[libreoffice-website] Libreoffice.org: Developer menu heading: add links to dev resources
Hi, On May 4, 2012, Andrew Higginson added 2 pages, that are currently unpublished drafts. The 2 pages are redirector links, 1 pointing to LibreOffice's git ( http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice) and the other pointing to the function documentation (http://docs.libreoffice.org/avmedia.html). Obviously, if these submenu items were added, there would have to be a 3rd added, pointing to the current page content. Personally, I find the above pages to be useful additions. Christian pointed out that the resources pointed-to don't have any link back to the libreoffice.org site, and suggested integrating the links into the content of the current page. Anybody got any comments about this? I'm CC'ing Michael Meeks, who has a particular interest in this page. -- David Nelson -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: website+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/website/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

Re: [libreoffice-website] adding more content to the Paris conference pages
Hi Charles, We need to get the Paris Conference a permanent mention on our homepage... asap. Anybody has an idea? I can try to come up with a proposal but I suck at drawing... Thanks, -- Charles-H. Schulz I've been having a think about this, and I see 3 easy possibilities: 1) We use the top bar (where we used to have the banner for the Challenge site, and we put 2 buttons, one linking to the Conference site, and one linking to the Challenge site. 2) As an alternative to 1) above, we insert a 2-column table above the TDF Blog and Twitter widgets, and below the existing 5 links, and put in two short texts publicizing the 2 sites. For both of the above, we need 2 smallish buttons. For the Conference site, we can use a re-size of the Paris Conference 2011 button in the Conference site. For the Challenge site, we can use something based on the little piggy in a set of the challenge banners produced when the challenge was starting up. If those 2 buttons are OK for you all, I can do the re-working with Photoshop and produce the needed buttons 3) In any case, sometime back, I suggested rolling out a dedicated news section on libreoffice.org. That idea slipped into forgotten-ness after it got a somewhat guarded reception at the time. I'd suggest again rolling out that News section, where we could give a lot more room to initiatives such as these, on the LibreOffice site rather than the TDF site, which seems more logical to me What do people think? -- David Nelson -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to website+h...@global.libreoffice.org Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/website/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

Re: [libreoffice-website] Litmus to remove form the main site
Hi Christoph, :-) The Alfresco platform is installed on a LibreOffice sub-domain (both portals) and is at the service of every team in the project. The decision to grant it a subdomain was an officially voted and documented SC decision. It therefore merits its place in the LibreOffice wiki top menu alongside Pootle and various other TDF/LibreOffice resources. If you want to remove items from the top menu, we could usefully remove the ODFAuthors link: it is not a TDF resource and affirms itself as an independent project, so it doesn't really merit a place in the LibreOffice wiki menu... Let me show you my thinking, so you can follow it's rationale and thus possibly understand the different perceptions. Would you maybe like to post links to ML posts supporting what you say? Your words seem to be at odds with the true facts... Let's concentrate at this[1] thread, I just numbered the successive incidents resp. mails in temporal/thread order. 0) Pre-condition (fact): Someone (assumably you, but does not matter who for this meta-considerations) has put the Litmus link on the website. So now, it is there. 1) Sophie finds the link and requests to remove it. She gives some explanations for her request. How I read her mail: Fact: There is a Litmus link on the website. Reasonning: The link is wrong as it impairs work at the moment (or similar). Appeal: Please remove it. Self-reveal: I'm feeling in charge for Litmus on the one hand, and for informing the community about it on the other. And I'm a constructive community member and I'm taking care for good collaboration, too. I therefore want the link to be removed it but cannot do it myself (or don't want to or what ever) What she tells (me) about her relationship to the community: I care for you as a community, and I have substantial knowledge in this matter. Now, I'm asking for technical help in a community of equals. 2) K-J removes the link (presumably he accepts Sophie's reasonning) and writes a response mail. New Fact: (Wrong) link is removed. Self-reveal: I'm feeling in charge for the website and I am a constructive collaborative community member, therefore I'm taking the task. I'm helping another member. Relationship We are a collaborative community of domain experts Appeal: Please correct me if I've missunderstood something, otherwise please approve my action 3) You re-install the link without reasonning. Fact: Link is visible again. Reasonning: - none given - Self-reveal: I think, the link is ok. but also: I do not need to argue, I just (can) act Relationship (maybe a bit caricaturized): I am the boss, and you are just unimportant: what is done by the community does not bother me. I am acting from a superior position. At least, my position is superior to Sophie's and K-J's, so I can revert their actions without giving further arguments. Appeal: Please accept my superior position and stop acting against me So from this (my) perception, your behavior does not appear to support the common goal first and foremost. It rather appears mainly intended to regulate mastery, the who is in the driver's seat question. At least in my eyes, acting in this way does not look rational, neither sensible. It looks like a pure interpersonal action, revenge, bashing, fight, whatever you like to call it. Hopefully, you can follow my cartoonish explanations and see that it could give rise to my interpretation as interpersonal issue. Or at least as communicational problem. Or shall we just cut this thread short? I'm personally bored with this kind of thing. ;-) I know it's annoying but it can be helpful to clear things from time to time. If it does not help, we can leave it, of course. But I personally want to (at least) make one real attempt to try to reveal problems and to direct communication into fruitful collaboration again. Re: Fwd: [libreoffice-website] General appeal on communication style
Hi Nino, Just so history does not get twisted, the true facts are that I had originally added a link to the LibreOffice Alfresco platform in the LibreOffice wiki top menu, alongside the links to other LibO/TDF resources. Klaus-Jürgen Weghorn arbitrarily removed it. I put it back again. As regards the Litmus link, I saw there was a Litmus link in the wikt top menu so I updated LibreOffice.org site pages with links to Litmus - an act of innocent goodwill! Re: [libreoffice-website] Alfresco as a tool for l10n project...
Hi Sophie, :-) Alfresco is now being investigated/adopted/possibly adopted by Spanish and Brazilian team people, and I see that a space has also been created for German content, too. So there is indeed some uptake/interest among certain localizers. As such, I feel it does merit listing with the other available resources. Alfresco is a product with considerable potential, and I think it's too early to have any reactionary negative attitudes to it. As with the many other tools used for LibreOffice contribution, there is no *obligation* to use it if you don't want to. But that doesn't mean we have to conceal in from other contributors. Does this seem like a reasonable standpoint? Couldn't you be a little more objective about it? ;-) David Nelson -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to website+h...@libreoffice.org Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/www/website/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
Re: [libreoffice-website] Alfresco
Hi Sophie, :-) I think your response is a little brusque. At your request (in line with your orders), I've removed the link to Litmus among the QA testers' resources on the Getting Involved QA page. But I've not removed the link in the Getting Involved Web Admins page, as it is a part of the LibreOffice project's infrastructure, even if it's only under development right now. I haven't removed any links to Alfresco, because the resource is indeed currently being actively used by at least 2 localization teams (Spanish and Brazilian) and is eligible for use by other interested teams, too. Erm Perhaps we should take account of more viewpoints than just your own? ;-) David Nelson -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to website+h...@libreoffice.org Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/www/website/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

As the comma separator shows the same problems in other parts of the world as the point in your understanding, we should avoid both on the international site. 50 000 is easy to recognize by everybody. My 2 cents would be that since the language being used in the banner is English, it would be a good idea to conform to *English* conventions. The comma separator for thousands and the point/period/dot for the decimal separator is the convention in every English-speaking country in the world. And the Euro sign € is not the officially approved currency symbol by the European Union and might be not understood / wrongly formatted in other parts of the world. Therefore I prefer EUR. Read this, Bernhard: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euro_sign Or maybe the European Commission is not really worthy of serious consideration? Me, I prefer the universally-recognized euro symbol. Re: [libreoffice-website] Re: New libreoffice.org New Features and Fixes layout
Hi Matt, :-) My best advice is that right now we just need to make the present New Features and Fixes page look good with the info that it currently contains. May be a good idea to just keep it simple for now... We need something where *all* the features/fixes are covered on the same page, without the visitor having to go to different pages. We need something that is a little less bandwidth-intensive on first load - think nicely-presented thumbnails linked to enlargments. It would maybe be rational to go with the slideshow widget (see the page types dropdown list) wrapped up in some pretty CSS. For the CSS, Ivan did some styles that are incorporated into the current site CSS that you could maybe use. See this thread for info [1]. The present page really sucks, but we have not yet been able to convince any of the design guys to jump in and start re-formatting... Oh, and the last thing would be that we need it this year and not next century! :-D (let's forget the iterative, community-based approach normally recommended by the Design team for the moment and let's just get the job done quickly). Don't be shy to mail Michael directly, he's very interested in this page. My 2 cents. Re: [libreoffice-website] Re: US marketing mailing list on website
Hi, :-) I think the issue here is that other NL communities get freedom to develop content on their NL site that suits them, without interference from anyone else. But English speakers haven't had this, having to work with an English site that seems to be considered to be everyone's common property. The US community has its specific needs, as does the Canadian community. Similarly, there's genuine utility in content that is particularly designed to market and present LibreOffice to the United Kingdom community. I think the problem can be solved by setting-up separate US, Canadian and UK sites. Personally, I'd be interested to work with people like Ian Lynch on content for the UK, particularly targeting adoption by UK businesses, UK local and national government, and by the UK education system. So, I'm perfectly serious when I say that I'd like the project to now consider that there is a United Kingdom NL community, and to grant it the same freedom and independence that all the other NL communities enjoy. Therefore, I'm asking Christian to set-up a UK NL site, and I'll be approaching Florian to set-up a separate UK marketing mailing list. But of course I do not want to withhold them from this little advantage ;-) Frankly, I think it will be very easy to develop quite different content on each of those three sites, when you get down to really addressing the specific aspects and outlooks of the 3 communities. Re: [libreoffice-website] Re: US marketing mailing list on website
Hi guys, :-) @Bernhard: OK, Bernhard, I published your changes. But I think that Drew and Marc *may* be irritated about this. We have a problem. This is an English-language site, and the English-speaking communities are not getting to mold the content to the needs of *their* communities. It is effectively making English speakers second-class citizens in the project, because the NL sites get to develop their content the way they like, but the different English-speaking cultures are not getting an opportunity to communicate in a tailored manner with their particular communities and markets. IMHO, the time has come for individual English-language sub-sites for English-speaking cultures having individual needs. @Christian: I think we need to change mindset here. Remember that .us, .ca and .uk are the domain roots of those three countries. If you insist on en-us.libreoffice.org, en-ca.libreoffice.org and en-uk.libreoffice.org, you are going to considerably reduce the usefulness of the domains. People in those countries don't identify with en-us, en-ca and en-uk. This is not simply a *language* thing here. It's about prominent and distinct cultures being able to communicate with and provide information for their particular communities and markets. So it's a cultural thing and a marketing thing. I specifically want to ask for us.libreoffice.org, ca.libreoffice.org and uk.libreoffice.org. AFAIK, the SC is going to discuss the issue, so I guess there will be a decision about this.
