Liebes OpenOffice Team,
ich habe eine längere Textdatei verfasst, die auf wundersame Weise auf
einmal bei Öffnung keine Buchstaben sondern nur noch Rauten zeigt. Es
gelingt mir nicht den Text auch über andere Textprogramme zu lesen. Wer
weiss Rat?

Just as a matter of interest, I assume you all know that Thunderbird may be
finding a new home this year, according to Mark Surman, executive director
of the Mozilla Foundation. This probably will make little or no difference
to users, since Thunderbird has been a purely volunteer-run project for the
past 4 years, but I find the prospect interesting, since The Apache
Foundation and The Document Foundation are both under consideration.

gotten a bit PO'd at Thunderbird.

Try it and see for yourself--it's free.

Doug,
I am currently using Thunderbird 45.0 under Slackware Linux 14.1 and it
does allow printing the address book. Bring up the Address Book and
select File | Print Address Book...
It also has options to print a single contact or print preview either
option.

I agree the frequent updates are a PITA, and I am not sure they are all
needed security updates. It is only slightly better than, ugh, the
Flash plugin. However, I usually do monthly backups and install
security upgrades from Slackware after the backup. Therefore, my TB
updates are on a monthly rate. So what if I miss an intermediate
update. I am only "missing something" for two weeks.

I have been using TB for years and I find that it is easy to use and
configuration has gotten very easy lately. On a new installation, it is
now "automagically" going out to my ISP and getting the server names and
configuration to use, but it can be manually changed if need be. That
is hard to beat.

Use whatever tool fits your hand.

I have used Thunderbird since it came out and they made sure it is the
servant and not the master. Easy to setup, has good built in tools for
selecting server connections and ports and selecting your desired level
of security. It will import all mail lists and settings, selectively if
you want.

GO FOR IT!

This is seriously dependent on your printer! I'm not sure either of mine would
feed a card that small, but I routinely print 3x5, 4x6, and on the backs of IBM
80 column tab cards.

What I do is to set up an OO writer template with the margins suitable for the
card size. Then using 8.5x11 paper, print a test card. You want the print area
to match up with how the printer feeds the card [I've seen both center and left
side feed] and which way is 'up'. You can create templates for both portrait
and landscape on the card. A little bit of experimentation has been the road
to glory for me.

Jack,

I've used Thunderbird since, well, I don't remember it's been so long.
I hated
Outbreak when it came out, and the support I have to provide(I'm the de
facto IT head here),

to keep thatmiserable pile of crap running makes me grind my teeth.

Thunderbird does everything a mail/organizer is supposed todo. I have
35 different
email accounts set-up on it, to deal with our various domains, and
probably over 1000 mail

filters to direct mail to the appropriate folders.

IMAP is the way to go as it syncs my mail across my various computers,
tablets, and phone.

Things to do when you install TBird.

1) Install Lightning (calendar extension)
2) Provider for Google Calendar, (allows sync with google calendars). If
you're an Android
phone user, it will allow you to sync calendars across all devices with
your gmail login.
3) INSTALL "DISABLE DRAG N DROP". This little gem is awesome. I can't
tell you how many
times I accidentally dragged a folder into another one and didn't know I
did it. Then, could

not find the folder. This prevents that and it's great.
4) Install "Folder Pane View Switcher". Great extension for switching
folder views.
5) Install "ThunderKeep". Again, if Android, this puts Google Keep in a
tab in TBirdand allows

syncing across all devices.

there are other great extension you can add to extend the functionality
of TBird,and that's the
difference with open source software. Stuff from SoftSquishy (Micro$oft)
is designed to make
the shareholders rich. Software from Open Source is designed to solve
problems, accomplish

tasks, and work for the user.

I have tomaintain Outbreak for the people here, but I don't have to use
it. Exercising my right
of freedom of choice, I choose to use a functional piece of software
instead of blindly following

the SoftSquishy lemmings over the cliff.

Some of us can write 10,000 page epistles on Thunderbird, which, upon
reading, won't even approach use-cases, or specific scenarios you might
have.

> I want to see if I can set up my groups and all of my addresses in

You can setup address books for Thunderbird.
However, the file format used for address books is defiantly not human
readable, and, arguably, not machine readable. Outside of very old
versions of Firefox, oldish versions of SeaMonkey, Thunderbird, and,
allegedly, LibreOffice, but not Apache OpenOffice, nothing can correctly
read the address book.
Adding insult to injury,
is not very good at importing foreign address books.

You can setup groups for Thunderbird.
I've forgotten the associated caveats. :(

>and stop using Outlook.

Whether or not Thunderbird can replace Outlook for you, depends upon
what you use Outlook for, and how you use it for that purpose.

So I was trying to print up some flash cards on open office. But on windows 10
I could not get the word processor to go to landscape never mind trying to
change the tabs on either side. I was wondering is this a glitch with windows
10 or something wrong with the software?
