If you mean that the worksheet should appear as an empty page with no
gridlines and any tabs should look that way too, then...

1. Use the Tools>Options... menu
2. Expand the OpenOffice Calc branch
3. Select the "View" options
4. Untick the "Grid lines" item
5. Click "OK"

This change applies to every worksheet and every tab of every worksheet.

Re: need help, please

2022-11-12 Thread PCS

Dear Marie,

I’ve had the 'do you want to reopen' or 'do you want to recover' messages from
time to time, but the recovery has always worked for me so I’ve never had to
fix your problem. But I offer the following suggestions:

1. Have you tried restarting your Mac to see if that clears the problem?
My apologies for stating the obvious, but just in case you are an ‘always on’
person and that slipped your mind.

2. If the app is really stuck and nobody else offers a better solution, I
would uninstall OpenOffice (i.e. drag it from the apps folder to the trash) and
then download and install a fresh copy of the app. (And hope that the problem
doesn’t carry through in any settings or extensions that weren’t replaced when
you replaced the app.) I’m still using ADSL internet so it takes a while to
download a new copy of an app, but it’s probably better to just do that than to
spend even more time and personal energy chasing a ‘better’ solution.

3. In the unlikely event that installing a virgin copy of OpenOffice
doesn’t fix the problem, I would try replacing OO with LibreOffice, on the
chance that might fix it.

I haven’t been down into the engine room of a Mac since OS-X replaced the
Classic OS, but simple work-arounds like these usually work for me when I have
a problem that has to be fixed and I don’t know how to fix it. It may be
equivalent to using a sledge hammer instead of precision tools, but if it works
without doing any damage, then why not use it?

Peter.

2022-11-12 Thread Steven Ahlers
This often happens when there was a hasty shutdown or crash of the computer.
Click on the Apple icon and select Force Quit. Close any program/app other than
Finder that is running. Then look in the folder that you store files in for
files that have ~lock. in their name and delete them (probably just the problem
file). Restart your computer, start OpenOffice, and then open the file.

Make sure you let the program completely shut down before shutting down your
computer. Also get in the habit of saving your files and shutting down
OpenOffice when you are walking away from your computer for extended periods of
time.

As a courtesy to you I have sent you a copy of this message. As a courtesy to
me please only reply to users@openoffice.apache.org so that all users can

2022-04-25 Thread PCS

My apologies if I am stating the obvious, but maybe it can be opened by another
application. If you are using a Macintosh, right-click on the OO document and
select "Open With” and try one of the non-default apps in the list. I have
found that you can usually get usable text if you open an inaccessible document
with TextEdit, though you may have to strip out a lot of formatting characters
to make it easily readable, then copy it to and reformat it in a new WP
document. If you are using Windows I assume it must have some equivalent of the
Mac’s “Open With”.

Installing the new version should do that for you. No need to uninstall 4.1.7 (
unless you have to make space for it to install, but that will also be
monitored by the new install)

Try if installing the new version will run. It should take over your settings
for the old installed version.

Another "writer" who cannot or does not read any instructions!

There are many works on formatting long documents in either OpenOffice or
LibreOffice; the "Writer for Students" reference is relatively brief.

PDF file at at
http://openoffice-uni.org

See the file referenced in this posting for an overview of the use of Styles
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?p=275320#p275320

This document may be helpful for those writing a book
http://documentation.openoffice.org/whitepapers/

Bruce Byfield's book, Designing with LibreOffice, also covers Apache
OpenOffice. It focuses on the use of styles and templates, mainly in Writer but
with some info on Calc, Impress, and Draw.

A PDF of the book, and/or a zip file of the chapter ODTs, can be downloaded
free from the book's website. If you prefer, you can buy a printed copy.

For Macs, there is much useful information in

If you don't like the editor you are using there are many others you can choose.

If you Google for "automatic capitalization OpenOffice" the first search
result is this:

*How do I stop OpenOffice.org from changing the first letter of a word to
uppercase?*

   1. Select Tools > AutoCorrect Options and then the Options tab.
   2. Near the top of the list, uncheck the [T] box next to "Capitalize
   first letter of every sentence".
   3. Click OK at the bottom of the dialog to apply the change.

I have also had this problem, this year was the first time ever in 29 years w/
computers. Was working w/ someone else in a rush working from home w/ out her
office equipment.

You are not alone!
Can you look through all the other places where you might have saved an earlier
version?

I now save documents and other important files in a variety of places going
along. Documents folder, desktop, specifically named folder for that type of
file, project folder etc. Messy but necessary for the way I work.

You can also set up a backup to an external hard drive/ rocket stick or dongle
etc so as to save elsewhere than your computer incase of hard drive problems.

Every time I save a document it gets a slightly different name. As an
example... name, date, v 1,2 etc. V being version for that date. Messy but
reliable.

You may have a slightly earlier version somewhere which would avoid you having
to redo everything. Can you do a general search w/ slightly different names?

You can also email versions to yourself. You will then have the file in your
email as sent & received mail boxes. Do this at the end of the day.

Good luck!
We have all been there & it is a hard learned lesson. Everyone has this story
too so don’t feel to bad just deal with it for the future.

2020-12-07 Thread Jessica moloney
Hello,

I am praying you can help me. My computer shut down on its own last night and
when I reopened open office, the auto recovery was unable to recover a very
important document that I was working on and despite me saving it numerous
times throughout my working on it, the entire thing is now gone. Please, I am
so desperate to recover this, if someone can please help me, I would greatly
appreciate it.

Thank you,

any of that palettes can help you out.

On my Windows the files for the palettes (with the extension .soc) are in
D://AppData/Roaming/OpenOffice/4/user/config

If you have your own palette back it might be useful to copy it as standard.soc.

Re: Please Could you Advise How I can solve this PLEASE

2020-11-04 Thread Alan B
Dave,

You identify parts as missing, how are you able to say this is so?

If the document opens without errors or warnings so you are able to see
"parts are missing" then the document has downloaded completely.

The missing parts may be references inside the document to parts that are
located outside the document and inaccessible to you. It is also possible
parts of the document are set to hidden and need to be unhidden to be
visible. The last possibility I can think of is change tracking. Visibility
of comments, changes and revision marks can be set in various ways so it
either looks like a "clean" document with no editing or commenting having
been done or be set to show all or a selected combination of comments,
edits, and revision marks.

The structure of a Word document file is such that if every bit of the file
does not download then Word or OpenOffice would see it as corrupted and
complain when attempting to open it. The design of file download programs
is such that, with rare exceptions, the file downloads completely and
successfully. And if it doesn't download successfully, it is very unlikely
to be recognized as a document file by the computer.

What doe you mean with downloading. Is it downloading from a Website, from

Google Drive or Dropbox or saving or opening it from a mail attachment?

Downloading is not a not part of OpenOffice functionality, but rather
from the

Operating System.

I have an urgent document to read and have this problem.

If you receive the document via email, ask the sender to send it in PDF
format.

If your immediate need is to read the document, try some other editor, such as
AbiWord or LibreOffice.

Without hands on of the document we cannot make any analysis of the problem or
its cause, and such analysis may take some time.

Because, you haven't set the *AutoCorrect* option to "*URL Recognition*"

Both should work.
By the way you can't *Cut and Paste* a website only *Copy and Paste* works.

Maybe this helps:

The standard (default) behavior for activating hyperlinks within OOo is
to use Ctrl+click. This behavior can be changed in *Tools > Options >
OpenOffice.org > Security > Options*, by deselecting the option
*Ctrl-click* required to follow hyperlinks. If clicking in your links

Already researched all possibilities for "fixes" and tried them all out, it

get through to them is impossible.

If you want me to test load your document, send a copy to my home email address
(assuming there is nothing sensitive) and I can take a peek in case it is just
something with your configuration that went bad. I have never seen this so

The fact that the doc loads is a good sign.

A quick test (of interest), is to copy some of those black lines where you
expect words to be and paste them into a regular text editor (on windows,
notepad is a common choice). This should tell you if it is just a font problem
(or similar).

Best of luck.

I don't understand what you mean by this. Complete words are offered, even
rare ones if they've been harvested from the user's documents.

If the questioner's "60minutePKG" and "60minutemassage" had both been
harvested (I've excised the spaces to allow the effect to show), typing "60m"
would show what is common between the possibilities, so just
"60minute", not either of the complete texts. S/he said that individual
suggestions appeared, which is indeed what happens in a spreadsheet.

Display of what's in common has never been my experience. For example,
I have 'accelerating' and 'acceleration' in my list, and as soon as I
type 'acc' it offers 'accelerating', not just 'accelerati'. I've often
wished it would display just what's in common. (I'm actually using LO
at the moment but my recollection is that it's the same in AOO.)

I assumed that the message was about a word-processing document. If so, if
you go to Tools > AutoCorrect > AutoCorrect Options there's a 'Word
Completion' tab that seems to give control over what word completion is
done.

I had wondered that but ruled it out, for various reasons:
o The default minimum word length is 10, so it is unlikely that entries as
short as some of the questioner's examples would be harvested.

My minimum word length is 8, I don't remember setting it to that.
Maybe hers was somehow set to a small value? Maybe unlikely.

o Only single word entries are harvested.

Good point.

o Complete suggestions are not provided: merely partial ones as far as they
are common.

I don't understand what you mean by this. Complete words are offered,
even rare ones if they've been harvested from the user's documents.

o The user would not be able to tab through suggestions, as s/he describes.

I assumed she (they) meant control-tabbing.

This facility offers possible entries as you type, taken from
existing entries in other rows in the same column. No, I don't see
any way to adjust the order of the suggestions. But yes, there is
certainly a way to suppress this facility: just go to Tools | Cell
Content > | AutoInput and toggle it off there.

If you find yourself - as it seems - often entering similar entries
in a spreadsheet column, you may wish to consider using Data Validity.
o Select a cell range - perhaps all or most of a column - and go to
Data | Validity... .

o On the Criteria tab, for Allow, select List.
o Enter your repertoire of allowable values in the Entries box.
o Select other options as desired.

Now when you move to a cell in the range to enter a value, you will
see a down-arrow to its right. Click that with the mouse and select
the particular entry you need. Note that this technique can avoid
entering slight misspellings or variations that may create errors in
your spreadsheet but can be quite difficult to spot.

I trust this helps.

See this post for a solution to your problem
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17=75066=340454=gatekeeper#p340454

The problem is, I believe, caused by Gatekeeper on the Mac.

What was the other three attempts? Writing to this list or what?
And who are you referring to when you say ”you”? There is no Apache
OpenOffice support. This list is just users helping other users. I'm one of
those users (I'm actually an ex user, but that's hopefully not very
important) and some times I ask questions and some times I answer
questions, just like most people on the list.

I prefer a hex editor over Word…

You can? That's great. Doesn't the mean that the problem is solved? I just
wonder how you could find it in the ods file. Shouldn't you rather look in
the Apache OpenOffice Calc application?

Lucky guy. I have both on my job computer and I hate both.

I miss that function.

You said you could find it (in your ods file), or did you mean something
else? Like what?

Okay, jokes aside, can you please better describe what that ”function”
actually did? I don't really understand what ”add certain lines to a total”
means. Certain lines? To a total? How? Can you give a simple example? What
is the function called in Excel?

I'm sure that if the function doesn't exist in Calc, it's possible to make
one with a macro, but I can't tell how complicated that would be unless I
have more information.

Not sure how much easier it could be made. Go to the home page of the
website; http://www.openoffice.org/ and right there in the middle of the

"I need help with my OpenOffice. Help is at hand whenever you need it."

You say "I can find that function.", but it sounds like you mean that
you cannot find the equivalent function in Calc.

Can you recall what the function might be called in Excel? A function to
"add certain lines to a total" doesn't give us much to go on, so can you
provide a more detailed description of how the function worked, or
outline the steps you took when using that function?

Delete the "1", and then ">Insert >Page Number" at the appropriate place
on the second page. The correct page number should appear on every page.

If you are in Writer, look to the bottom right where there are three

Well, maybe the problem is about file format you are using. Are you using ods
or maybe xls or xlsx?
If you are using xls or xlsx, I'd suggest you to save it as ODF Spreadsheet
(*.ods)
If you are already using ODS format then I'd suggest you to select only the
cells with content and paste them into a new spreadsheet. Save that new
spreadsheet with a different file name and test if it opens faster.
If I can't take a look at your spreasheet there's nothing more I can say.
Good luck!

OpenOffice saves the documents as zipped files, when you open the
spreadsheet OpenOffice will unzip the file which will take some time.
But this will not take 5 minutes, so I assume there could be something
else that slowdown the process. It could be the complexity of the
calculations it need to perform. If you link to an other spreadsheet it
will update (refresh) the links in your working document.

There are a few test you can do to see where the bottleneck could be.
1. Under Tools -> Cells uncheck the AutoCalculate option and see if that
speedup the saving process.
2. Under Edit -> Links you can disable the Auto Update function (only if
you have linked documents)

Once it does open up and type any more information to it and then
click Save..it takes that same length of time to save the
information.

On the community forum they want me to upload the file but I don't
want to share all of that information.  Any ideas of what else could
be wrong that I could check on my end?

Thanks for your time,
Cindy

The majority of the problems reported recently regarding running OpenOffice on
a Mac are due to the GateKeeper program.
See Q05/A05 in the
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74=89283, the Forum Mac
FAQ, for this question and solution.

2018-10-10 Thread Alan B
Ros, I don't frequently have access to Macs so please forgive if these
suggestions are off the mark.

Are you able to download other DMG files from other sites but not the
OpenOffice DMG? If yes, check if your antivirus/malware is blocking the
download.

And... if antivirus/malware is blocking the download, is the download being
attempted from the official site? https://www.openoffice.org If not using
the official site, please use it instead of the one you are using.

Help, please

2018-10-10 Thread Ros Peedle
Dear Sirs,

I am a Mac user and I need Open Office in order to complete a Government form.
However, I am quite unable to download and install it despite having tried many
different routes. I am using Chrome and it doesn't like that; I am using a Mac
which seems to be blocking the download somewhere in the system and I can't
find out how to release that. I tried to use Safari and the version I have is
too advanced so I can't do it that way!! Please can you help?

Depend on your Options set under the Tools menu.
Check your settings under Load/save
When you have set the option you find the directory of the backups
under OpenOffice -> Paths

That would be dangerous - if your document has been corrupted and the
automated backup works properly - the backup is unusable as well ...

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS make frequent backup copies.  That's the REAL answer to
your question.

I fact there are options under Tools -> Options -> Load/save
There you set the Auto Recovery time interval and to create Backups,
backups are created when you close your document always allow some
time to finish this process before you switch of your system.
