Er, except that - as it happens - it was Dennis who told you that you
*couldn't* do this in Writer and it was I that then explained how you could!

Yes, that is what I was thinking of.

I don't understand why there has to be a single section, although that works in
Publisher.

I hesitate to query an expert, and I'm not sure exactly what you mean
here. But in OpenOffice Writer I can:

o Create two frames - which can be on unrelated pages, of course.
o Link the frames.
o Insert text into the first frame - which then flows into the other.
o Select the text (so in both frames).
o Insert a section with multiple columns. The single section contains
all the text and is divided between the linked frames.

Does that achieve what you describe?

I was just rereading this thread.. never saw the subject line.
Sorry...

I volunteered for a animal shelter and two sports organizations
and I tried out scribus and inkscape.

[orcmid]

It is at best a mix. There are functions of Publisher that OpenOffice Writer
does not have (such as column flow into non-contiguous pages) but that might
not matter to you. And Publisher tends to depend on Word as a choice source of
content to import into Publisher.

Publisher 2016 is included with the desktop applications provided under Office
365 Home and Personal (along with Access). That's how I happen to have it
(except with 365 Business). If you only need a non-business subscription to
Office 365, those would seem to be useful.

If you are still running Publisher, it should be easy enough to install Apache
OpenOffice and do your own comparison testing.

And there are many Desktop Publishing Software products around, and a few are
free. Without knowing more about your needs, other than as a beginner, it is
difficult to recommend particular options among them.

Just remember, however you approach this, to always keep progressive backups
and be careful how you close your work and shut down your computer, avoiding
any kind of loss of your work to only the most recent changes.

Hi Wade, I am looking to replace MS Publisher with something less expensive and
easier to get. I am pretty good using Publisher. Does Write work like Word or
Publisher or a mix? I was looking for a specific product or something to move
to.

I think Toki said a beginner to publishing, not a specific product.

Toki, check out http://fullcirclemagazine.org/ Its a linux mag but they talk
about the tech they use to produce it. Write is one one of their tools. I think
they even have a article series about publishing.
