I apologize. That is a different setting that has nothing to do with
your question. The relevant options is:

menu View > "Column/Row Highlighting"

In newer versions of LO Calc, you can go to menu View > "Hidden
Row/Column Indicator". This setting highlights the complete Row and
the complete Column of the cell that has the focus (aka active cell).

As for the _selected_ cells, when I actually select a range of cells I
already see them highlighted, so I am not sure what else would you
need, or what might be different in your system.

Do you mean that the selected cell should change colour only for the 
time during which it is selected?

  Is there a way to change the colour of the selected cell in calc to
