As a long time user of OpenOffice and Mac computers I would be hesitant to open
software that the Gatekeeper blocked when someone else (that I didn’t know) had
loaded that software onto the computer.

“Open Office cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified”
It doesn' t necessarily mean the OO code had malware, just that it was an
unsigned executable. Windows 11 now also prevents unsigned apps from
running, by default, showing a "blue shileld" screen.
This happens to totally legit and safe apps, like Coolterm
https://freeware.the-meiers.org/

On Win11, you disable it using the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc).

On Mac, the procedure is outlined here

2024-04-17 Thread W. Robert J. Funnell, Prof.
Michael -

I'm sorry to hear about your problem. I don't believe that the OpenOffice
project had anything to do with taking your money.

What was the contact information for the supposed 'help desk', and where did
you get the information from? Whoever gave you the information was probably
involved in the scam. I assume that you gave the information to your bank?

Good morning,
Firstly my experience. Early this month I purchased an Apple IMac from a
company OURDEAL. The purchase came with a free copy of your OPENOFFICE
software. This package could not be loaded giving the error message “Open
Office cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified. Mac OS cannot
verify that this APP is free from Malware”
I contacted OurDeal who advise me to contact yourselves. This I did and prior’s
to giving my problems was invited to pay one pound to access your help desk.
After detailing the above problem I was left hanging for 15 minutes so I closed
the call.
Today Find that you have taken 40 pounds from my bank account. WHY?
I find that I cannot re access your system giving my Email details and password
I entered at the time. I have contacted my bank and their FRAUD office is
investigating the issue.
I am a 76 yr old guy with very little IT knowledge so I ask you Please as a
gesture of honesty to refund this money to my bank asap and to ensure no
further payments are deducted from my bank account. I understand that my banks
Fraud dept will be in contact with you regarding this matter.
Meanwhile I look forward to hearing from you without any further delay,
Yours faithfully,

In addition to previous comment, know that OpenOffice and OpenOffice
volunteer support are free.

However you must access the correct websites, the actual OpenOffice
websites, to use them

The OpenOffice website is https://www.openoffice.org/

OpenOffice support options are at
https://www.openoffice.org/support/index.html#community-support. This page
provides links to the free user support communities.

You will notice, none of these pages require payment to use them.

If you do download OpenOffice from the official website there will be a
prompt asking for a donation. That prompt DOES NOT require a donation to be
able to perform the download.

This is sad. I would just about wager that the media you received or
website was loaded with malware. At least you have a Mac. That is what
protected your info. Just follow the directions from Apache and you should
be fine.
Sorry for the bad experience.

This is a function of Page Styles, page numbers are usually put into a Footer

Inserting special characters

Open both documents, resize their windows and position them next to each other.
You may need to adjust the Zoom percentage of each document in View menu. Be
careful paying attention to which document your cursor is in when making
changes.

Support on this list and on the User Group Forum at
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/ is given by volunteers in their own time
on a pro bono basis.

1) Use /Edit /Find and Replace. In Find box enter two spaces, in Replace box
enter one space, press Replace all button

2) /Insert /Field : Page number. If it is on a grey background (non printing)
/View /Field shading. If it shows "Page Number" in place of the actual number
/View /Field Names.

3) Dash replacement is enabled by a setting in /Tools /Autocorrect Options:
Options tab. There should be a tick in both the M and T columns against
"Replace dashes". These are replaced according to these entries:

"Replace Dashes
Replaces one or two hyphens with a long dash (see the following table).
Text will be replaced after you type a trailing white space (space, tab, or
return). In the following table, the A and B represent text consisting of
letters A to Z or digits 0 to 9.
Text that you type: Result that you get:
A - B (A, space, minus, space, B) A – B (A, space, en-dash,
space, B)
A -- B (A, space, minus, minus, space, B) A – B (A, space, en-dash,
space, B)
A--B (A, minus, minus, B) A—B (A, em-dash, B)
(see note below the table)
A-B (A, minus, B) A-B (unchanged)
A -B (A, space, minus, B) A -B (unchanged)
A --B (A, space, minus, minus, B) A –B (A, space, en-dash, B)

You can see this properly set out by /Tools /Autocorrect options and pressing
the Help button on that page.

4) You need to open another instance in Writer of the second file and position
the two Writer windows side by side. You will need to manually steer both to
keep the files in sync.

5) The system should automatically highlight mis-spellings if a dictionary has
been selected for the chosen language.

If you have queries on any of the above, please log on to the Forum at the
above URL and state your problem.

OpenOffice 4.1.X should work with macOS 10.7 Lion and greater.

It will show “OpenOffice”. She can try “Force Quit” from the Apple menu to see
if there is an OpenOffice already running.

The other question is if she is running from the installation disk or from the
Applications folder. OpenOffice should be copied from the installation disk
image to Applications in the Finder.

On the AOO-en Forum this is given; I think the solution may be applicable in
this case:

Q01: How do I correct the following problem?:
The application "OpenOffice" was forced to quit while trying to restore its
windows. Do you want to try to restore its windows again?

A01: This is a MacOS problem, typically created when your computer shuts down
unexpecedly, such as battery failure in a laptop, or power failure in a
desktop. Depending on your level of MacOS, the message may say "reopen" instead
of "restore". Reinstalling OpenOffice will not fix the problem so downloading
and reinstalling the application is a waste of your time. Creating a new
profile (Q02/A02) for this message is also a waste of your time. Quit
OpenOffice. If OpenOffice → Quit is does not terminate the program use  →
Force Quit → OpenOffice → Force Quit.

In Finder use Go (menu) → Go to Folder → ~/Library/Saved Application State →
OK. It is probably best to copy the path from this tutorial and paste it into
the Go to Folder dialog. Locate org.openoffice.script.savedState in the list
and drag it to the trash. Launch OpenOffice. That's a ~, not a -, before
/Library. You must include the ~ in the 33-character folder name.

A link to the entry on the AOO-en Forum
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74=89283=420635

And the details are in A01 (Answer 01)

But note: I am not a Mac user, so the above suggestion is just a guess on my
part. However, I doubt it will cause the computer to explode (much!)

Re: Open Office Frozen Need assistance immediately

2021-02-06 Thread Andrew Pitonyak

I am not certain if Kate has subscribed so I am copying her directly.

Kate is using a Mac that is 14 years old. The OS is version 10.11.6

When AOO is started, it wants to recover her files. But AOO hangs whether she
tells it to recover the files or not (my words, not hers, so I might have the
wording a bit wrong). What it really asks is if it should re-open the previous
windows. This window hangs and she cannot do anything with it.

So, first question. How can kate start AOO so that it will NOT prompt to
recover files. Note that no data will be lost because everything is saved.

Kate does not see a lock file in the directory, so there is probably not one.

>From the finder window, she is able to open the file, but it seems like it is
>running a second copy of AOO. I don't really know if it might really be
>"OpenOffice" and not AOO.

First question, how can she kill that initial window so that it stops coming up
when the computer starts.

OpenOffice is a free program and in consequence can afford no customer support
lines; this mailing list is manned by volunteers in their own time, on a pro
bono basis.

Is the "Reopen or Close" message actually a "Recover or Close" message when you
start OpenOffice? If so, this is an indication that OpenOffice and the file
were improperly closed on a previous use, perhaps by a program or computer
crash, or perhaps by over hasty close down of the computer, before the
OpenOffice housekeeping information had been written to disk. If the message is
the "Recover or Close" message then select Recover and OpenOffice will attempt
to recover the file. If it is unable to do so, press Cancel, then open a
backup or previously Saved version of the file. It should then be able to
/File /Export as PDF.

This is what I used:

I retried three times, and different modules would show up in the

This might be a caching issue on the forum. So my recommendation is that

Fwd: Travel Assistance applications open. Please inform your communities

2018-02-18 Thread Peter kovacs
Hello all,
Sorry for the delay.
I forward to a message received from TAC:

The Travel Assistance Committee (TAC) are pleased to announce that travel
assistance applications for ApacheCon NA 2018 are now open!

We will be supporting ApacheCon NA Montreal, Canada on 24th - 29th September
2018

TAC exists to help those that would like to attend ApacheCon events, but are
unable to do so for financial reasons.
For more info on this years applications and qualifying criteria, please visit
the TAC website at < http://www.apache.org/travel/
<http://www.apache.org/travel/> >. Applications are now open and will close 1st
May.

Important: Applications close on May 1st, 2018. Applicants have until the
closing date above to submit their applications (which should contain as much
supporting material as required to efficiently and accurately process their
request), this will enable TAC to announce successful awards shortly
afterwards.

As usual, TAC expects to deal with a range of applications from a diverse range
of backgrounds. We therefore encourage (as always) anyone thinking about
sending in an application to do so ASAP.
We look forward to greeting many of you in Montreal

Kind Regards,
Gavin - (On behalf of the Travel Assistance Committee)

My advice in my earlier postings on this thread was directed to the OP. I have
not time or inclination to address the unfamiliarity with use of Page Styles in
OpenOffice reflected by some of the other posters, who may continue to use or
not use Page Styles as they in their confusion may think fit.

As I am about to travel abroad to fill a long standing commitment to attend an
overseas conference I will be offline for about a week and shall make no

That bafflement is precisely why the OP should be told how complicated
their proposal is.
That the first hundred plus attempts to create the pages probably will
not produce the desired results.
(Maybe if somebody sends them detailed, step by step instructions, for
creating the first ten to twenty pages,

You should download and install OpenOffice on the new computer.
The only site from which OpenOffice should be downloaded is
http://www.openoffice.org/download

This site will redirect you to a SourceForge site and your download will start
in about five seconds with no need to click on anything else (Do NOT click on
anything else).

One can verify (and should verify) that the downloaded file is as it left the
code factory by the methods described in
Apache OpenOffice - How to verify the integrity of the downloaded file?

As OO is opensource, many sites manipulate search engines so that they come
high on the hit list, and compile OO with unwanted add-ons or charge for it
with spurious offers of support.

We recommend downloading only from the above site and carrying out the
integrity check before installing.

If installing a download from the above site Windows prompts for allowing
changes, you should answer "yes".

OpemOffice is a volunteer driven project where we give of our time on a pro
bono basis; there are no provisions for remote intervention from this project
on your computer whether for downloading or installation.

If you are in doubt about any of the download/installation steps, you should
seek local informed help - often a computer informed student will be pleased to
assist.

Hello Craig,

What you need is OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software. Windows does
not have native (comes with Windows) OCR as far as I know. The software
that comes with printers that have built in scanners may include OCR
software. There are also 3rd party OCR programs available.

Here's a link I found to Windows OCR programs. I'm not familiar with any of
them.

Re: New User; Request For Assistance/Tech Info; etc. "Tony Badger" to the Rescue?

2015-10-31 Thread Anthony J. Rudgers

Greetings Craig,

I've got a Canon Pixma MX870 multi-function printer w/ a Scanner. First you
have to go to the Canon website & download everything you can (all
"utilities") related to your particular printer. You'll eventually get
something (a "shortcut"} on your "desktop" that says "Canon Solutions Menu."
Click on it. Choose the option "scan Photos & Docs." Then click on "OCR."
That means "optical character recognition," which lets your computer turn
images of text into actual text. Then put your document onto your printer's
copier glass-plate input stage, go to your computer, & click on the "scan"
button on the Canon screen. The result will be an elementary text document
somewhere on your computer. My text scanned documents usually wind up in my
"Pictures Library" in a folder called "MP Navigator EX." But you may have
to hunt down the saved scan copy down on your computer. So give it a name,
when you save it, that's easy to search for. Once you've found your text
document, open it & then Copy all the text therein onto your so-called
Windows "clipboard."

Now open your favorite word processor to create a document. Set up its
initial formatting, & then Paste your copied text into the document you
created. Now go to work on its text just like you do for any other
document!

Best wishes,

Your free to do everything you prefer, but you make maintenance a

edit your forms. When you create each page on a new sheet you didn't
have the current problems.
Secondly as all your headings are 90% the same it is easy to copy a
sheet by selecting the Tab and Move/Copy Sheet from the drop down menu.

Can you tell me how to do the following

POSITION THE PICRURE IN THE CELL?

/Is that just a case of paste it there/

Make sure the Cell or Merged Cells are greater that the picture. Drag
your picture inside
the Merged Cells. Select Position and size with your Right Mouse Button
and tick the Protect field.

Select Anchor with your Right Mouse Button and select To Cell.

DEFINE PRINT RANGES?

Select the area you like to print and from the toolbar select Format --
Print Ranges .. Define

A print ranges is only applicable for the selected Sheet.

INSERT MANUAL PAGE BREAKS?

Select a Cell which should be on the next page and select Insert --
Manual Break ... Row Break

Thank you

And by the way please reply to the mailing list so anyone can answer /

I recommend you to go to Tools - Options - OpenOffice Calc - View.
On the visual aid you disable the grid lines, and then click ok.
Now going to the zoom scale at the bottom right edge of the window you can
select something like 50% and see how the pages are rendered on your
spreadsheet and make the proper adjustments.

I've enlisted the Manual Break function, which works for me. The initial

The problem is, even though the title page(s) are their own break, when I add

 How can I avoid this?

Page numbering is not a document property. It is a Page Style Property. Every
time you change the format of page numbering, such as On or Off, Roman
numerals, Arabic numerals, etc, you need to use a different Page Style, which
style is introduced by the /Insert /Break /Page Break mechanism.

This tutorial on Page Numbering may help:
