[libreoffice-users] locked in other OS

2012-11-07 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)

When i save a file onto my company's network and then reopen it (still in
Ubuntu) it all works fine.  When my boss opens the file in Windows an
error-message pops-up saying that he can only open a copy or in Read-Only
mode.  It's closed on my machine but his one claims it's still open.  Then my
boss changes the name, edits the document, saves and closes.  Then when i open
the new version of the document it tells me i can only open in Read Only (or a
copy)!

It does have a slight advantage in that it forces my boss to effectively make
backups and i am gradually encouraging a standard versioning system other than
filename-draft.doc
filename-final.doc
filename-FINAL.doc
filename-revised.doc
filename-final.doc
in roughly random order and sometimes without the filename part so folders end
up full of documents that could be about anything.  Draft does not always come
first and may even be the final and revised might be a revised draft or just be
a draft.  Hence frequent shouts of so which one am i supposed to open?.  It's
slow going but at least we seem to make occasional steps forwards.

So, i am not sure i really want to fix the problem but it's one of the excuses
some of my colleagues use to revert to inferior products instead of going with
LO.

I made a 'template' in LO for an A3 leaflet with a background image (page

Everything works fine in LO, and also if exported as PDF.
But when saved as .doc the entire background image is gone.

Any ideas about what happens?
Can't you use background images in Word?

So far the client has to use the pdf ...

The problem is the same as it always has been: a file created by
one program does not always look the same when viewed in another
program. This has been known to happen even in different versions of
Word. PDF was designed to prevent this problem, so I doubt that it is a
matter of the client has to use ... but rather is a good choice.
Specifically, Word uses background images in different way than
LibreOffice. As a test, I opened an .odt file using Abiword which is
suppose to use ODF formats. It had some graphics that Abiword rendered
as small thumbnails. It had a numbered list that covered several
paragraphs. Abiword put them into a single paragraph while wrapping text.

I don't use any touch screen though, hence the new Start screen works just

I'm quite happy with the move to W8 so far :)

With their new touch-optimized OS, and all of their changes to the way

I was reading a set of articles about Windows 8 and the pros and cons of

had to be changed to deal with the formally known as Metro

new environment.

So, has anyone out there tried Windows 8 and LO with it? Desktop

[libreoffice-users] Conditional formatting

2012-11-07 Thread IGraham
Conditional formatting

I have a grid of cells selected (approx 48 X 120) these cells have
Conditional formatting set on them
Enter a letter in any of the cells (say 'r' for red) and that cell will
formate to red - I have 4 different colours
I can set this up no problem and it works ok
But when I reopen the spreadsheet the formatting towards the bottom of the
grid does not work - just shows the inputted letters
If I look at formatting Conditional formatting manage the 'range' has
changed

Think this is a bug as its only started since upgrading to new version -
I've reported it as a bug
I have deleted my user profile and let it recreate but that didn't fix
looks like I'll have to install the previous version
Unless anyone has any ideas how to fix

Hi.
Are lock files left behind in the folder with the files you edit. I
noticed yesterday that after working on a file on the server the lock
file remained after I closed the file I was editing.

Note also that the Background tab of the Page

graphic is linked and not embedded, and there may
be problems when you transfer the file to another

The idea was that they should be able to reuse the front/back background

Earlier this week I used Word for the first time in many years, and I must

The background is gone both when I open the .doc file in LO and when he
opens it in Word.
Which may indicate that it is a problem with the export?
It is not a linked file.
And all the other images export/import just fine from the .doc file. It is
just the full-page-no-margins background image that disappears.
I'll probably be writing on a machine with genuine Word next week, and
then I could do some tests on a USB-stick to see if a background image
added inside Word will import into LO.

There is still problem with export to doc - many times the GFX is lost,
or style/font changed in part of text. The situation in weird because
the Word from M$O 2010 can readwrite in both format and the document
always looks the same.
