something else

Fred James

Mageia 8

In older versions this worked by pressing stuff like ,

First, use a font manager to look through the characters in your font
and jot down the Unicode numbers for the special characters you want
to use. Anywhere, in any application, you can enter the character with
Ctrl-Shift-u, plus the Unicode number, followed by a space.

That is a bit time consuming, so an easier way is to enable the Alt-key
combinations. These are part of your desktop environment, so
implementing them varies according to which desktop you use. On my Xfce
desktop I set it to use the Windows key (which is otherwise useless).
To type an á I just hold down the Windows key while I type a single
apostrophe, followed by a regular a, and then the á appears.

The Alt-key combinations can't be used for some special characters, so
then I use the Unicode number.

In LO you can use the Insert Special Character menu which pops up a
window displaying all the characters in the font you are using. You can
select as many as you want and then paste them into your text. I
usually do this when I want to type several words in small caps using
the true small caps in my favorite font rather than let LO scale down
real caps, which makes them look washed out.
