Jean-Sebastien, please stop attacking Boris. We all know how beautiful
his models are and how hard he worked at keeping the forum and contest
running even when things were slow. It is completely understandable
that he got pissed off completely when some individual(s), and I think
that I might even be able to guess who, made deliberate assaults on

Boris, that is true, I have not worked on any personal project for +5

Most of my work is really getting old now (mostly from 2001-2003).
And I look at them today and see where I could have done better.

The flamers on forums tends to be people that complain about everything
and

have never done anything themselves.
Have you noticed that there is never ever any professional working in the

Hope you have some good pictures to show us Boris.

I would really appreciate a constructive comment instead.
Example : The lighting in your 3D scenes is very basic, Models are not
really detailed, Textures are lowres,
Your images look like video game engine from the 90's. Animation is slow
and choppy, we can see polygons.
Or better : your images would look better if done in RS : )

Poor 3D, how could I improve? Better tell me what should I do to
improve.

I did some render test for a client once, and he told me that the image
looked too real.
I had to remove many layers of texture just to get the perfect look.

My website dates from 2001 and the tutorials I made were the first to be
animated on the net at that time.
Now it's common practice.

The thing with forums is that it is not for people that are actually
using

the software.
They are busy. It's for the Pixar or Weta wannabe. Their target is
too

high and they get frustrated quickly.
Alone there are limits you can achieve, in animation you cannot expect to
be

better than Jeff Lew's Killer Bean.
Illustration is done 20% 3D 80% Photoshop.

New comers cannot expect to magically absorb my 21 years of experience
with

3D software.

It's time that 3D software users get Real about their project.
Better have a not perfect project finished than plenty of perfect project
not finished.

All my project like Trapped inside my head and Soleil perdu have a
delicate balance between quality and time allowed to realize them.

Now if you excuse me, I have to go back to my CombadZ coding.
I would really appreciate a review of it by you, but this time with a
little

more comments.

I did not meant to offend you in any way Boris, about forums, it's just
that

I always get flamed on them.

2010-03-31 Thread Jouni Hätinen
Still, after all the whining, Realsoft is easily the best 3D modeling
software for Linux.

Anyway, mocking people for their ability to make nice pictures is not
very intelligent. I participated in the 3DDart's competitions about
2-3 times, and I didn't do very well, but who cares? The competition
was great, but I have to admit I didn't really use the forum at all. I
think this mailing list is enough. If someone wants help and he cannot
get it from here, I bet my 2 cents he will not get it from any forum
either. But what Realsoft could do; they could start a blog about
Realsoft or a fan group in Facebook. That would be very interesting (I
personally don't use Facebook, but I think I'm an exception).

Also I think they should try to expand to volume rendering (voxels),
because that way they could really separate themselves from the other
3D modeling programs for Windows too (coming from a guy who is
interested in volume rendering methods right now). Anyway, I haven't
had the extra money to buy the latest version of RS, but I will
upgrade as soon as I have.

Hey Jouni,

Jouni said: Realsoft is easily the best 3D modeling software for Linux.

Dont forget us people on Windows OR MAC who might not share that opinion :D

On Windows I would have to disagree with you by a long shot. Where
Modelling is concerned apps like MODO and SILO plus add to this ZBRUSH
for afters would be a fair bit ahead of RS now. But then thats my
opinion from having used them. I own all three .. would love more
time with 3D, but with this recession its all hands at the pump and
take any work one can. 3D is not my main business - Web Sites,
Graphics etc is but now its anything to make cash ..

Jouni said: Also I think they should try to expand to volume

Try the new alpha's of Blender 2.5 - as you know its free AND for a
while now has a whole Voxel Setup added for Volume Rendering the likes
of Smoke etc. Lightwave has had Voxels for quiet a while too.

Sorry for the forum, I don't remember it ever existed.
Why would I go there? Ask questions no one will be able to answer.
If someone send me a private e-mail, I will take the time to help him.

I paid for Realsoft, because the features were interesting.
The features are working, I am happy customer.
The features are not working, I contact RS directly and they solve the
problem.

Community is only for chatting about RS, 3D and new techniques.
The software is working, you cannot complain.

You are unable to create your vision in RS, but the software is working,
you cannot complain.

There is a manual + reference and everything is in there.
Anything else can be found on many books about 3D, tutorials and DVD.

For example a perfect skin shader can be found in Renderman Shading books.
You can then recreate them with the VSL.
http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/1598632868/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=485327511pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripepf_rd_t=201pf_rd_i=0201508680pf_rd_m=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQBpf_rd_r=0C7R41SMX7HH1EZWG125

PS : perfect skin shader is worth nothing if the model and lighting is
not perfect : )

A 3D tutorial for maya or blender will work for RS and vice versa.

In the big studios, things are not always working as expected. Software
does not always react as supposed to.
They don't have the time to blame the software, they find a bypass or
another way to do it.

Only the user can be blamed for poor result.
Like I said many times, I could do anything I ever wanted with RS
version 1.0 : RS7 is only bonus.

I feel by reading some users post that they want someone else to do
everything for them.
3D is not a step by step. Find the way to get the shot you want with
your imagination.

RS has the potential to do everything you could ever imagine, maybe not
with a magic button like softimage.

RS attract technical people more than artistic people, maybe this is the
problem.

RS is not responsible to make you create fantastic images, they provide
only the tool.

Now with the incredible Avatar movie, new RS users will pop up with the
dream of doing the same thing.

RS can do an Aatar movie, but with 500 expert cg artists.

Carrara, Bryce and Poser website is full of beautiful images, probably
better than most created with RS.
And yet no professionals are using these softwares. Why other easy
stupid software create better images?
They have a magic button to create beautiful images, but they don't
provide the tools to create YOUR visions.

They are only good at creating beautiful images of a naked woman in a
shiny landscape, nothing else.
