I originally tried to do this with proper form controls, but learned there is no way to refer to form field values like variables, is this correct? This is something I would be interested in too, but haven't got around to trying. The only way I know of taking a value from e.g. a list or combobox from a form element and then using that value to display or hide another part of the document would be via macro. So, I resorted to using variables, and now I'm just trying to consult the value of an input list variable, but cannot figure out how to do so. Could anyone help me with this? Can't help you there, unless you are using one of the user variable fields that are accessible in the document's properties. Moreoever, in the sections to be displayed conditionally, if I wish to include variables, those must be hidden sections or hidden paragraphs, but not conditional text, right? From what I understand to be possible, you can make you section conditional on the value of a variable, there's a little tick box for that when you create a new section. However, I've not done it or tried it, so I'm going on the basis of a recent discussion on the French mailing list where a similar question was asked. Re: [libreoffice-users] record changes weakness compared to m$
Hi :) That is the way we do our newsletter at work. I use LO to pull together articles written by various different people using different programs (sadly mostly just different versions of MSO). When we used Word for our newsletter it took ages to sort out all the strange and different messes that people made. With LO it's easy to just paste in as unformatted and then apply suitable styles to keep all the articles consistent with each other. That Alt arrow trick has been a huge help in making this latest one MUCH better but even before that LO was a huge help in getting a superior output more quickly. Then my boss prints a copy and marks changes he wants in biro. I make them and then print another copy for my other boss to make more changes in biro. Then he confers with the 1st boss and then the 1st boss tells me the changes the other one wanted. Track changes could possibly be a lot more efficient imo but only if it works across the LO/MSO divide. Still it's 3 months until i have to worry about it again and that typically means huge improvements in LO. [libreoffice-users] huge print jobs for MS Publisher Imagesetter printer
Hello. I noticed a strange thing in Windows version of Libre Office. When I print to printer that is configured with driver MS Publisher Imagesetter, sometimes print files are really huge. For testing purpose I used Print to file option. For example I attached a 13 kilobyte odt file that turns into 48 megabytes print file. It contains several lines of letters and numbers, and then broken link to image (copied from web browser). If I print this document to another printer (with different driver, for example, HP LaserJet 2050) the size of print jobs is quite reasonable (less than 1 megabyte). Is it normal behavior? Have anyone else noticed that? We met with it when we were trying to understand why printing from Libre Office takes so much time in RDP terminal session. :) (We had files that produced even 250 Mb of print data, of course it took much time to send it to terminal client's printer). Re: [libreoffice-users] huge print jobs for MS Publisher Imagesetter printer
Hi :) I thought it was just me not understanding printers and having set-up ours badly in GnuLinux but i might have had a similar issue with a Ricoh photocopier. My company paid 'an expert' for about 2 hours on 2 separate occasions to set-up the Ricoh for Windows. So, i figured it was just me and our amazing printer. Now that i think about it i haven't tried printing from any other program so it could possibly be partly a LO issue. Which OS are you using btw? I would assume Windows but with the rise of mobile platforms that is never certain these days. [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice no longer works with Windows 1252 encoding ?
Maybe not the right forum ? but is this new encoding behaviour intentional or a issue ? since 3.6.3 LO no longer shows correctly non-standard-ascii characters with text imported from a database using Windows 1252 encoding(during the import), UTF-8 encoding now works fine but gives problems when exporting to PDF. Older an recent files with text imported with a Windows 1252 encoding give problems when exporting to PDF, Some fonts like Futura Sdt (Opentype) has only the Latin 1252 code page and do not shows up when opening in a standard PDF viewer an do not print when using a PDF engine. the Adobe Viewers gives the famous error Can not extract the embedded fond 'FA+FuturaStdMedium' some characters We found this behaviour on Windows XP machines, PDF exported on Windows 7 do not have this problem ? The faulty PDF export is a regression starting from LO 3.6.3 and also present in LO 3.4 beta. ok: Window XP is a ending story, but maybe someone has the same problems with non-Windows machines Greetz Fernand -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

[libreoffice-users] LibreOffice runs on the Raspberry Pi, with the right license

The Raspberry Pi is a little PC which plugs into a TV and a keyboard and can be used for many of the things that most desktop PC can do, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. LibreOffice is the first comprehensive office suite to run on a 40 dollar credit card sized PC, without any compromise on features and performances. LibreOffice has been ported to ARM by multiple contributors from Canonical, Debian and RedHat, and was packaged for the Raspberry Pi by Rene Engelhard as a part of his work as the Debian maintainer for LibreOffice. The availability of LibreOffice, the best free office suite ever, on the Raspberry Pi - the most affordable PC ever, targeted to hardware and software enthusiasts, and schools - is extremely important for The Document Foundation, because it will contribute to the growth of the brand awareness in key market segments, comments Bjoern Michaelsen, a Canonical developer and a deputy member of the Board of Directors of The Document Foundation. I'm very impressed that the LibreOffice team didn't have to make any changes to the code in order for it to compile and smoothly run on Raspberry Pi, said Eben Upton from the Raspberry Pi Foundation. It's also great to have a comprehensive office suite available in the Pi Store at launch, making people even more aware of the potential of this device. LibreOffice is available from the Raspberry Pi Store (http://store.raspberrypi.com/projects/libreoffice), which is described here: http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/2768 (including instructions on how to install it). Raspberry Pi Foundation announcement press release is here: http://blog.indiecity.com/?page_id=2269. UPDATE (December 20, 2012): The license blurb has been fixed, and it now links to the LGPLv3 text. About the Raspberry Pi The Raspberry Pi is a tiny computer, designed to fit in a pocket, and cheap enough to be bought with pocket money. It was developed by the not-for-profit Raspberry Pi Foundation in Cambridge to help children engage with computer programming, and has won dozens of awards in its first year of release. Re: [libreoffice-users] typographic freaks: footnotes not vertically aligned to last line of body text in following page (as in good typographic style)
Hi :) Thanks :) It is this sort of improving co-operation between different products that i really like about OpenSource. Imo It beats having 1 massively bloated program with tons of features that almost no-one ever uses and that ends up with those features creating problems or deteriorating due to changes elsewhere in the program. Just split functionality off into programs (or in some cases just add-ons) that can have a dedicated community that are able to get on with developing things themselves without having to ask people that deal with completely unrelated functionality if they can have permission. Errr, is that something that LaTex or Scribus might be better at? If so can they read and work with the output from LO? TeX, LaTeX, and their family can certainly do footnotes. However, I don't think they are as capable at importing LO/OOo text as Scribus is. Scribus will directly import text from Writer, and preserve styles in the process. You can even map the Writer styles to Scribus styles if you want. Scribus works very well with LO/OOo. However, the current stable version of Scribus (1.41) lacks footnotes and tables, although they are on the roadmap for the next release. As for footnotes, however, Scribus will preserve the superscripts in the text, and will convert the text of the footnotes to endnotes. After importing the text to Scribus you can cut the endnotes off the end of the story and paste in as a new story. The new story can be manually threaded to text frames at the bottom of the appropriate pages. Unless you have a gazillion footnotes, this works very well. -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

In form edit mode of your email subform, click on the form properties button, and then click on the three dots button to the right of the Filter field. This opens a filter dialog, where you can enter a Named Parameter for your filter, e.g. MemberID = :ID If you then save this Filter criteria, you will notice that the Filter field has been filled. If there is not sufficient space for a further line at the bottom of a page, it will be carried over to the next page, possibly leaving a small amount of unused vertical space within the text area of the page. If different pages have different type sizes or different paragraph spacing - or even just a different number of paragraphs - the bases of bottom lines may well not match up. In the case of your example, the spacing and the rule before the footnote and the reduced type size of the footnote itself all add up to mean that there can be no guarantee that the bases of the bottom lines will match up. In order to correct this problem, you need to make small alteration to details of one or other page. It may be that you can remedy things by changing the bottom page margin slightly - but if you do that for the page style of the whole document, you are likely to introduce similar problems on other pages. The simplest solution may be to increase slightly the line spacing on the second page. if making this enhancement is not too hard, it will be a great step toward dtp for LibreOffice It's not clear what you want to happen here. Do you want the line spacing on your second page to be increased slightly so as better to fill the page? Or do you want the space before the footnote to be increased? Or both of these? Or, if (as would be usual) you had more than one paragraph on each page, would you want the paragraph spacing to be adjusted to suit? Or some combination of all these? It's worth mentioning that you are comparing your word processor results with - as you say - the appearance of a professionally produced book. In that case, a quite separate process - layout - is carried out after the text is finalised. This is done is layout software, not in word processing software. Any modifications to the text - even minor ones - after this would potentially upset the appearance, so this is done in the final stages of production. And I doubt whether this is ever completely automated, in fact: rather, I imagine that expert user of layout software makes minor adjustments to achieve the sort of smart appearance that you crave. So you are asking for OpenOffice or LibreOffice to become layout software as well as word processing software. I have no idea whether its developers would wish to do this. I trust this helps. Brian Barker I thought I had seen something about this some time ago either on this mailing list of the A00 mailing list. The topic was Register true. If you do a web search you may find the entire thread. To do this, you must change the Page style for your document. 1. Open the Styles and Formatting window using F11 to do so. 2. At the top of this window, click the Page Style icon. (4th icon from the left). The list of page styles appear. 3. Right click the highlighted page style. (If you are not using a custom page style, this will be Default .) 4. Click the Page style. 5. It is in the Layout settings section (bottom right). 6. Click the box labeled Register-true. 7. Click OK. This is the setting that printers use to make sure the lines of adjacent pages line up. --Dan -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

Re: [libreoffice-users] Libre Office Version 3.6.4.3 (Build ID: 2ef5aff)
Thanks for the reply, Tom. Yes, I have tried all of those and, if I have a database loaded, nothing happens and the only way I can close Libre is to use Windows Task Manager. I have now tested both Writer and Calc with existing files and they both close normally whichever route I use. For information, the database I am using was only created in the previous version of Libre. I wonder if anyone else can reproduce this fault? This may not be much help, but when I have been faced with a converted file that was such a formatting mess, I would just save it as a plain text file and format from scratch, creating and applying the specific Styles I wanted. There are drawbacks to this, as you will lose some of your content, such as footnotes. Good luck. Thanks in advance. Anna What is the default system printer? MS Publisher is part of the MSO office suite and is available in the more expensive versions. I have no idea what the MS Publisher Imagesetter is for unless it is doing something like converting other MSO formats to MS Publisher format much like various Print to PDF converters work. If my guess is correct then I am not surprised that it garbled other file formats. I had a big graphic map of regional railroad lines. I created a high res PDF file to be printed on a plotter at 3 foot by 4 foot. It would not render. I never did get any large format prints from the professional equipment. BUT, I took that same file and printed it out to an inkjet printer and it printed file, thought it took a long time to do the processing the data to be sent via the USB cable to the inkjet. Saying that, it could be the massive amount of data that the Imagesetter needs to do its job, vs. what an HP printer [bw or color] would need. -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

Probably. But you have to sort numerically, so you will either have to separate the numbers from the street names (into separate cells: you can then sort by those cells after sorting by street name) or else keep the cells as they are but extract the number part into a separate cell (which you can hide if you prefer) and then sort by those cells. For one thing, it will often flag an entire paragraph as having changed when only a word or two in the paragraph has changed. - Robert -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
[libreoffice-users] Writer - Export Doc to Bitmap Graphic
Can Writer 3.6.4.3 export a doc to png or jpeg bitmap? It can export PDF and HTML, I know, but we need bitmaps. Print to file makes a PDF for me (Linux). Maybe print-to-file can be jiggered? The only way I know is tedious labor requiring an external app! It should not be so hard: 1. Set Writer's Format/Page/Height as long as possible to erase page breaks. 2. Turn views off for nonprinting chars, table guides, etc. 3. Screen capture one part at a time being careful not to resize the window, just scroll it. 4. Stitch all shots together into one composite graphic in GIMP using careful H-alignment. 5. Save file from GIMP. Thanks for any better ideas. -- http://www.fastmail.fm - Accessible with your email software or over the web -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

[libreoffice-users] Re: Writer - Export Doc to Bitmap Graphic
I am not aware of any word processing program that directly exports to a bitmap file. I am aware of several, but let Writer leapfrog the herd anyway. Every app in the LibreOffice suite should do it, AFAIAC. MS Word does it. If you're using Office 2003 you can print to the Microsoft Document Imaging format (which is basically a TIFF file)... http://channel9.msdn.com/Forums/TechOff/114386-Export-Word-to-gifjpg/77db1ee48586425693d69dea012b3324 A top-end math editor does it. http://reference.wolfram.com/mathematica/ref/Rasterize.html The general need is all over the web. I just watched two YouTube vids on the tedious way I have used. https://startpage.com/do/search?q=export+Word+to+bitmap The step to bitmap is trivial compared to all other exports. Rendering is done already for print and screen. Emit instead of inkjet dots, or screen dots, bitmap file dots. Print to postscript may already work via third-party printer drivers. Then ImageMagick or GraphicsMagick can convert to PNG. That plan is my fallback. I only thought I'd ask before going that route. Tip, encourage positive feedback thusly: Hey great idea there! Stuff that nobody else does is called innovation.
