The 32 bit version will work quite happily on 64 bit Windows; just make
sure that if you need Java in OpenOffice you will need a 32 bit Java.

Along with David's excellent advise, you also need to download a 32bit

Regular crash with Windows 11

2024-04-21 Thread David Lautzenheiser

Open Office,

Currently running Open Office 4.1.15 under windows 11. In Open Office
Writer, I am attempting to edit a document that is 23 pages in length.
Whenever I make even a minor change, the program crashes with no
warning, etc.

The same version of Open Office running under windows 10 works just fine
on the same file.

Are there any known issues with Windows 11 support? I can provide the
file and more details of a crash if needed. If there is a crash log
file, I can provide that as well, providing someone points me to the
file location.

Thanks,

David Lautzenheiser

Yes, there were unofficially repackaged versions in the Microsoft Store.
They were not for free, so I never tested them.

Beginning with OpenOffice 4.1.11 we offer the official binaries in the
Windows 11 Store. Later Microsoft backported the store to Windows 10.

So, apart from downloading AOO from our website, you can install it from
the store or via Winget (commandline) as described here:

2023-06-30 Thread Alan B
Per the OO website, the current version is Windows 11 compatible.
https://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/sys_reqs_aoo41.html

I have seen some reports warning against using the Microsoft Store version
because of some broken feature issues. For that reason I suggest
downloading the latest version from the Apache OO website.
https://www.openoffice.org/

The 3.4 version only lists compatibility through Windows 8. If problems
are encountered with it on W11, rather than fight to "make it work" on W11
it would be simpler to upgrade to the known compatible version.

That version was released in 2011 and  I don't think anyone would
recommend it for use with Windows 11.

I'd suggest you upgrade to the current version from

I downloaded OpenOffice from the web, uninstalled OpenOffice and

How do I get OpenOffice in a state that I can create new text and spreadsheet

Windows 11 Crash - OpenOffice Runs - Not Responding State

2022-06-13 Thread David Stuhr

Hello,

Using OpenOffice 4.1.12 on a new Windows 11 PC. I had running on my
Thunderbird mail client, my FireFox browser and OpenOffice adding data
to a spreadsheet.

Stepped away from my PC and when I returned Thunderbird, FireFox and
OpenOffice were not running, Windows 11 was. Restarted Thunderbird,
FireFox and OpenOffice. OpenOffice attempted to recover the spreadsheet.
Task Manager showed that OpenOffice was Not Responding.

OpenOffice runs but I cannot create new text or spreadsheet documents.
Again Task Manager shows that OpenOffice is in a Not Responding state.
It appears that something is putting OpenOffice in the Not Responding
state. I have restarted Windows 11 but OpenOffice opens in a Not
Responding state.

I have 3/4 different backups so I am not concerned about loosing the
spreadsheet data.

How do I get OpenOffice in a state that I can create new text and
spreadsheet documents.

Thanks.

Note that you cannot install ANY classic Windows app on Windows 11 in S
mode!

Maybe this page can help you?

Apache OpenOffice is available in the Microsoft Store but it will not be
shown as long as you are in "S mode".

What it is is a non Microsoft site with a bunch of third party speculation.

Its sort of parallel to comic book or movie fan boy site predicting the
content of the next Star Wars episode. Fun reading but pure fiction.

Microsoft is literally, today, giving away Windows 10 for free as a
download. No way is Microsoft going to be trying to sell a Windows 11
product in competition with a free giveaway of Win 10.
