Hi Cannie,

Unfortunately there is no single definitive answer to your question,
because every template can be offered with different licence conditions.
In *MOST* cases templates are offered with licence conditions which do
NOT restrict their use for commercial purposes

The only way to accurately know under which licence the template has
been released, is to visit https://templates.openoffice.org/en find the
page for the template  you are interested in using and read the
"License" information shown there. In some cases the information may be
shown in the form of an acronym (eg. BSD) you can click on the acronym
to view the specific detail of the license

Alan B. In this email, I will make my own suggestions.


There user guides which will help you learn how to learn AOO. The 
Getting Started guide has a chapter on styles. As a beginner, the whole 
guide is worthwhile downloading and studying. Since your interest is 
text document editing, I recommend downloading the entire Writer Guide. 
It will answer many of your present questions as well as make a very 
useful reference guide.

The Documentation we have you can read at [1]

The base is a normal Database Frontend, which designed to support for 
"simple" database models.


You could write a macro that reads a Path and adds elements to a database.


If you havbe only one table, that you want to fill, it is probable 
better to use a calc sheet for the purpose.


There you can simnply add a macro that scans a directory for files and 
adds each entry to cell.



Database is better if your case is more complex than that.

This is a known issue. We can't do anything about this. Sourceforge 
modified something in their infrastructure long ago and the Templates 
and Extensions sites haven't been able to send out mails any longer

do something (e.g., remove spam comments, or reset a password).


I've e-mailed Richard a new password as a workaround so that he can 
login and pick a new one. This should solve this instance, but the

I can't resist mentioning that it's not obvious that one should look at
documentation for version 3.3 when using version 4.1. Also, it's
"interesting" that the *What's New* section of the documentation page
 contains only two items
from 2013. (Yes, I know it's a volunteer organization.)

1. the web page with links to the instructions
OpenOffice.org 3.3 User Guides (ODT) - Apache OpenOffice Wiki


2. The chapter with template usage info found in the "Getting Started
Guide" section of the webpage above. The link will download an .odt file
that opens in Writer
Ch3 - Using Styles and Templates


4. Refer to the section "Importing a template" on page 22.
The template must be imported before it can be used in the next step.
Note: you must know where the template file has been downloaded to so it
can be picked for import

5. Refer to "Using a template to create a document" on page 14.
Once a template is imported this is the only step that needs to be repeated
to create a document with a given template.

You were given explicit instructions from Brian Barker in your original
thread of how to get help when the primary process does not work for
whatever reason. Just to reiterate you need to send a message to
mailto:users-ow...@openoffice.apache.org and explain what has happened
when you have tried to unsubscribe. Be sure to mention that you have
tried to send the reply to the unsubscribe e-mail.

You will also need to exercise some patients as like all Apache
OpenOffice mailing lists the admins that monitor the list are volunteers
and do the work in their spare time.

Scooter, I could afford to upgrade, but decided against it on principle
grounds.

I am on Apple Mac computers. When I upgraded to MS Office 2011 I got angry
that not only did I have to pay over $100 for the upgrade, I also
discovered they removed Entourage from the package and had to pay an
additional $100 to get Entourage. That's when I swore those SOBs would
never see another dime of my money.

I have put Adobe into the same disdainful category and will not be
upgrading my Creative Suite package.

Good morning group,

I really don't understand these comments knocking AOO. I've been using it
for quite some time and have had few problems. Of course, I did LEARN how it
operates!
 I used MS Office for years until the price got so high, I couldn't afford
it, which forced me to find an alternate program and the Open software
community. I haven't looked back since!
I'm still using AOO for just about everything, with great success.

pressure to deliver on time you could expect to make errors.
My suggestion is to learn first the product before doing serious work 
with it.

With thousands of templates it’s hard to guess which template you can’t 
understand.
Then you didn’t tell from which website you downloaded the template which makes 
it even harder for us.
So my advice is to be a bit more specific if you need help.

Whilst the majority of templates distributed via the AOo repistory are
gratis, there are some that must be paid for, and thus linked to a third
party site. Issues with those templates can only be resolved by going to
the third party vendor in question.

Some internet browsers, notable Internet Explorer, silently rename file types 
to a generic filetype.  Outside of OpenOffice (i.e., at Windows system level, 
rename the downloaded file to type .ott; then double click it and OO will open 
the template.  You may then Save the template as you require.  Or, having done 
the rename, use /File /Templates /Organise to manage the template(s).

Are you sure you need one? You do not need an account in order to 
download templates, only to upload your own creations or to rate existing ones.


o Go to the templates web site: https://templates.openoffice.org/ .
o Click the Login button at top right.
o On the User account page, select the "Create new account" tab.
o Fill out the form.

Templates.openoffice.org should only require a login if you are a template 
developer.

You should not need a userid or password to download. Please tell us what 
templates URL you are using and also what version of Apache OpenOffice you are 
using.

Only in a world where every user is a software developer. People still
using AOO despite everything that has happened in the OO.o community tend
to be non-technical, less aware of the software market and are unlikely to
know what Bugzilla is, let alone where to find it or how to use it. A
hand-wave dismissal towards Bugzilla is thus unhelpful in my view.

The suggestion to add a "report this template"capability is a good one and
I hope SourceForge, the company maintaing the Templates web site, will add
one.

Unless specific page URLs are provided, nobody can give you the specific
reason that an extension, or template is not available.

In my experience, the four most common reasons for non-availability are:
* The item was never publicly released;

the current version of Apache OpenOffice.  However, they work with older
versions, and are thus retained.

Has it occurred to anybody else here that envelopes are just a “page style?” 
In fact, it’s already a built-in choice in AOO 4.1.3. 
So load one up in a new document. Fill in return address, and the primary 
address. Add an “ATTN:” line if it suits you. Put XXXs in the first line and 
last available line on the “envelope”, and print it on a blank sheet of A4 or 
Letter size paper. Do things fit? OK, try an real envelope. Did it work? Great! 
Do File -> Templates…::Save. Now you’ve got a rudimentary envelope template. 

But play around with it. For business matters, you may like to include fields 
for the addressee, address, address2, City, State, Zip/Postal Code. These can 
be either User Defined fields, or they can be fields that you’ve dragged and 
dropped from your contacts database. This latter one is cool, because you 
simply View Data Sources, select your contacts data, and drag the column 
headers into the proper places on the envelope template. Then when you select, 
say Henrik Schultz, his info is propagated to all data fields in the template. 
(And you spell his name correctly, instead of Heinrich like you usually do.) 
Got those fields placed? Good. File -> Templates…::Save. Overwrite the 
rudimentary one. Now you’ve got a working template. 

You can probably figure the rest out from here, but what you have so far will 
work. Remember that in AOO, styles are everything.

This may well work for envelopes depending on how your printer feeds them.  My 
envelope templates are for letter size paper - landscape - with margins set to 
the envelope area.  Mine feeds in the center but an earlier printer fed the 
envelope on the left.

There is a downloadable jewel case template at

and a downloadable template for inserts at

That isn't a template.

it was uploaded by an organization that specialises in spreading their
commercial message on high profile, non-commercial sites, in their
attempt to gain a more favourable Google Page Ranking.

losing anything useable.

There is a chance, albeit slim, that the template is available elsewhere
on the Internet. (I download most templates that look useful. However,
last week, something happened to the drive I archived them on, and lost
everything.)

I don't know why 1.3 isn't available from the AOO template repository.

Three caveats:

1: 2.0 is in German.  If you use a different locale, things might not
work as expected. (Blame _Lotus Development Corporation_ for that piece
of programming stupidity.)

2: I haven't played with 2.0, so i don't know if it really works as
advertised.

3: With one blatantly obvious exception, I do not recommend downloading
extensions, or templates, from sites other than those of developers of a
descendent of StarOffice. This specific template --- cBrainPower falls
into that category.)

That's exactly what I meant by "not altogether satisfactory 
behaviour". If I invent a (non-existent) template name,
http://templates.openoffice.org/en/template/garbage responds with 
"Page not found". Good. But
http://templates.openoffice.org/en/template/c6-envelope-printing-template 
produces "Access denied". If that page is no longer available, it is 
a pity that the message is not also "Page not found".

a)  At some point in time, both templates and extensions that are "old"
are no longer listed, when one does a search for them;

b) For templates and extensions that were deliberately removed from
services.openoffice.org, a period of time can elapse, before no evidence
of their prior existence can be found on the openoffice.org site;
