Hi
I want to download Open Office v3 for free, in DEB format or another format so
that I can install the Writer for Linux Mint.

Why not use the latest version AOO 4.1.1? You can download it at
http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html

This is because for the last 2 years or more I have been used to using the
Writer of Open Office v3 (File version 3.0.9357.500; Product version 3.00.9357)
installed from a disc on this Windows Vista and 7 laptop.
...
So, in reference to that I am asking for someones help: please can you find the
English GB Open Office v3 file on the openoffice.org website or another
'trusted' website for me to download?

The en-GB versions of OOo 3.1.1, 3.2.0, 3.2.1, and 3.3.0 can be found at
http://archive.apache.org/dist/incubator/ooo/localized/en-GB/

However, I would recommend upgrading to AOO 4.1.1

...
P.S. Please start any message with Dear or Hi Mr Price. Thank you

No.

RE: Drop Down Menu in AOO4.1.1

2015-01-28 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Let me try my understanding and perhaps help to calibrate what you are after.

 1. Consider a button that would pop out a small calendar in the usual format,
with navigation from month to month and the typical 4-5 rows of date numbers
against days of the week. There might also be some convenience for navigating
to distant months that do not have the current date.

Clicking on a date would cause the specified date to inserted into a
currently-selected cell. Closing the calendar without clicking would not make
an entry. If the calendar pop-out is kept active, other dates could be
selected into other cells.

 2. Another pop-out might be more like a calculator that works with dates.
That is more of a stretch. Some of your examples suggest that kind of activity.

Q1. With regard to (1), which might be an interesting exercise for creation of
an extension, I wonder how close one can get already by the ways that
date-formatted cells accept abbreviated entries. For example, entering a month
and day, such as 01-28 (today in my locale settings) can automatically enter a
full calendar date in the current year. This is commonplace. I don't know
what would happen if I entered just 28 when the cell is already formatted to
contain a date.

I know this is not the same as being able to look at a calendar and use the
orientation that provides to help us determine a past or future date. Is it
any saving of effort, so long that you have a calendar handy?

Q2. Would a utility that ran outside of OpenOffice Calc that provided (1), and
put a full calendar date (and even times converted from the local time) onto
the clipboard for pasting into a document of any kind, including Calc cells be
a step in the right direction that would give you some of the working
efficiency you care about?

Note that I have omitted consideration of date calculations since those are
easily accomplished with Calc already, just as calculations among other cell
entries. It takes some understanding of cell formatting for date-times and for
time intervals, but there is extensive support in Calc already.

There are no suggested values; I manually monitor data on a random date
(whenever I happen to be close to an elapsed time meter that is connected to my
heating system. I write the data on paper, and note also the date. Then, I
enter the collected data into my AOO spreadsheet.

I am afraid I failed to be clear about what I desire. I am looking for a
Calendar-type of dropdown menu to be repeated within a row of spreadsheet
cells. I don't know the correct name ! (Might need a macro? Or, perhaps an
add-on to AOO.). Thus, I have not been successful searching in AOO's Help file.

As I mentioned, I seek an easier way to enter a calendar date; similar to what
may be found in a financial s/w (e.g., checkbook register entry) or in a
Calendar s/w, where I can quickly select a desired Month, then the Day of that
month, all within a preselected Year. It would be great if the DD/MM/ is
repeated (unchanged) until I menu-select a new DD/MM/.

Is there such a function in AOO? Once the date is selected, the spreadsheet
formula calcs the elapsed number of days between one cell and the immediate
next cell. For example:

A1 contains the date of, last Thursday; today is Wednesday, which is set in A2.
I need to count the number of days; A2-A1, to calc amount of Heating Fuel
consumed. Counting the number of elapsed days is not the issue; quick
selection of revised date data is.

Maybe such a dropdown menu is available in AOO Base, and I will need to combine
Base and Spreadsheet?

the unicode character codes for musical characters are summed up here:

if your fonts support them, then you are welcome to insert them throuh 'insert

however, the topic is rather specialised, so most of the list members are
likely to have never touched it and thus not quite catch what you need if you

There are Compose key and Unicode inputs for these things, which may or may not
work on OO. (They work on Kate, but not on Thunderbird,
so I can't demonstrate them in a message.) Here is what you can get, in both
formats:

#b or U266D flat sign
#e or U266A eighth note
#f or U266E natural sign
#q or U2669 quarter note
#E or U266B tied eight notes
#S or U266C tied sixteenth notes
## or U266F sharp sign

Hellebaard (www.hellebaard.nl)
I bought mine from a US distributor, but I don't remember which one--could
have been Amazon.

Hope that helps--doug

RE: Windows 8, Open Office Install Failed

2015-01-28 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Hi John,

Sometimes there are failures because of incompatibilities in protocols. And
sometimes there is a failure somewhere in the path between the download and you.

The next time you try, please make note of the following things:

 1. The name and version of the browser you are using.
 2. Are you using Windows 8 or 8.1 and on what computer?
 3. When you go to http://openoffice.org/download and select download for
Windows, and are patiently waiting for the download to start (don't click
anything), note what it says about Mirror provided by: in the bar that
mentions Apache OpenOffice and what to do if the download doesn't start or
doesn't work.
 4. When the download starts and you are asked to run or save the file, note
the from there too. Save the file of course.
 5. Where are you saving the file? If you have tried more than once, it helps
to give the files different names so you can compare what ends up being there.

If the problem persists, please provide that information with your report back
to this list.

Here is further investigation that you can conduct.

 6. Does the file that is stored resemble the name of the file, but it may say
something like -partial on the end?
 7. If the file seems to be there (it will be about 134 MB), there is more you
can do. (The file properties, if you check them by right-clicking on the file
name in the Windows File Explorer, should provide a size of 140,910,890 bytes.)
 8. If it doesn't seem to be there it means there was some sort of interruption
and it is then necessary to look for other causes. Let us know and we can look
at how to trouble-shoot that.
 9. If the file repeatedly seems to be complete, but failure is stated every
time, rename the file so everything *after* .exe in the name that was used is
stripped off.
 10. If you know how to do this, you can download a digital hash value for the
download you have and check the hash to confirm that the file is actually
complete and downloaded accurately.
 11. If (10) indicates the file was corrupted then treat the same as (8, above)
and include these further details in your report.
 12. If you don't do (10) or the digital hash checks, you can attempt executing
the installer. Save all open work first.
 13. When you attempt execution, it may fail immediately. If the installer
starts up, it will check the file itself. If that checks out, the installation
will probably proceed correctly.

Where are you trying to download from? You should be getting it from
 www.openoffice.org and nowhere else.

BTW, you may want to check your computer clock. It appears you sent
this message last month. You can configure your computer to use a NTP
(Internet Time) server, which will ensure your time date are always
correct. I'm not familiar with Windows 8, but in Windows 7 you right
click on the clock and select Adjust date/time to get to Internet Time
 configuration.

When you say ”writing notes”, do youreferring to writing music? Characters
like 턞 ♭ 턆 ♯♩♮♩♭♩ 턇 ?
I'm not sure I understand your problem. If you want to write music, there
are much more appropriate software for doing that. Or are you just writing
ABOUT music and need some musical characters here and there?

Musical symbols are located from U+1D100 – U+1D1DD. If you are running some
kind of Linux you can easily type them by just entering Ctrl+Shift+u and
their UNICODE. If you are running something else, I don't know. Probably
just as easy.
