Yes, that is the problem. I always have to click that icon to get full
screen but LO's idea of full screen is about 3/4 of the width of my
screen. There is also a system shortcut, F5, which is supposed to give
full screen and that is more reliable than the little icon top right
in the LO window.

The ^ works fine for me, covering the entire screen, other than the task
bar at the bottom.  F5 does nothing.  I suspect there's a problem with
the way your system handles ^.

I suspect there is interference with the margin settings in the system
workspace settings. I'll have another look but I was hoping there would be some
way to 'force' LO to use full width regardless. Firefox always remembers.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Logic of headers (and footers) or my lack of it!

2020-06-01 Thread Regina Henschel

Hi Harvey,

Harvey Nimmo schrieb am 31-May-20 um 21:16:

Hello Regina,

Thanks for taking the trouble to offer help.

Perhaps if I describe my 'case' it will help to see where I am coming
from. I wanted to define a header for each page that is either a
copy of the previous header or a new one.

The application in my current case is collection of handwritten court
papers (from 1813) that I want to transcribe. The originals are in
jpeg. Some are just single sheets, some sheets are left and right pages
together, some are just snippets. Obviously the order is
important, and the source names of the jpeg files serve very well as a
header that should not of itself belong the the transcription text.
hence my simple requirement.

It was a deliberate choice to try to use the header feature (rather
than headings within the body of the text) because it made sense to me
to keep the metadata (i.e. file names of each sheet) separate from the
actual content of each sheet. In the end, I would have a complete LO
text document in which each page was headed with the file name to
identify its source and a page full of text showing the textual content
of each sheet. The resulting document would evidently contain 29 pages
with about 20 different headers.

I would go with true headings of style 'Heading 1' or other styles with
outline level 1.

Start each transcribing of a document on a new page and put the heading
as very first paragraph on that page.

Then you can add a field to the header. It will show this heading until
it comes to a new page with a different heading. That way you only need
one page style for all.
To get the needed field open the Fields dialog by Ctrl+F2. In tab
"Document" select item "Chapter". You likely need format "Chapter name".

If you do not like having a file name as heading, you can fake hiding
it. Set the font size to 2pt and the font color to white.

Using true headings has the advantage, that you can generate a table of
contents and you can generate a tagged PDF.

To get "Table of contents" in the header, set the outline level of style
"Contents Headings" to "Level 1" and make sure, that the table of
contents starts on a new page.

From content, I would not use a file name, but would use a short text,
that describes the source. I like the idea from Drew to insert a caption
to each image. Such caption would be a good place for the reference to
the source of the image and - as Drew mentioned - allows to generate a
"Table of Figures". Here you would need to set style "Figure Index
Heading" to outline level "Level 1" to get the correct text into the header.

Kind regards
Regina

margins,” the printed comments’ dashed lines are too faint and thin to read
easily.

I can’t find a way to increase the thickness of the dashed lines to make
them more legible. I’ve tried adjusting the font size within the comments,
but the dashed line thickness remains fixed.

I’m printing with a black-and-white only laser printer. The grayscale of the
printed dashed lines varies according to the color of the comment. So, I can
darken them a little by cycling through the colors and picking a darker one.
That helps readability somewhat, but the dashed comment lines are still too
thin.

I have to cycle through the colors using a clumsy trick detailed in various
places, for example: https://askubuntu.com/questions/60116...

Is there an easier way to select a comments background color in the newest
version of LO?

I’m running LO Version: 6.4.3.2 (x64), on Win 10.

Ah, I suspected it might be so. I assume I should remove the version
I've got and start again? I'll make sure it's removed, then look for
the correct version in the morning.

Thanks for all the help, folks.

I know things can change, but I used a local Libre Office installation

have set it up. Since the new laptop was necessitated by a hard drive

Sure - my bad description. Along with the attachment reporting lack of
Java, I attached an overview of what I can currently see. It looks fine
- just as I'd expect, but when I try to open the Display view, most used
as it contains description and images, I get the no-java report.

OK - Windows 10 v.1909 64-bit. Java is Oracle 8, v.251 - I think on the
old laptop I had openjava. It is installed at C:\Program Files
(x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_251\. Is this in fact a 32-bit version? I know LO
says I must have a 64-bit version.

Anything else that would help?

Thanks

[libreoffice-users] how to get LO to open document at full screen width

2020-06-01 Thread Philip Jackson

I'm using LO 6.3.5.2 in UbuntuSTudio 1804

My Calc and Writer documents always open at a size which fills about 3/4 of my
16:9 format screen. I inevitably have to resize them to full width (especially
the Calc sheets). LO doesn't seem to be able to remember what size they were
when closed after previous editing.

I have searched for a way to force them to open at full screen width but with
no success. Is there some setting(s) buried somewhere in the 'advanced'
settings which can be arranged to force full width opening?

Philip

[libreoffice-users] Base cannot find java on my new laptop

2020-06-01 Thread Anne Wilson
I keep a database of magazine articles, with the file saved on my server
which is accessed by a drive mapping (Y:). I installed java runtime and
checked the version. However when I try to run Base I see the page that
lists tables, forms, reports etc., but can't open any of those links.
Every time it tells me that it is unable to connect, since it can't find
java. (See attachment)

Please can someone point me towards finding what is causing this? Thanks.
