Re: [users] Basic OpenOffice Install questions
David Thanks much for your response. I will try to keep this short. My initial attempt to download OOo from the official website met with failure with an indication that the Mac PPC platform version of OOo was not available. Further investigation of other OOo pages uncovered a list of 3rd part providers of the OOo software. I found an outfit in the list called The Open Source Community stationed out of Eatonville, Washington that indicated that it could provide OOo for Mac PPC platform. I purchased and received their cd ($5.95). The Setup Guide came on that CD and it was dated 2005 (3 years old). This document provided the info on dlcompat and the dynamic libraries as well as brief info on X11. I also got some clues on OOo installation and X11 from this OOo website document link: http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/Howto_OOo_2.0_MacOSX_english.pdf Since the documentation from the vendor above is 3 years old, I have serious doubts about it being worth while to try to install the OOo software from their disk... I may have just learned a $6.00 lesson. As to the discussion on my iMac, it was not a typo. It was originally purchased with OS 9 installed. Through purchase of subsequent install CD's, I was able to upgrade it to OS X 10 and ultimately to OS X 10.3. I got to 10.4 through on-line purchase and pachage download and install. I did indeed acquire the X11 software from the 10.3 install disk. How can these files be acquired?? I don't know what 'setup guide' you are looking at, but you needn't muck about in any of the OS innards to install OpenOffice. I fear it is also quite old: since Panther [OS X 10.3] dlcompat has only been needed for outdated programs. The dynamic libraries are stored in a folder hidden from the Finder [/usr/lib] in order to prevent casual tampering from breaking the OS X installation. Here is a brief rundown on the machine I would like to install OpenOffice.org 2.0 on: Apple iMac modelPowerMac2.2 CPU TypePowerPC 750 (83.2) CPU Speed 500 MHz Memory 1 GB OS version OS X v10.4.11 X11 has been installed from a OS X 10.3 install disk. The version of X11 is somewhat confusing though. When I right-click on the X11 icon and select Get Info it tells me version 1.0 Copyright 2003. But when I activate the X11 application and type in X -version and enter, it tells me XFree86 Version 4.3.0 I am concludiing the version to be 4.3.0 Do I need to upgrade my version of X11?? If os, any suggestions on how to do so. So you say you are running Tiger [OS X 10.4] but you installed X11 from the Panther [OS X 10.3] install disk. I would say this kind of cross-versioning is generally a Bad Idea, but i also know this has to be the result of a typo: the Panther install disk did not include X11. I have to assume that you meant to say that you installed X11 from the Tiger disk, and Apple's version 1.0 of X11 is consistent with that. The 4.3.0 is the version of XFree86 that was used as a basis for Apple's X11 1.0. The immediate question you have is whether you *need* to upgrade your X11 installation. The answer to that is no. The 1.0 version is quite robust enough to run OpenOffice. In fact, it is more stable/usable than the cutting edge version of X11 included in Tiger [OS X 10.5]. Apple has made a minor upgrade available to 1.0 [1.1.3, IIRC], but it is bells-and-whistles stuff that most users never need. If you wish to install that, run the Software Update program to fetch the update. The normal process for a brand new installation would look like this: 1. Install OS X and update as desired. 2a. Users of 10.3 and 10.4 need to install X11 separately from the OS. 2b. Users of 10.5 should install the XQuartz updates over their broken X11 installation. 3. Install OpenOffice - for recent versions this is as simple as dragging the application icon into the Applications folder. Not too hard, eh? I wonder why you think you need some kinky setup guide. Re: [users] Convert text to number (and date)
2008/8/7 Cor Nouws Hi all, A little moment to ask attention for the latest version of CT2N – Convert Text To Number (and date): http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/CT2N Especially of interest for those fighting / playing / studying numbers and dates. This version includes conversion of date-strings in two modes: limited and full OOo-date conversion. The idea and first step to implement text-date conversion came from one of the users. As many other ideas came from users. By the way: really interesting to see what strange things (in my eyes) people do with numbers and formatting in spreadsheets ;-) I have the impression that few useful features extra might be possible, so don't hesitate to write... Kindest regards, Cor Hi! Nice extension. Here are some comments: The close button on the upper right corner (☒) doesn't seem to work. Nothing happens when clicking it. I'm on Ubuntu 8.04, OpenOffice.org 2.4.1. The Close button, the one with the text Close on it, works as expected. How can I help translating the extension to Swedish? Maybe off topic, but it would be nice if it was possible to convert numbers to numbers as well, such as the conversion from 20080810 → 39670 (=2008-08-10 if the cell is formatted as the ISO 8601 date format). I actually have a file with such dates. In my case I formatted the cells like -00-00 to make it look like dates, but now, a few years later, I realize that there are many advantages by converting them to real dates…

Do you mean enter **text** dy over dx=f(x)y or do you mean insert a **formula** using Math? - using Math. the content between parentheses are explanation. - There are two occurrences of the word over in what you showed us. Which one do you mean here? Since the first over is a part of Math formula (in the equation editor), so only one over left.(namely, the end of line) - - To unsubscribe, e-mail: For additional commands, e-mail:
Re: [users] Comment out?
Sorry, actually, I mean paragraphs. I apologize for it. I like peter's suggestion. Especially, the use of section with hide property(conditional hide). In this way, I can set a switch variable(a filed) in the beginning of document, then turn the wanted paragraphs into hidden section by inserting section. The visibility of sections is controled by the switch variable. Once a document has been finished, the only thing to do is turn the switch so as to hide all unnecessary text. But, even the note of OO, as a review tool, is not enough for technical document with equations, in contrast to Microsoft Word. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: For additional commands, e-mail:

I actually have a file with such dates. In my case I formatted the cells like -00-00 to make it look like dates, but now, a few years later, I realize that there are many advantages by converting them to real dates… Try: =DATE(INT(x/1);MOD(INT(x/100);100);MOD(x;100)) and then Paste Special back over the original values with Date time ticked and Formulas not ticked? I trust this helps. Well, I know how to convert them, I just thought it would be a nice addition to the TextToNumbers extension, but thanks anyway for reminding me of the MOD function. I guess I would have done it without it, which would have lead to a way longer expression… J.R. But if you work with a lot of files, let`s say 20 - 50, to be combined and you have to do that job once every 2 weeks it would be cool to find a more effective way to do it. That is why I am looking for a way to kind of automate this. The batch import was just one idea, because the files to be imported will always be in one folder and will always have the same names. I do not necessarily need all the data combined in one file, it would also be OK just to import certain columns from the original files to my main document. Is that somehow possible, maybe with a macro? Kind regards, Christian - To unsubscribe, e-mail: For additional commands, e-mail:
Re: [users] How to insert a math formula into a text frame?

Is there a way to do it in the current version of OOo? Thanks! This may depend on whether you're working in Writer or Draw. The option (Insert|Object|Formula) is greyed out in Writer's text box, but seems to work in Draw. Might explain why some say it works, some say not. XP/2.4.1, BTW. (Gets out soapbox and mutters about consistency.) Let's me clarify. When I am in OOo Writer, I can't insert a formula into a text box (created by clicking the T button in the Draw toolbar...). As you put it, the option Insert Object Formula is greyed out. Copy and paste are greyed out as well. In OOo Draw this option is enabled (i.e., it is not greyed out), but I can't group a formula with other drawings (a line, a triangle, etc.).
