[libreoffice-users] Question about document paths

2023-08-02 Thread Brooks, Bruce
I have recently purchased a new computer with the latest and greatest
Windows 11 operating system. My old computer ran windows 11 and the
LibreOffice path was C:\Users\Bruce's
Lenovo5\OneDrive\Documents\Joanne\Goals for reading the bible.odt does
not exist. The directory that it points to is basically up through
C:\Users\Bruce's Lenovo5\OneDrive\Documents.

With the new system it is "Bruce - Personal\Documents". All my files and
folders are there but; LibreOffice can't find them. When I double click
the file in folders it will open in LibreOffice and will save back
correctly. The next time the file can't be found.

How do I fix this? I tried to do the file path edit but that didn't seem
to work.

Thanks,
Bruce Brooks

[libreoffice-users] Master Document Chapters Auto-numbering

2016-10-16 Thread Julian Brooks
HI again,

I have a couple of questions regarding auto-numbering.

Apologies in advance if this has already been answered - I've spent umpteen
hours attempting to sort this over several days on and off, pouring through
documentation and the archives.

Two questions:

1. My Master Documents chapters numbering always starts from 1 - how can
this run concurrently for chapter1, chapter 2 etc etc.?

2. My introductory chapter has several subheadings, with the proviso of the
above, how can I auto-number my introductions subheadings (0.1, 0.1.1 etc.)?

Cheers,

Julian

Re: [libreoffice-users] Multiple Page Margins in Template for Large Document (ToC)

2016-10-15 Thread Julian Brooks
Thanks Virgil, look forward to reading the doc.

After some more investigation I think much of my woe stemmed from having
the 'no manual editing' tickbox selected in the ToC (the ol' user-error
issue eh:).

Still having some issues with appendices though, so appreciate your
assistance.

Hi Ricardo,

Hope you're well.

That doesn't seem to do it.

What seems to have worked is editing Styles & Formatting's Organiser.

Let's hope it's not the quick hack I fear it may be, with consequences down
the line:)

[libreoffice-users] Multiple Page Margins in Template for Large Document (ToC)

2016-10-15 Thread Julian Brooks
Hi all,

With a huge nod of appreciation to Virgil, I've managed to start building a
thesis template. This I'll push to the list when done.

I have another question though:

In my large Master doc I've now got margins for the text chapters that I
really like. Unfortunately this really doesn't look good for the ToC, which
is now way too squished (there's also a couple of the appendices that are
now borked).

How can I edit certain pages so they can have minimal margins. Something
like the title page but can't use the title page as that ruins the page
numbering.

Also is there weird rules with it being the ToC? I don't want to finalise
the ToC (ie make a copy) as it's still in flux.

So change the page margins whilst keeping the flexibility that makes the
ToC so good in the first place? Then I'll move onto the appendices:)

Regards to all,

Julian

Hi Paul,

No I wasn't aware of MuseScore, thanks for the tip.

The score examples aren't PDF's they are PNG's, though I must say they
aren't as sharp looking as I would prefer.

LOSA looks great, more stuff to wrap my head around:)

Yep, Lilypond is 'the one'.

Most of my scores are 'text scores, so have a quite particular layout - I
utilise .txt for text scores too (seems appropriate) so pnd's simplifies
greatly layout issues.

Hi Virgil,

Very interesting info, and the tech details are just what I'm after.

Always wondered what the G in Libertine stood for. Like the different font
for headings and text body too (currently have just the one font). Agree
about underlining and minimal use of italics (is that what you mean
though?).

I'm in Debian rather than Windows.

(apologies, meant to send to list too, below)

Hi Jonathon,

Thanks for the link.

Perhaps I should have stated earlier that this is a music composition
thesis.
So the thesis is the scores, recordings, and documentation.
I guess as such, I'm a specialist in one field, and quite pedantic about
layout of scores, quality of recordings and documentation.
It's that I'd like the commentaries presentation to be 'just so' also. :)

Appreciate your comment, thank you

2016-10-11 Thread Julian Brooks
Dammit Tom,

That it is *too* good advice.

Ok, I'll slunk off and actually get back to work:) Nice take though.

Chance is good but this thesis is very much deterministic.
I guess it's from the endless books I've been neck-deep in for so long -
some of them are beautiful to look at - I'd like some of that please.

I guess then the answer is 'go and pay a pro then'.

Ok, thanks

Apologies for the noise,

Julian

[libreoffice-users] Template Changer

2016-10-11 Thread Julian Brooks
Hello again,

Hope this isn't seen as too cheeky...

Does anyone have any templates they'd be willing to share as examples of
decent contemporary layout (for my particular usage, it's a thesis)?

Mines just, well, boring tbh (not far off the LO standard layout, which,
though fine, is just that - somewhat dull and functional.

I don't mean something crazy and snazzy, just a proper solid contemporary
layout by someone who's into graphic design, typography and such stuff,
with a keen eye.

Or, does anyone have any links to, or pointers for, a good place to look
that not only provides examples but clear instructions on spacings,
heights, etc.?

Font-wise, I've been making use of Linux Libertine for many years but even
that seems a bit staid these days (if ethically sound:).

S'cuse the ennui,

Julian

[libreoffice-users] Master Document: Insert pages into ToC without visible Headers

2016-10-11 Thread Julian Brooks
Hi all,

In my Master Document I have a couple of Appendices.
One of the appendices is a bunch of scores, rendered as 'png's.
These scores take up the whole page, and I don't want them to have headers
(all the info is already on the score/png.

I would like these scores/png's to have titles and page numbers in the ToC
- how can I do this please?

Many thanks in advance,

Julian

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Paragraph Style: Heading. Master Doc Inserting Unwanted Page Break Between Title on Two Lines

2016-09-26 Thread Julian Brooks
Hi Wiebe,

Many thanks for Template Changer - I hadn't come across that before, will
investigate further.

Apologies to all that I am not clearly explaining myself.

This is not an issue with transferring from from sub-doc to master, it's
the same on both if I mirror the sub-doc settings to the master.

1. I do want to have an auto page break for each chapter.

The chapter headings are laid out so that there are two lines of heading:

CHAPTER N
This Is What Happens in Chapter N

textbodytextbodyetcetc

So somewhat logically LO inserts a page break thus:

"...pagebreak...
CHAPTER N
...pagebreak...
This Is What Happens in Chapter N

textbodytextbodyetcetc."

What I was looking for was a([n] easy) method to tell LO to not insert page
break between headings when they're next to each other.

Thinking aloud I guess the solution may be to setup another heading with
identical settings except page break off - presumably that'd do it right?

HI Philip,

I've been exploring using master-doc as my 200 page thesis was becoming
unmanageable as a single (writer) doc. I've found navigation across the doc
much easier since breaking it up into 60 or so separate docs, things like
the ToC is great, and it's nice to know the layout is consistent of the
whole doc, particularly as I've writing the bugger for about 6 years now!
Of course some of this may well be more growing familiarity with the
program. A big recent change has been in the update via the Debian repo's,
5.2.1.2 is much more stable. The devs seem to also have solved some of the
issues that were causing the gui to be painfully slow - particularly with
opening drop-down menus.

Ricardo,

Appreciate you weighing in again. Conceptually I think I've solved the
issue but if not I'll upload an example somewhere/somehow:)

Cheers guys, positive community experience so far,

Julian

[libreoffice-users] Re: Paragraph Style: Heading. Master Doc Inserting Unwanted Page Break Between Title on Two Lines

2016-09-25 Thread Brooks
Hi Ricardo,

Many thanks for the prompt response...

I guess part of the problem is that I do want to have an automatic page
break before each chapter, so yes, page break is on in the text flow tab in
the master document.

As a quick workaround I can just insert whitespace, so the chapter title is
on one line but appears to be below it on the page - it looks wrong though
(like the hack it is:).

Hmm

[libreoffice-users] Paragraph Style: Heading. Master Doc Inserting Unwanted Page Break Between Title on Two Lines

2016-09-25 Thread Brooks
Hello (world - 1st post. Many more to come I feel:)

I'm formatting a master document.

My chapter headings are like this:
"CHAPTER 1
Blah Blah Blah

textbody_textbody_etc_etc"

When I update the master doc LO inserts a page break between the 2 headings
on separate lines, so:
"CHAPTER 1"
.page break
"Blah Blah Blah

textbody_textbody_etc_etc"

If I manually delete the page break, when I update the master doc it gets
re-inserted.

So, dear community - how do I fix this please?

Cheers,

Brooks
