[WiX-users] How to check programatically that Start Menu entries for my app are present on the system (post installation testing)?

2011-12-05 Thread Robert Lee
It's a management requirement, part of anti-piracy strategy - as there is
no built-in DRM, we want to make sure the install state (including
licensing information) is there for corporate software auditors to see.
How to do it, either in C++ or C#?

Do you want to check for their existence or ensure they are there ?

You could run a repair with MsiReinstallProduct() ?
Or MsiInstallMissingComponent() if you can list the component codes that are
expected.

[WiX-users] How to add target line parameters on shortcut

2011-12-05 Thread Francois Human
Hi,

I would like to add target line parameters to my shortcut.

e.g. If I create the shortcut manually the target would read as follows:

C:\Program Files\TestApp\TestApp 1.0\Testapp.exe PARAM1 PARAM2 PARM3

With WiX I was able to create a shortcut pointing to the exe. How would I
add the parameters to the Target?

Thanks

Francois

Re: [WiX-users] Incomplete uninstall from ARP; works from full UI; possibly UAC-related

2011-12-05 Thread Simon Hoffmann
To wrap this up: some features weren't properly uninstalled. (In fact,
the empty folders left behind after installation were also still
registered as belonging to a feature of an already uninstalled
product.)

The package had two bad features:
- a completely empty one
- a conditioned feature that did nothing but copy and rename a file
(installed by another feature).

Removing both of them did the trick.

2011/11/11 David Watson dwat...@sdl.com:
I have no idea which bits will be relevant. Install logs are only really
useful in their entirety. You tend to jump about through them when analysing
 a problem.

If you finding them hard to follow you could try using the MSI log file
 viewer (C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\Bin\WiLogUtl.exe)
from the sdk, it can sometimes be helpful.

David, thanks for your interest in my issue. However, the full log is
close to 5 MB, and I wouldn't want to post that much data to a public
mailing list. Which sequences/actions would be of particular interest
 to you?

 2011/11/10 David Watson dwat...@sdl.com:
Post the full log of the failed uninstall. It should explain why it not
removing the ARP entry even if it's not obvious.

ARP uninstall will always run a basic UI, this is expected.

Subject: [WiX-users] Incomplete uninstall from ARP; works from full
 UI;possibly UAC-related

I have a problem with uninstalling a WiX 3.5-authored setup.

 On Windows 7:
 - Uninstall product via the Programs and Features dialog via select
the Uninstall option from either the toolbar above the list or from
 the context menu.

 Observations:
 - Uninstall runs with a reduced Windows Installer default UI, only
showing a progress bar and an estimate
 - No UAC prompt is shown, even though UAC is enabled
 - The uninstall seems to complete successfully (the MSI log says as
much), and all installed files are removed. However, some empty
folders remain (a lesser issue), and the entry for the program is not
removed from the list of installed programs (remains after refreshing
using F5). Regedit shows that the respective Windows Installer
registry keys for the product are still present.

Now, an attempt to install the product again will fail, because
Windows Installer probably assumes the product is still installed (log
 has UPGRADINGPRODUCTCODE set).

 Workaround:
 Either
 - Simply repeat the steps as described above. This time around, a UAC
prompt is shown, and the entry is successfully removed from the list
(and the keys from the registry).
Or do not uninstall via ARP the Uninstall option at all, but:
 - Select Change instead of Uninstall. Full setup UI is displayed
(customized WixUI_Custom UI). Select the Remove option. Uninstall
 completes successfully.

What is the difference between these two ways of uninstalling? REMOVE
is ALL in all cases. Obviously, the repeated uninstall attempt has an
MSI_LUA: Credential Request return = 0x0 log entry the first one has
not. Other than that, they both have:

 Line 64: MSI (s) (58:E0) [10:40:28:711]: MSI_LUA: Credential prompt is
not required at this point, product is managed and deployment
 compliant
 Line 112: MSI (s) (58:E0) [10:40:28:727]: MSI_LUA: Setting AdminUser
property to 1 because the product is already installed managed and
 per-machine
 Line 114: MSI (s) (58:E0) [10:40:28:727]: MSI_LUA: Setting
MsiRunningElevated property to 1 because the install is already
 running elevated.

Only the repeated attempt and the Change attempt via UI have
Executing op: ProductUnregister, the first does not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can provide log excerpts as
 needed.

Re: [WiX-users] How to check programatically that Start Menu entries for my app are present on the system (post installation testing)?

2011-12-05 Thread Wilson, Phil
If it's just the product's install state that's needed, I would have thought
that using an Msi API such as MsiQueryProductState (ProductCode) might be more
useful than just seeing if someshortcuts are there. If you really need to see
shortcuts that's just a programming task that involves enumerating the content
of Environment.SpecialFolder.StartMenu and seeing if your shortcuts are there.

It's a management requirement, part of anti-piracy strategy - as there is
no built-in DRM, we want to make sure the install state (including
licensing information) is there for corporate software auditors to see.
How to do it, either in C++ or C#?
