The buttons are impossible to see unless highlighted and all search bars

even tried manually setting all colours in the Application Colours and
nothing has changed at all.

Change your system theme to something with light colours.

I see two possibilities for your experience:
* Your Windows version of LibO is from TDF, but your Linux version is
from a distro. Distro creators have a nasty habit of damaging the
software they include in their distro.
* Either the monitors or the video outputs for either your Windows box
or Linux box are not correctly calibrated.

My recommendation would be to create your own colour palettes, tailored
for your specific use-case. Whenever you update/install LibO, copy your
custom palettes over the default stuff.

Checkbox 1: Convert to Metric (Centigrade, km/h, m, kg, l)
Checkbox 2: Thousands separation of large numbers
Checkbox 3: Convert to non-metric (F, mph, ft, lb, gal)

The entire menu item "English Sentence Checking" is not in LibreOffice

Also missing from 6.4.0.3 is Lightproof Grammar checker for English.
(I'll grant that Language Tool is much better option than LightProof

That is a different function. That affects layout structure. The

I've attached a screenshot to show the page in the options menu that I'm

I never found the standard reveal codes useful. Much simpler to simply

Whether or not it does that, depends upon the paragraph, character, and
frame styles that were last used. If the last frame has migrated off the
last page, then deleting whitespace surrounding the frame will usually
delete the last blank page. However, this deletion process can be tricky.

Your use-case is not unusual. The fix is not well described in the
documentation.

Either the Shadowbroker's dump, or the one of their competitor across
the street contained an email delivery system targetting Linux. The dump
of one of their competitors had a delivery system targetting BSD.

As such, the only safe assumption is that there are both delivery
systems, and malware targetting every OS out there.

When you write the caption, go to the bottom of the box, and change

If you're feeling very brave, and don't mind destroying your LibO

It doesn't matter if concat or concatentate is the correct command to
use. Neither concat(a20:a200) nor concatentate(a20:a200) return the
expected the result. Both return the value in a20.

Prior to LibO 6.2.2, (a20:a200) would return a single string, containing
the contents all the cells between a20 & a200, inclusive.

###

The only work around I've found is to create half a dozen cells,
concatenating 30 cells each,then concatenating them, and then
concatenating them, if needed.

Copyright law, and licensing rules come into play here.

That literally depends upon what the terms of the license that the font
is sold/leased under state.

Commercial foundries typically have licensing for:
* Desktop use only;
* Document embedding only;
* Internal document use only;
* External document use only;
* Intra-web use only;
* World Wide Web use only;
* ePub use only;
* PDF use only;

Use the font for a purpose for which one does not have a license, and
you face a lawsuit that at best, you lose.

> I just think that y'all are too lazy to incorporate embedding into your

Font licenses are so tricky, that if you don't have a lawyer explain
just what your license allows, you will violate the license. No ifs,
ands, or buts.

I am not a lawyer. This is not legal advice.

Standard deviation formula is  StDev(Slant.B38:Slant.Slant.B1038))
That formula works.

The obvious solution, as expressed in the formula
COUNTIF(Slant.B38:Slant.B1038,>IQ_Slant.B44) does not work.
Error # 510: Missing Variable.

Using quotation marks for the criteria to search by (">IQ_Slant.B44")
does not work.

Is there a way to count the number of cells whose value is greater than

Assuming that is a typo for LibO 5.3.5, then that would be the more
stable, and bug free version.

If you don't like surprises, then stick with the "still" version, and
only install when the third digit is "3", or higher. IE: 5.3.3, 5.4.3,
6.0.3, etc.

If you can tolerate surprises, but want reasonable stability, then stick
with the fresh version, upgrading only when the third digit is "1", or
higher.  IE: 5.4.1, 6.0.1, etc,

If you can tolerate surprises, and don't mind being in the herd, then
install "fresh", when the third digit is "0". IE: 5.4.0, 6.0.0, etc.

If you like living on the bleeding edge, download the nightly builds.
This is only recommended for those who can afford the time it takes to
completely wipe, and the reformat their hard drive, and re-install
everything, because something in the nightly build screwed everything on
their system up.

Give me a week or so to play with it.
I'll probably expand it to include most, if not all writing systems
included in Unicode 9.0:

#

On second thoughts, it might be easier to rewrite this script in Python,
and add a procedure that inspects each glyph.

* ISO 15924 for writing system codes: Both alpha and numeric codes;
* ISO 639-3 for language codes;
* ISO 3166 for country codes;

Create, and use an SQLite database, with one table for each of the
following:
* Writing systems that are officially implemented in Unicode;
* Writing systems that are unofficially implemented in the Private Plane
Area;
* Language or languages associated with each writing system;
* Glyphs that are associated with each writing system;
* Glyphs that are associated with each language;

By using a database, modifications due to Unicode updates is trivial ---
add the new information to the database.

Use language specific character styles, and language specific paragraph
styles. Hebrew only, English only. You can't mix English and Hebrew in
the same style. Things will get messed up.

I usually use a different colour, for each paragraph style, and each
character style,. Then, when the document is completed, proof-read,
copy-edited, grammar checked, etc., change the style colours to black.

To avoid the misplaced punctuation issue, don't use the non-dominant
language at either the beginning, or end of the sentence. Ideally, it
won't be the first, or last word, in the correctly punctuated phrase.

That pretty much mandates that one have a bookkeeping system.

 That said, I still need to build a produce invoices and track when

Since your accountant told you to never touch a book keeping system
again, that gets a little tricky.

 I'm hoping for something that lets me stay in the libreoffice ecosystem.

To track income, a possible solution is a write document, that is
changed according to function.
I've attached an example to this email.

File Properties Custom Properties is where to go to change most of
the information in the document.

* Replace Invoice with Pro-Forma Invoice, Quote, Receipt,
Estimate, Statement or other appropriate

* The item, and the price are changed in properties.
# Use your standard price, for the pricing.
# Change description in the pricing block, when you change the item.
# Change quantity in the pricing block, for the specific client;

There are three lines for discounts:
* Two are for deducting specific dollar amounts;
* One is for deducting a specific percentage;

Then, if the correct tax rate is in the description field, it
automatically calculates the appropriate tax, if the correct amount is
listed in the description field. (The accompanying template is wrong.
Tax is not 97.5%, but 0.975%. ).
Tracking number is for SH, if needed.

Then you have a line for any deposit / down payment that was made/were
made. Put this amount is the item column.
The next line is how much was previously paid. This excludes any
deposit/down payment that was made. This also excludes any payments made
today. (There is no easy way to ensure that no errors are inadvertently
made here. For some reason, that cell doesn't automatically add numbers
together.)

The next line is how much was paid today. Put this item in the item
column. Under quantity put how it was made. cash, cheque, credit card,
debit card, something else.

The final line is how much is still owing.

When everything is correct
* Save the document with the client's name, form-type, and date of the
original request, or invoice number;
* Export the document as a PDF, then email the PDF to your client, and
to your bookkeeping email account. (The bookkeeping email account is an
email account whose sole function is to store PDFs until you, your
bookkeeper, or your accountant can go through them, and do the correct
accounting procedure with them.

Some caveats about using this:
* The forms have to be correctly labelled as to what they are;
* You have to use the same document, for everything from initial
estimate to final receipt;
* Previous payments have to be double checked, to ensure that the
numbers are correct;

To track outgo, the simple solution is:
* Cash is completely prohibited;
* Use a debit card for all purchases --- this includes rent, utilities,
taxes, and everything else under the sun that your business uses;
* Request both a paper and digital receipt for all purchases;
* In a spreadsheet, One
@ One page is for outgo:
# use one row per purchase:
# Columns are for: record #, date, time, place, card present/not
present, vendor, vendor address, item purchased, cost of purchase;
* lease payments are included in this sheet;
* Payments on outstanding debt is included on this sheet;
* Either you or your accountant or your book keeper needs to reconcile
that spreadsheet with your bank withdrawals at least once a week;

Sorry, i don't have a template that i can share, of the spreadsheet.

found it, nor who made the template I modelled mine after.

Took some examination of the fonts I had, to figure out what was happening.

One day, when I was feeling extremely venturous, I looked, to no avail,
through the source code, trying to determine where it looked for the
writing system.

 That's why I wanted to confirm that LO ignored its own precedence on Linux
 systems.

FWIW, On extremely rare occasions, it does the same thing. I think it
might be related to glyphs in the private part of Unicode.

 If that's the case, it's another path for inconsistencies in documents
to appear.

+1

 Well, I sort of agree, but my opinion is that you have to have a good set
 of formatting primitives (can't think of a better word for this) before you
 can build styles --- Styles in that view being a way to insure consistent
 use of an identical grouping of primitives.

+1

Also need to add a couple of more formatting primitives. (Rotate base
line 90 degrees, Rotate base line 270 degrees, Rotate base line 180
degrees, Boustrophedon, Reverse Boustrophedon. I've forgotten the rest.)

But my working assumption is that issues with writing systems will be
fixed real soon now.

 Re: You can not get away with setting English, Arabic, and Korean in the
 same style ... etc.
 -- You're right, you can't RIGHT NOW. But I think we should redesign the
 interfaces to make that more transparent). We both know it CAN BE DONE
 although we accomplish it with different hacks

First thing that is needed, is for LibO to provide an indication that
the glyph is not found in the font used by the style, and a substitute
is being used.

Just realized that that could be done as an extension. It would need to
check the list, character, paragraph, and cell files.
The same issues crop up in multilingual spreadsheets, as in multilingual
text.
I don't know if it is an issue when using Base.
Using Draw to create text documents has its own set of problems.
(Text documents using Reverse Boustrophedon writing systems can only be
created by using Draw.
It is a toss up whether Write or Draw produces better looking text
documents, for Boustrophedon writing systems. Either way, they are
painful to create.)

 it's just that I think we shouldn't need to go through that.

Because of the way the LibO code is written, language has to be declared
in the style. Basically, this is so that grammar checking,
spell-checking and related functions work as expected.

For styles to consistently work as expected, I think that they have to
be writing system dependent. At a minimum, that helps with the missing
glyphs from the font issue.

 On the other hand, if we use a free Google font such as Droid Sans (which has
 no foundry property), we get into trouble.

The scenario you describe is precisely why I have said since at least
2001, that the only way to ensure that the glyphs are right, is to use
language specific styles. You can not get away with setting English,
Arabic, and Korean in the same style, and have things show up correctly.
That works if, and only if one uses a pan-Unicode font for all three
languages and writing systems.
If you want Arabic to display properly, then all three fonts in the
style have to be the Arabic font. If you want Korean to display
properly, then all three have to be set to the same font.
This applies regardless of language writing system combination you are

 return the first font in which it locates the requested language.

The order of precedence is Writing System, then specific glyphs, with a
slight preference for the precomposed glyph, even if you originally did
not use a precomposed glyph.

FWIW, you need to turn both CJKV CTL on, regardless of what writing

letter constructions require both CTL CJKV features.)

 Character styles were really not meant for this – that’s what selecting a
 font is supposed to do.

Character styles fill in the holes that paragraph styles create.
Also useful for one or two words in a different language, or the same

 Has anyone given much thought to permitting finer-grained control of CTL font

IMNSHO, the optimal solution would be to have styles be both language
and writing system dependent.

– e.g. making the CTL font substitutions page similar to
 the Options | LibreOffice | Fonts page used for general font substitution of
 missing fonts.
In other words, permitting multiple fonts to have substitutions defined?

The bad workaround is to create a set of character styles, that have
the correct font for each set of glyph(s), and then write a macro that
basically changes each glyph in the document to that of the character
style for the glyph.

 I apologize if this sounds like a rant; it's not intended to be

The upside of those proof of concept items, is that the user had to
deliberately click on something, for the payload to be delivered.

However, several years ago there was an article in a language related to
French, that implied that at least one malware attack vector using ODF
file formats was in the wild. (This article was several years after the
French ministry of Defence discussed security flaws in OOo, and was
referring to then-current events.)

One of the Snowdon Papers implied that OOo security flaws were being
exploited, but it gave no details about what, where, or how it was being
done.

That said, if one works in area where spear-phishing is a daily yawn,
the security model offered by OOo, and its derivatives, is harder to
breach than that offered by MSO.

With thirteen months from feature freeze, to EOL, an organization

 When will LibreOffice have 100% MS macro and function support?

Given that LibO currently has support for half a dozen programming
languages that can be used to write extensions, I doubt it will ever be
implemented.

_IF_ good coding practices were adhered to, when the macro was written,
and updated, then rewriting them in a language that LibO supports is
trivial.

OTOH, assuming the code is like 99.% of the code found in MSO
macros, it not only is undocumented, but a mess of spaghetti, of the
type that Richard Conway condemned back in 1978.

In the latter instance, the only migration path is to start with the
requirements, as _currently_ used, and go from there.

Since I don't do windows ^1, I can't confirm the statement in the
original article that MSO ships with Macros disabled by default.

If that is the case, then changing the defaults in LibO/AOo/EO/NO/etc
won't make a difference, because the user will enable the macro to run,
if only for the specific document.

Tom Davis wrote:

So we tend to find the LO and AOO simply don't have as many
vulnerabilities and problems.

Because LibO, AOo, EO run on various platforms, I suspect that, as a
malware vector, they are less vulnerable than MSO on Windows.

By way of example, I can't use JabBib on my laptop, because the version
in the official distro repository is incompatible with the specific
setup of my laptop. There are two or three other programs I'd like to
install, but have similar issues. If I had the drive space, I could
install the tool chain required to compile the programs from source code.

The apparent increase is insecurity that support for the number of macro
languages that LibO AOo brings, is nullified by the macro writer not
knowing what components of that language are available on the target
machine.

 It's difficult for anyone to find any flaws that can be exploited by
writing some nasty macro.

At least one proof of concept nasty macro was publicly released for
OOo. I've seen a couple of posts, and articles, that imply that there
are some OOo/LibO/AOo ^2 specific macros in the wild, but nothing that
can be confirmed.

###

^1: The last time I used MSO on Windows, it took 90 seconds from
starting MSO to seeing the Blue Screen of Death. That was with the then
current version of MSO on Windows 7.

^2 I don't recall any mention of EuroOffice, NeoOffice, or Android
OpenOffice in those articles:
* NeoOffice, running exclusively on Mac OS X, can easily accommodate
malware that relies on the standard Mac OS X configuration;
* Android OpenOffice can easily accommodate malware that targets the
Android Operating System;

Either way, I don't see that as a viable option for LibO support.

###

What I think is needed, though I am not sure how to implement it, is:
# Supplementary Documentation:
* PDFs that contain solutions to specific, frequently encountered issues;
* PDFs that are Basic user guides.
The Documentation Team currently provides this type of documentation.

# Core Documentation:
* A comprehensive wiki that covers every detail of every aspect of LibO,
in excruciating detail.
@ There is a page that documents what each line in the source code does;
@ There is a page that explains why each variable in the source code is
used;
@ There is a page that explains what each function in the source code is
supposed to do;
@ There is a page that addresses each bug filed in bugzilla;
@ There is a page that provides an answer for each question posted to
the AOo, LibO, and OOo mailing lists;
@ There is a page for each question posted to FaceBook, Twitter, Google
+, etc;
@ Each article contains between 2,000 and 5,000 words;
@ Each article has pointers to articles that cover specific items within
the article, in greater depth;
@ Each article has pointers to articles for which this article is of
greater depth. Reverse-pointers, if you will.
* A set of PDFs that contain the same data as the wiki, but compiled as
if it is a book on the general (specific) topic;

This is the hard set to write. In theory, the current documentation team
could do it, but it lacks the person-power to do so.
The end result is at least 10^8 pages in English, with an equivalent
number for every language that LibO supports.

As a practical matter, everything in the supplementary documentation
should also be in the core documentation. The major difference being
that the the supplementary documentation is independently written, and,
if appropriate, that content is ported to the wiki, rather than from the
wiki. The secondary content is original, constructed with minimal
referencing of the wiki.

Install both the EU and AnOO packages.

I want to be able to just take my tablet along, instead of my laptop,
to certain meetings and gatherings. So that will require a WORKING text
editing package that hopefully will read/write the ODT file format and
maybe the spreadsheet format as well.

The best ODF editing package on the market does not meet your
requirements.

Root your tablet, install Debian Wheezy, and you have a fighting chance
of running an ODF editing package that meets your requirements.

If you aren't willing to root your tablet then it is a tossup between
EuroOffice, and AndroOpenOffice.

I've got both installed. Both programs have their virtues. Both have
their vices.
* Navigation is easier with AnOO than EU
* AnOO opens more files than EU;
* EO crashes less than AnOO;
* They are both equal opportunity presentation markup destroyers;
* EU is more secure than AnOO;

If all you are doing is taking notes, use TextWarrior, or another text
editor. It is much easier to reformat those notes in LibO, than fixing
the mess that both EO and AnOO make of documents.

###

The current version of WPS Mobile Office FKA Kingsoft Office does _NOT_
support ODF file formats.

For the second file, use the regex that you were using.

This is for either OOo 1.1.x, or OOo 2.x.

1.289106802e+12384 potential passwords to check.

Worst case scenario is 2.452638512e+12378 years, at one password per second.
Theoretically, it will be obtained within 1.25e+12378 years.

The required time will decrease, as the number of passwords checked per

Using a currently available brute force decryption macro for OOo, it
will take 2.554831784e+12375 years for the worst case scenario, and
roughly 1.225e+12375 years in the average scenario.

If the number of glyphs is restricted to 128, and the password length is
restricted to 8 characters, then your worst case scenario is
5.238909443e+16 potential passwords, which can be decrypted in
1.038279554e+8 years (worst case scenario) or 5.191397771e+7 years, in

The Crypto++ library contains routines for encrypting/decrypting

In 2001, four or five firms, worldwide, offered commercial OOo password

One of the firms frankly admitted that they used brute force. The setup

covered the utility bills that the attack generated. FWIW, this firm

Once upon a time, there was an extension that did password recovery. I

There are a couple of commercially distributed tools that _might_ work.

The time required to brute force a solution can be reduced if:
* The length of the password is known;
* Part of the password is known;
* Which glyphs the password uses are known;

This issue comes up often enough, that I'm surprised I can't find an
open source tool to brute force ODF passwords. It is a straightforward
algorithm.

to have, and in some cases really did change.

The primary change is our building together more detailed information
about properties that we had in the past and do it more accurately.

I don't know what country you are in.

Several decades ago, I had the experience of being tasked with finding
the current, legal boundaries of some property the company I worked for
wanted to foreclose on. The boundary line, according to the title deed
was Westward from Mama's grave to the three elm trees. John's property
begins at the first tree. Jane's property begins at the third tree.
Needless to say, no survey map, or government database said where Mama's
grave was. Equally helpful was the lack of elm trees on any of the
properties in question.

I can imagine the issues a Title company would have, to prove to a
hostile jury that the property being foreclosed upon, and the property
described in the title deed are the same property.

Instead of foreclosing on the property, we sold that mortgage to a sucker.

 I think they're also changing legal requirements on titles with
regards to title searches and their validity. Fortunately, those changes
are very very slow.

Doesn't matter how slow they are. When implemented, the relevant data
has to be added to every parcel, and sub-parcel.

(Here's looking at a parcel of land that the Attorney General of the
State of Arizona, and the Attorney General of the State of Utah told a
judge that he has had ten years to determine who originally owned what,
and where it was located, and that that should be enough time to
determine who owned what, and where it was located, and when they owned
it, and he needs to finish that job yesterday.(In all fairness to the
judge, before that property fell into the courts, the organization that
claimed to own it, probably did own it, even if there are no official
records to show how they acquired it, or when they acquired it, or what
they acquired.))

 I know enough about their world there to consider walking away from
this contract because of the internal bickering.
I probably just described the best reason for walking away. :-)

Or the best reason to add a couple of more zeros just to the left of the
decimal point.

I was trying to close out the matrix and see if I could use beast to
replace the report and data entry tools now lost to Informix.

Using Base and MongoDB as an Informix clone will require writing, and
supporting several extensions for Base.

 I really do wish I SQL would go the way of COBOL.

Intrinsically, there is nothing wrong with either COBOL or SQL.
The problem is that people who use those tools tend to suffer from the
computing equivalent of extreme monolingualism, thereby demonstrating
the validity of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis.

existed in 1.1.2.
(I'm not talking only about things like the functionality in OOo 1.1.3-ZA that
was not present in any other version of OOo 1.1.x. )

Now wondering if that game has been removed from LibO.
I've forgotten how it was accessed. :(

Regardless of the outcome of that discussion, *there is a potential HUGE
conflict of interest looming on the horizon in the form of creating bugs so
that outside companies can charge $$$ to fix them. *

As a potential issue, it exists only as long as organizations and individuals
are mislead about FLOSS.
The biggest misconception being that FLOSS is gratis.

QUESTION:
Does there exist a set of LibreOffice TEST documents that are designed to test
ALL OF THE FUNCTIONALITY of a given version of LibreOffice?

No.

Specifically, one that can automate test, perhaps through macros or self
contained programs, all the functionality of Libreoffice?

Theoretically that can be automated, but due to a11y issues with LibO, it is
not currently possible to do so.

SUGGESTION #3: If such a set of documents or test harness does NOT EXIST.
Perhaps the QA team could itemize all the functionality of a version of
Libreoffice and structure a project for contribution by end users to
contribute the tests.
i.e: A test suite that each user could download and then run and/or contribute
more.

In theory, the documents that accompany bug reports are:
* Used to verify that bug fixes do fix the reported issue;
* Construct test documents to be incorporated into QA;

SUGGESTION #4: If a test harness is too complicated,

Assuming the a11y issues are solved (which is required, if LibO is to be
deployed in corporate environment in a legal jurisdiction that takes a11y
legislation as something more significant than a bone for voters), the
stumbling block is the number of platforms each item of functionality can be
tested on.

Even basic testing requires 91 platforms. (12 for Windows, 5 for Mac OS X, 10
for BSD distros, 2 for OpenSolaris, 10 each for Ubuntu, Debian, Red Hat, Mint,
Arch, Puppy, and one each for Kali,TAILS DoD.)
If exotic platforms are included, then the number of testing platforms
increases by at least two orders of magnitude, and maybe even three.

 could the QA team make an itemized list of all the functionality of
 LibreOffice, inherited and otherwise

Methinks that LibO is like WangWriter during its prime.
C/Support and Sales: No, you can not construct spreadsheets using this
product.
Experienced users: Yes you can. Here is how to do it.
Wang developers: That won't work.
Wang tech support: It does work, regardless of what your specifications claim.

 *and create some sort of method to crowd source the testing in a manner
 designed to capture any lost functionality*?

That is what QA _currently_ does, albeit without the list of all of LibO's
current functionality.

It might be a bit too late to compile a complete list of functionality.
What is possible, is to construct a list, based upon:
* Reported regression bugs;
* Deliberately added new functionality;
* Known, existing functionality;
* New functionality added by accident, serendipity, or unintentionally, and
discovered by a user;

i.e.: a project website for each version LibreOffice with the 100,000 things
that LibreOffice can do where the users can test each one and report the test?

Depending upon how things is defined, that figure could be closer to
10,000,000,000 than 100,000.

That can be done using draw.

A long time an RFE for writing upside was submitted, and

There is a correlation between the number of books in a student's home,

 Authors
   Name
 Series
   Name of series like Dragons of Pern or Harry Potter
 Read status

 Linking should be by query.

When you design that table for Series, remember:

The same work can be in two or more series. For example: James Legge's 2
volume series _The Sacred Texts of Daoism_ was also part of Max Muller's
50 volume series _The Sacred Texts of the East_.

A series can have two or more authors. For example, _Star Trek: Deep
Space Nine_ contains books written by half a dozen different authors.

Books set in the same world need not be part of a series, even though
marketing mistakenly claims that they are a series. For example: Anne
McCaffrey's _P.E.R.N._ novels.

Consider how you'll handle spin-of series. For example: _Star Trek: The
Next Generation_ alongside _Star Trek: Deep Space Nine_, alongside _Star
Trek: Corp of Engineers_, etc.

Consider how you'll handle trilogies such as Douglas Adams _The
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_, (Officially, it is a trilogy in five
parts, or six parts, if _And Another Thing..._ is included in that trilogy.)

For the Read Status table, you might also want to have tags for
reread, and acquired.

###

FWIW, the typical heavy reader will take 210 years to read a million
pages:
* Heavy Reader being defined as reading 17 books per year.
(http://libraries.pewinternet.org/2012/04/04/part-2-the-general-reading-habits-of-americans/)

On 8/6/2014 10:55 AM, Paul wrote:

 But that doesn't change the fact that the concept of an LTS version has
 nothing to do with the business deals behind it.

Yes, and no.

As a general rule, Long Term Support is a direct function of
business/corporate support. (Debian is probably the best known example
of an entity that provides Long Term Support versions of software it
maintains, but not commercial support for that software.)

The major users of LTS versions of software are corporate entities. It
is not uncommon for those organizations to test software for three to
six months, prior to deploying it throughout the organization. Once
deployed, the expectation is that it will be used for at least three
years, with five to ten years being not uncommon. In extreme cases, the
software remains in use for 15+ years after original deployment. (I'm
aware of one firm that retired its mission critical software three
years ago. That software was written for MS-DOS 3.31, and would not run
on any later version of MS-DOS, nor on competitors, such as PC-DOS,
DrDos, and 4Dos.)

Were LibreOffice to offer an LTS version, then it would have to be
supported for at least one year, and probably two or three years. With
six months between versions, companies simply don't have the time tofix
the things that the new version breaks.

My recommendation would be:
* Bleeding edge development: Nightly Build: This version will physically
destroy your system. You have been warned. The Document Foundation is
not responsible for the resulting destruction;
* Beta: Version 4.5.x: This version will destroy your data. If that is
not an issue for you, then use it, because it has all the bells,
whistles, and bugs in it. The Document Foundation not responsible for
your data loss, or any other loss you suffer, by using this version;

* Stable: Version 4.4: This is the current version. Some of the bugs
have been removed, but it has all of the current bells and whistles;
* LTS: Version 4.0: This version may lack bells and whistles, but most
of the bugs have been removed. Bug fixes are deliberately incorporated
into this version. New bells and whistles are deliberately omitted from
this version;

I am deliberately tying the LTS version to increments in the major
version number. (I don't remember the criteria for incrementing the
major version number, and a search of the LibO site doesn't come up with
anything.)(LTS status is granted when version 5.1.0 is released, rather
than 5.0.0.)

###

As far as fresh and still go, the terms are utterly meaningless to
people both within and without the LibreOffice community. So
meaningless, that people will skip the product, and search for something
that they understand, without having to consult a dictionary. (The
definitions at _Urban Dictionary_ are enough to convince hesitant users
that none of these versions are safe to install.)

Replace the terms with the version numbers. Whilst people might not
understand the difference, they will see that one is 4.20, and the other
is 4.3.0.

(Something else they have in common, is that both are one earthquake away from
being completely obliterated from the map.)

smallest average travel distance, you pick the middle of Ohio (Columbus,
Ohio).

Shortest distance does not correlate with easiest to get to.
SanSan residents will go through Atlanta.
BosWash residents will go through either Detroit or Chicago.
Fly-over country residents will probably go through both Denver and Chicago.

1. Easy / cheap air fare to the location
2. Affordable lodging and food

Affordable lodging means going during the off season.
Cheap airfare means getting either a 90 day or 180 day APEX fare.

Also consider that rail is a viable alternative in BosWash.

Something I've missed in the conversation is:
* Roughly how many people are the organizers planning for?
* How many days will it last?

* Of those that might be going, is there a geographic centre that might be
more appropriate?
A while ago I saw something that implied that there was an extremely large
cluster of LibO users in Puget Sound.
