notebook with an external 24 monitor and the effects for me
were -

1. The Desktop pics was duplicated in the top LH corner of my ext
monitor screen with it's own Launcher (I fixed the separate launcher by
setting Launcher placement to only the ext monitor but couldn't get rid
of the dupe desktop pic)

2. The mouse kept flickering

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1242767] Re: 10de:03d0 [HP Pavilion Slimline s5310y Desktop PC ] Freeze trying to exit gnome-control-center

2014-02-15 Thread Daniel Bergløv
I hope this issue is still beeing worked on. I can confirm the same
issue after switching from my internal Intel graphics to an nVidia card
using nouveau. Any graphics required job, even running Eclipse (Java
Drawing Jobs), will make the mashine freeze up 10-30 times during an 8
hour working day.

I found it a big help to switch to tty1 with ctrl+alt+F1 and then back
with ctrl+alt+F7/F8. This would make it return to normal a lot faster,
and unstuck it most of the times it seems to be totally stuck.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1280653] [NEW] Xorg freeze

SSD:

Problem seems to be somewhere between Kernel, SSD, BIOS, SATA support.
Already have the latest BIOS for my Laptop. System got more stable since
I installed new Kernel (3.11 instead of 3.8) and use btrfs-Filesystem
now. But still several freezes per day, especcially while browsing
complicated (java?)-websites.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1280658] [NEW] Random screen freeze on Ubuntu 13.10; mouse and sound continue working

2014-02-15 Thread Krzysztof Janowicz
Public bug reported:

In addition to my system, this bug occurs on 3 other laptops in my lab
(2x Thinkpad and 1x Macbook air). The bug seems 13.10 specific as other
installations are not affected.

My Macbook Pro 11.3 has Kernel 3.13. When the screen freezes, sound
(e.g., skype) still works and I can move the mouse but not click. I
'solve' this by going to the terminal and restarting lightdm by 'sudo
service lightdm restart' but of course this is still not a real
solution.

It seems to me (but this is really just a speculation) that the freeze
occurs more often shortly (10-60min) after connecting or disconnecting
to/from an external screen.

Sometimes, when I switch to tty1 to restart lightdm, the terminal is
flooded with 'Wrong Mac address' messages but this is probably
unrelated.

I changed to gdm in hope that this may fix the bug but judging by the
reports from this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-
server/+bug/1184451 this will not do the trick.

Let me know if you need more logs, etc.

Thanks,
Krzysztof

Glamor egl has very poor support of latest AMD graphics chips. It causes
Xorg segfaults on resume from suspend and poor 2d performance. With

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1254442] Re: [SRU] Please upgrade to new upstream release v.13.12 (has support for Saucy's Kernel 3.11)

2014-02-15 Thread papukaija
** Tags removed: upgrade-software-version
** Tags added: saucy

** Description changed:

- Please upgrade to new upstream release v. 13.12.
+ Please upgrade Saucy's fglrx-installer (and/or -updates) to the new
+ upstream release v. 13.12.

  [Impact]

This driver supports Kernel up to 3.11 and Xorg up to 1.14; ie. it
should fully work on Ubuntu 13.10.

The version 13.11 Beta V9.4 also fixes the following issues:

[372656] : Resolves crash when resizing Konsole
[388325] : Resolves brightness adjustment issues
[388818] : Resolves kernel module compile failure when
CONFIG_UIDGID_STRICT_TYPE_CHECKS is enabled
[388335] : Avoids the new GPL symbol acpi_bus_get_device for new kernel
support
[386897] : Resolves system hang on resume from S4 with OpenGL screen
saver running

The change log for the v. 13.12 is in comment 3 below.

It might make sense to also upgrade the stable package, as the v. 13.11
beta 9.4. is the first version that has native support for Saucy's
  Kernel.

Source and more information can be found from http://support.amd.com/en-
  us/kb-articles/Pages/Latest-LINUX-Beta-Driver.aspx and
  http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-
  articles/Pages/amdcatalyst13-12linreleasenotes.aspx

-
  [Test Case]

After installing the update, users should be able to boot the system as
usual, with no regressions of any kind.

  [Regression Potential]

Low. The new driver version doesn't add any new features apart from
having a native support for Kernel 3.11. All other changes are bug
  fixes.

-
  Thanks.

** Summary changed:

- [SRU] Please upgrade to new upstream release v.13.12 (has support for Saucy's
Kernel 3.11)
+ [SRU] Please upgrade Saucy's fglrx to new upstream release v.13.12 (has
support for Kernel 3.11)

I adapted the wording on this bug to make it clearer that this is a SRU
request for Saucy and not a request to upgrade fglrx's version in
Trusty.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1280690] [NEW] 2 pixels shift on the second screen (extended desktop)

2014-02-15 Thread Kevin C.
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I have 2 screens and there is a 2 pixels shift to the right on the
display on my second screen (see attached picture).

This bug is clearly the same that the one reported here :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1253885
I opened a clone, as suggested by apport-collect, in order to attach more
information if it is useful for developers.

I encounter this issue with Ubuntu 13.10 and 14.04. I'm reporting this
bug from Ubuntu 14.04 (downloaded today, here http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ ) as requested in ticket #1253885

I'm available to provide further information if necessary.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1273832] Re: [fglrx] Lockscreen/lid-close xserver freeze if UXA accel used.

2014-02-15 Thread Anthony Kamau
Recently I underwent a botched nvidia-prime install that left a bitter taste in
my mouth:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-prime/+bug/1249067

I had to purge my system of all nvidia drivers (apt-get --purge remove
nvidia\*), then reinstall them:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee

After reinstallation, when my screen goes blank after idling, sometimes
it resumes to the desktop, other times I'm left at a black screen with
moving cursor that appears to indicate the screen is actually there, but
just not visible. The mouse cursor will change from a pointer to a hand
(if it happens to hover over a hyperlink in the browser), or a 'I' (when
it hovers over a text input area). I kept searching for a solution that
related to the Xorg system, but everything I threw at it (the little I
know about X) didn't bear fruit. In the end, I just simply had to go to
a console (CTRL+ALT+F1) to restart lightdm to get my desktop back. When
working with multiple windows and having many applications open, losing
the desktop can cause one to experiance weird emotions and exhibit
irrational actions; and it gets really old, really fast!

To cut a long story short, today I got fedup with it and started killing
anything that interracts with the display system (sometimes fatally that
I had to reboot by holding power button down for 5secs) to get this
sorted. Interestingly, the culprit appears to be compiz. I can now
duplicate this easily:

1. launch screensaver preferences (i use xscreensaver)
2. select a GL screensaver (the black screen with mouse occurs more often with
such a screensaver)
3. click Preview button then hit the ESC key to return to desktop repeatedly
until the black screen+mouse appears
4. CTRL+ALT+F1 to go to console window 1 and run the command: kill -9 $(pgrep
compiz)
5 CTRL+ALT+F7 to return to GUI desktop - you should see your desktop minus the
open windows
6 move mouse cursor to get compiz to reactivate itself and bring all your open
applications into view

Hopefully this workaround will keep people like me sane for a little
longer...

Cheers,
ak.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1268275] Re: 10de:07e1 [HP Pavilion p6020jp Desktop PC] Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze

2014-02-15 Thread Colin Silvester
Hi Christopher,

To be honest, I don't recall. I only very recently loaded Ubuntu on this
particular machine and don't remember from which version I started.
I have another HP Pavilion desktop machine which has been running Ubuntu for
several years and I've never had the same issue. However, it has a different
graphics card.

I would be happy to install a later version of Ubuntu on the machine
that does have the issue, provided that version is as stable as regular
releases (either the .04 or .10 releases)...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1262860] Re: on live session in precise daily images, wrong resolution

2014-02-15 Thread John Kim
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1252534] Re: Dual Monitors dont work

2014-02-15 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Mike Dorsett, thank you for testing Trusty. As a potential WORKAROUND,
do the proprietary nvidia drivers demonstrate this problem following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia ?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1093399] Re: Separate X screen not working, regression presumed.

2014-02-15 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Pablo Piaggio, thank you for testing Trusty. Could you please provide
the full computer model as noted on the sticker?

As well, was there a release newer than 10.04, but older than 12.04 that
did not demonstrate this problem?

** Tags added: trusty

** Description changed:

Unable to set up 2 separate X screens on 12.04 (this works on 10.04).
-
What I did: fresh install of Ubuntu 64bits. Then upgraded. Then try to
- set up 2 separate X screens (2 monitors).
-
- It didn't work on nouveau, nvidia-current, nvidia (post release
- updates), and nvidia-experimental-310.
-
- The behaviour is the same regardless of the driver used:
+ set up 2 separate X screens (2 monitors). It didn't work on nouveau,
+ nvidia-current, nvidia (post release updates), and nvidia-
+ experimental-310.

First the 2nd monitor is complete blank, with an X as a mouse cursor (X
- Windows default?) . This follow the same description follow in this bug:
-
- 'killall nautilus' shows the default background, but no top panel, no
- launcher, and same mouse cursor. Launching any instance of nautilus
- blanks the screen again.
-
- I dug a little further and I found this bug:
-
- running 'DISPLAY=:0.1 compiz --replace' offers a little improvement: top
- panel appears, as the unity launcher. However, no windows decorations
- and all windows open stick to the upper left corner. They can't be
- moved.
-
- After restarting the machine all back to zero.
-
- I went to #ubuntu, but there's no other advice besides install ppas like
- swat and edgers.
-
- I'm willing to provide any other information and make any tests you
- request.
-
- Kind Regards.
