Re: PLEASE Help. I cannot open an Open Office file saved to my desktop.

2022-04-25 Thread PCS

My apologies if I am stating the obvious, but maybe it can be opened by another
application. If you are using a Macintosh, right-click on the OO document and
select "Open With” and try one of the non-default apps in the list. I have
found that you can usually get usable text if you open an inaccessible document
with TextEdit, though you may have to strip out a lot of formatting characters
to make it easily readable, then copy it to and reformat it in a new WP
document. If you are using Windows I assume it must have some equivalent of the
Mac’s “Open With”.

2022-04-24 Thread george bornyek

Hello,
Since having computers Open Office is all that I use.  This malfunction has
never happened before.  What went wrong?
I crafted a very special letter to Elon Musk on Open Office, saved it and there
is nothing that I can do to open it.
I create my email and other memos etc on Open Office then copy-paste it to
where I will use it.
Please help me.

I have also had this problem, this year was the first time ever in 29 years w/
computers. Was working w/ someone else in a rush working from home w/ out her
office equipment.

You are not alone!
Can you look through all the other places where you might have saved an earlier
version?

I now save documents and other important files in a variety of places going
along. Documents folder, desktop, specifically named folder for that type of
file, project folder etc. Messy but necessary for the way I work.

You can also set up a backup to an external hard drive/ rocket stick or dongle
etc so as to save elsewhere than your computer incase of hard drive problems.

Every time I save a document it gets a slightly different name. As an
example... name, date, v 1,2 etc. V being version for that date. Messy but
reliable.

You may have a slightly earlier version somewhere which would avoid you having
to redo everything. Can you do a general search w/ slightly different names?

You can also email versions to yourself. You will then have the file in your
email as sent & received mail boxes. Do this at the end of the day.

Good luck!
We have all been there & it is a hard learned lesson. Everyone has this story
too so don’t feel to bad just deal with it for the future.

On my Windows the files for the palettes (with the extension .soc) are in

If you have your own palette back it might be useful to copy it as standard.soc.

Because, you haven't set the *AutoCorrect* option to "*URL Recognition*"
or used the *Insert Link* option.

Both should work.
By the way you can't *Cut and Paste* a website only *Copy and Paste* works.

The standard (default) behavior for activating hyperlinks within OOo is
to use Ctrl+click. This behavior can be changed in *Tools > Options >

If you want me to test load your document, send a copy to my home email address
(assuming there is nothing sensitive) and I can take a peek in case it is just
something with your configuration that went bad. I have never seen this so

The fact that the doc loads is a good sign.

A quick test (of interest), is to copy some of those black lines where you
expect words to be and paste them into a regular text editor (on windows,
notepad is a common choice). This should tell you if it is just a font problem
(or similar).

Best of luck.

I don't understand what you mean by this. Complete words are offered, even
rare ones if they've been harvested from the user's documents.

If the questioner's "60minutePKG" and "60minutemassage" had both been
harvested (I've excised the spaces to allow the effect to show), typing "60m"
would show what is common between the possibilities, so just
"60minute", not either of the complete texts. S/he said that individual
suggestions appeared, which is indeed what happens in a spreadsheet.

Display of what's in common has never been my experience. For example,
I have 'accelerating' and 'acceleration' in my list, and as soon as I
type 'acc' it offers 'accelerating', not just 'accelerati'. I've often
wished it would display just what's in common. (I'm actually using LO
at the moment but my recollection is that it's the same in AOO.)

I assumed that the message was about a word-processing document. If so, if
you go to Tools > AutoCorrect > AutoCorrect Options there's a 'Word
Completion' tab that seems to give control over what word completion is
done.

I had wondered that but ruled it out, for various reasons:
o The default minimum word length is 10, so it is unlikely that entries as
short as some of the questioner's examples would be harvested.

My minimum word length is 8, I don't remember setting it to that.
Maybe hers was somehow set to a small value? Maybe unlikely.

o Only single word entries are harvested.

Good point.

o Complete suggestions are not provided: merely partial ones as far as they
are common.

I don't understand what you mean by this. Complete words are offered,

I'm having to guess that you are talking about entering data into a
spreadsheet document, not a word processor one. Is that so?

I assumed that the message was about a word-processing document. If
so, if you go to Tools > AutoCorrect > AutoCorrect Options there's a
'Word Completion' tab that seems to give control over what word
completion is done.

I had wondered that but ruled it out, for various reasons:
o The default minimum word length is 10, so it is unlikely that
entries as short as some of the questioner's examples would be harvested.

o Only single word entries are harvested.
o Complete suggestions are not provided: merely partial ones as far
as they are common.

o The user would not be able to tab through suggestions, as s/he describes.

This facility offers possible entries as you type, taken from
existing entries in other rows in the same column. No, I don't see
any way to adjust the order of the suggestions. But yes, there is
certainly a way to suppress this facility: just go to Tools | Cell
Content > | AutoInput and toggle it off there.

If you find yourself - as it seems - often entering similar entries
in a spreadsheet column, you may wish to consider using Data Validity.
o Select a cell range - perhaps all or most of a column - and go to
Data | Validity... .

o On the Criteria tab, for Allow, select List.
o Enter your repertoire of allowable values in the Entries box.
o Select other options as desired.

Now when you move to a cell in the range to enter a value, you will
see a down-arrow to its right. Click that with the mouse and select
the particular entry you need. Note that this technique can avoid
entering slight misspellings or variations that may create errors in
your spreadsheet but can be quite difficult to spot.

I trust this helps.

See this post for a solution to your problem
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17=75066=340454=gatekeeper#p340454

The problem is, I believe, caused by Gatekeeper on the Mac.

Okay, jokes aside, can you please better describe what that ”function”
actually did? I don't really understand what ”add certain lines to a total”
means. Certain lines? To a total? How? Can you give a simple example? What
is the function called in Excel?

I'm sure that if the function doesn't exist in Calc, it's possible to make
one with a macro, but I can't tell how complicated that would be unless I
have more information.

Not sure how much easier it could be made. Go to the home page of the
website; http://www.openoffice.org/ and right there in the middle of the
page there is a link that reads:
"I need help with my OpenOffice. Help is at hand whenever you need it."

You say "I can find that function.", but it sounds like you mean that
you cannot find the equivalent function in Calc.

Can you recall what the function might be called in Excel? A function to
"add certain lines to a total" doesn't give us much to go on, so can you
provide a more detailed description of how the function worked, or
outline the steps you took when using that function?

easy. The following is my original message.
I used to use Word up until about 10 years ago when somebody suggested Open
Office to me. I much prefer this to Word. I do have one issue though. I
used Excel a lot. They had a function where I could add certain lines to a
total. On your .ods file, I can find that function. I don't have Word or
Excel on my PC now. I miss that function. I have Open Office version 4.1.6.
Does that have the function I want? I've checked all the options at the top

Delete the "1", and then ">Insert >Page Number" at the appropriate place
on the second page. The correct page number should appear on every page.

For a computer a document can be anything e.g. a Word document, a
Drawing, a Spreadsheet or a Photo.
The computer rely on the users to define the type of document e.g. .doc,

Most applications saves with the correct file type, but allow to change

Dear Support Team,

I have used open office for a number of years and now predominantly use it for
work documents.

I use OpenOffice on my MacBook Pro 13” running on Mac OS Sierra Version 10.12.6.

Open Office sadly crashed and I now cannot edit or save changes or convert any
documents and even have to open them in an odd way.

This is due to any actions being blocked by a pop up message that will not go
away.

The message is as follows:

"The last time you opened OpenOffice, it unexpectedly quit while reopening
windows.
Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?”

"If you choose not to reopen windows, you may have to open and position the
windows yourself."

Regardless of whether I select Open or Don’t Reopen the message does not
respond and stays on the screen.

I Googled the error and found many other users have had the same issue but
their suggestions to fix it aren’t applicable.

I would really appreciate if you could kindly advise ASAP.

Many thanks.

Kind regards,

Narikai

Please help me :-)

Hi,

This morning when I opened my odt file there was a message from ASCII Filter
and I mistakenly clicked yes. It appears this had modified the actual text
content or just changed the text style from english to some other style format.
The file is now opens in square symbols and it is unintelligable to read. There
is nothing in english. The whole file has been altered. This file is for work
so it is very important the work is not list.

The ASCII Filter can't interpret the character set used in the document,
this is because your file is corrupt.
Most likely this happens when your system is shut down before OpenOffice
was able to write everything to disk.
Keep in mind that OpenOffice compresses all files which takes some
processing time.

Am not sure if the contents have disappeared or just the english has changed to
some other style format and so the work is retrievable. I need the restored
version from yesterday 8/3/2017 around 5:09 pm which is the version it was
before I opened the file this morning.

Under Tools -> Options -> Load/Save -> General there is an option to
create backup's
Backups are stored in the directory set under Tools -> Options ->
OpenOffice -> Paths

Please can you have a look at the file and if you are able to restore please do
so. The file is attached to this email.

I very much appreciate your help in this matter. I have very little to no
understanding of this type of stuff so have no idea what must be done.

Thank you

Hi
My copy of Writer recently stopped insert current dates, page numbers, etc.  I
attempted to get on the community forum to get a solution for this. However, I
found that I am locked out from logging in.  As suggested, I tried to re
register.  That was not allowed as my e-mail address was already in use, by me
from the previous account.  Since my e-mail account was already in use by me, I
am not allowed to request a password change either.  Then the forum website
suggested contacting the administrator.  But attempts to find out how to
contact the administrator could not work either without a address for that.
What are we suppose to do?  Can you forward this to the administrator to get
this fixed?

If you have selected multiple sheets either by purpose or accidentally data
entries or changes are done on all selected sheets.
This can be handy if you like to enter formulas on multiple sheets, but as you
experienced it can be a disaster when you're not aware of it.

1. I found this on converting Lotus Approach.  It converts to Excel format;
OpenOffice can read Excel files, so you can read these and convert into a
database format supported by OpenOffice.

True if it's strictly an algorithmic process.

Not necessarily true if you introduce variability from external sources [ping
or response time on the network, or stock market fluctuations for example].
Pseudo random implies repeatability.

In a prior life I came up with a scheme for a pseudorandom generator that used
computer hardware measured values determined at power on to generate a
non-repeatable seed.

I think we are converging on violent agreement!

Grab the spreadsheet Inglenook.OTS, that should be linked to this email,
and downloadable from Box.com.

An older, but working version can be found at
https://groups.io/g/ODF_Templates/files/Model%20Railroading

I think that
https://www.dropbox.com/s/n2k6zd4wxjigu8w/inglenook.ods?dl=0 contains a
working version.

On the page "IQ" is one solution to generating a sequence of random
numbers, without duplicating any numbers. For your specific use-case,
change the random number multiplier to 69, from whatever the formula
uses. Then, if there are less than 69 numbers in the initial column,
increase the number to 69, and create additional rows, and columns, as
needed.
In essence, you need to add one column, for every row that is added.

It might take as much as an hour or so playing with the spreadsheet, and
studying the formulas, to understand what it is doing.

This is the same idea as dealing cards from a shuffled pack. So all
you need to do is take the set of numbers, shuffle them, and use as
many as you require from the start of the shuffled list.

o Enter 1 into a spreadsheet cell.
o Fill down the column to 69.
o In a parallel column, enter =RAND() and fill that down too.
o Select both columns of cells.
o Go to Data | Sort... and sort on the column of random numbers.

I trust this helps.

Delete or rename your OpenOffice user profile. As you are using Windows do this
by:

Close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File Explorer. Copy and paste
%appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer Address Bar and press Enter. Delete
or Rename the "user" folder. Start OpenOffice.

This cures most spellcheck problems.

Please help me resolve this problem

2014-08-17 Thread Kathryn Silverton

Greetings,

How do I correct the following:

There is a red underscore under every word, even when it is spelled
correctly. The only way I have found to get rid of it is to go to

Tools
Language
For all text
None

This disables spell check completely.

Seeing the red underscore under every word is annoying and not helpful.

Thank you most kindly. Other than this issue, I very much enjoy using
Open Office.

Sincerely,

kathryn

 Katheryn,
The list members would be able to be of better help if you
included in your question the application that is red-underlining
 the words that you type.

I'm informed by private email that the problem was solved by deleting or
renaming the OpenOffice User Profile.

Re: DOWNLOADED V.4 Problems. Please Help

 Hi,

I have downloaded v.4 last week.

 PLEASE HELP!

Problem #1: When I load my document all my GRAPHICS are empty.
I have tried for several hours to turn this on with no luck. Can you PLEASE
 help
I load my file and I get an empty graphics box .. It has the path
name to my doc, but no graphic is present.
How can I fix and make sure this stays “on”???

You should check /Tools/ Options /OpenOffice Writer : View and make sure
Display : Graphics is checked. You should also adjust /Tools /Options
/OpenOffice : Memory and increase the memory allocation to 256MB, decrease
number of undo steps to 10 or 20, and adjust the other settings based on the
information in this Forum post
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7p=314079#p314079

It may be that your document has too many or too complex images, in which case
you have a number of choices.

Firstly, if your output is standard print, your photographic images need be no
finer resolution than 180/210 dpi - anything more cannot be perceived by the
eye under normal viewing conditions. Graphics, such as line drawings, can with
advantage be 600 dpi.

Secondly, it may be that your total use of images is exceeding the memory
allocations, in which case I suggest splitting your document into smaller
chunks, each containing a smaller count of images - be advised by the above
posting.

Problem #2: When I am working in v.4 the program “SHUTS DOWN”, or “CRASHES”.
When I restore I lost the work I did prior to crash..
Can someone PLEASE HELP. This happens approximately every 20 minutes when I
 am manipulating the style.

More importantly, you need to cure the crashing. The standard cure is to
recommend that (even on an unstable new installation) the User Profile be
deleted or renamed. Details are given in
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74t=12426
This cures a surprisingly large proportion of OpenOffice problems.

If that doesn't cure your instability, you need to start Windows in Safe Mode,
and see if OpenOffice runs stable in that mode. If it does, you have to look
for interference from some other program/driver/service running on your
computer when it is started in Windows normal mode.

Once you have defined your styles you should not need to tweak them - this is
the purpose of styles.

 Can someone PLEASE HELP

 Thank You
 Ron

If using Writer

/Tools /Options/ OpenOffice Writer : Display : View - Graphics and objects to
be checked
(/Options is under Preferences on a Mac)
