I noticed today, when I had to save an .odt document into Word to send
to someone that the original .odt doc was only 29.9 KB and the resultant
Word doc was 163.5 KB. Quite a size difference.

Yes, that's because zipping the file is part of the ISO standard ODF 
format specification.  Unlike with Microsoft Office, it is possible to 
unzip that file and see exactly what it consists of, which means your 
precious data will always be accessible, so long as you have a computer 
capable of unzipping files.
