[wp-testers] Menu editing - page not fully loading
Time to delurk again. I've been working with the Alpha on a couple of test sites. One is a small one with just a couple of posts, on my standard web hosting, the other is a copy of my live site (over 4,000 posts), running on MAMP. On rev 13845, the menu editing page works fine on the small site, but fails to complete loading on the larger one. It stops rendering after the Add custom links box - no page footer, and the Page Options link doesn't work. I've looked at the source of the rendered pages, which was, err, interesting. In the (hidden) div for Add an Existing Post, it appears to be loading not just post titles (which could lead to a moderately large page), but the whole content of the post, which will rapidly lead to an insanely large page (the working site comes to over 300kb, the non-working one dies without rendering the DIV in question. These points, when made clearly and politely, have been largely ignored. I'm not really surprised that people are now becoming frustrated and describing the new write page layout as terrible. Okay, let me not ignore it, and state as I have in half a dozen other emails that I do not think having to scroll to enter a category is a reduction is the overall usability of the page. I think Andrew's email describes well what the (apparently) silent majority of people have expressed in their feedback, that the primary thing they want to do on the write page is *write*. Categories, tags, etc are things that are generally written after the post (and we'll even be able to auto-suggest them based on the post content in the future, removing even more friction), as it's difficult to know how to tag something before it exists. All design is a series of tradeoffs. The tradeoff here is that an assumed larger set of both power and novice users look at the new admin screen and say ooh, less clutter, fewer distractions, easier uploading while a smaller set says where are my categories? and then scrolls down two clicks and sees them. The second group either learns to scroll down a bit after writing a post, or installs a plugin to tailor their experience to their suiting. I haven't mentioned categories specifically in any post - my main disagreement with the new layout is the loss of the ability to customise it for the way *I* work. I've no wish to force my own particular requirements on anyone else, and WP has previously allowed me the flexibility to set things up in a way that suits me. I like being able to make more use of the width of my screen, but I can understand that not everyone wants that. I know you have a personal antipathy to options, and I can understand that an excess of options can lead to confusion, weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth (the Day Job involves technical support...). What I'm getting round to is that I do appreciate the efforts being made to make WP better. And yes, I will persevere with using 2.5. Can't guarantee I'm ever going to like it, though. Most feedback on the changes have been positive, So its either people like it, They dont care, or they dont complain. Or that the people with objections made them some time ago, in detail, and found that their concerns fell on deaf ears, so stopped talking about it. To be fair, HappyCog( http://www.happycog.com/ ) did put a fair ammount of effort into the new design, And based it around a lot of user research, Put together some wireframe mockups of a better interface, And piece by piece, the Devs have done a great job of implementing the changes, and improving WP in so many other ways at the same time. Ah yes, user research. Rather like the interface changes Microsoft put in Office 2007. I believe the idea is to make software easier to use *for people who've never seen it before* while making it harder for people who make more advanced use of it. The parallel is remarkably close: Office (pre 2007) allowed users to have as many customised toolbars as they wanted, and to put them where they wanted, without having to do anything advanced. Office 2007 makes this impossible without add-ons WP (pre 2.5) allows users to drag and drop items on the sidebar to put them in the order that makes sense for them (including plugin items). WP 2.5 removes almost everything from the sidebar, and does not allow reordering of the items it pushes below the fold. This might be easier for people with a particular workflow, but makes it *harder* for others. WP 2.5 also includes the ability for Plugins to overrule the Admin theme all together, So i'd expect to see a few spinoffs which improve upon the current design, If the changes are popular enough, then i'm sure Devs would consider pulling those changes into the core. Once you've used the 2.5 admin for awhile, Its much comfier, if you've just changed over from the old interface, then its going to take some time to get your grips on it, As expected. I've been using it. I still think the split of the menu into two with some bits over to the right is illogical and arbitrary. With wide screens it's even more annoying. Not annoying enough to be unusable, but still not good. All i'm trying to say, Is give it a chance before writing it off entirely. There'll allways be people who do *not* want to change, I don't object to change per se, I object to functionality being removed in the name of making things easier. There'll be people claiming the old interface is better, and *nothing* will change their minds, In the specific case of the Write page, and for my specific purposes, the old interface is superior. Easy configuration is good. Those 3 groups of people are expected, Theres people who absolutely hate the old interface, Theres people who liked it, but found it cumbersome, or felt it was time for a change, and theres people who loved it. And people who were neutral about it, because it just worked, and therefore blended into the background. Point is, nothing much has changed, its just the people may have switched group. The Write page has changed enormously. So, If someone doesnt like a current design choice, Voice it, get it known, Who knows, Fluid width might be back in 2.5.1 Fluid width is less of an issue for me than the mangling of the Write page, but I think it should be there - let the user choose how wide the interface is. This is where web-based apps generally score. Perhaps a solution for the Write page would be a basic, fixed- layout, minimal page for beginners and a more advanced, configurable page for more experienced users (is it my imagination, or did WP used to do that?). On 27 Mar 2008, at 22:43, Matt Mullenweg wrote: The true test of the release is how usage and adoption of WordPress changes after 2.5 (what people do), especially after people have had a few days to settle into the new feel of things, which I truly believe is a step forward. Much of the negative feedback is coming from people who've been working with 2.5 over weeks or even months... We didn't always make the safest choices, but we made the best ones. Some things will be uncomfortable to people who have been using WP for years, but I'm confident over time there'll be less and less friction. Best choices is always going to be a matter of opinion and perspective. Experience suggests that people can get used to things that are awkward and uncomfortable to use. This doesn't mean that the changes that they're adapting to are for the better. Finally, we do have a history of doing things that everyone hated or screamed bloody murder at the time, and were honestly painful to get feedback for, but ended up being good long-term decisions, like introducing the theme system or WYSIWYG. WYSIWYG is optional. Those of us who either don't like it, or have no use for it, can easily disable it. This is consistent with WP being nicely configurable to suit the user's needs. The fixed vs fluid width is easily addressed by a plugin. But the change to the write page makes no sense to me, and as you've seen from the comments here, I'm not alone. Making changes that disturb people isn't necessarily bad, but taking away functionality and choices is. In 2.3.3, at top right of the Dashboard is a clearly visible, underlined link My Profile. This is good - it's obviously a link, and it describes what it does. In 2.5, this wording is gone. Access to your profile is by clicking your name. As the name is not underlined, and isn't significantly distinguished from the Howdy, it's not at all obvious that it's a link at all, much less what it leads to. This is not good. RE: [wp-testers] 2.3 and loooooong running queries
Now there's a funny thing. I had *exactly* the same thing happen to me yesterday. It wasn't breaking anybody else's site on my host's server[1], but it was using the maximum number of connections, which made my site die. I have a remarkably similar log, which I'll provide if it's of any help. I also imported tags from UTW. The only tagging plugins I have are Click Tags and Tag Managing Thing, neither of which (AFAIK) have any interaction with displayed pages. In my case, it appeared to be dying while looking at a single image page generated by WPG2. I don't entirely understand the query, but it looked like it was trying to do something taggy with every word in the description of the photograph. After a friendly exchange of emails with Dreamhost support, I've disabled WPG2 for the time being, and the site is back up. I was going to look into this at the weekend, when I'll have more time, but since Handy's had the same issue, I thought it was worth mentioning it. [1] Ah, I see we're both on Dreamhost... Seemed to go smoothly enough. I imported my UTW tags and went native for tagging. Twice now I've managed to clobber MySQL with endless queries that use up my max_user_connections. I'm on shared hosting and my host is not amused... They sent me a snippet of the query, but it must be one that's programmatically built as I sure can't turn anything like it up with grep. The query is below for reference (check those joins and the where clause!). I've yet to determine if this is core or plugin related. This evening, when it clunked on me I did have two tagging plugins enabled: * Advanced Tag Entry: http://www.poplarware.com/tagplugin.html * WP 2.3 Related Posts: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-23-related-posts-plugin/ I didn't write any posts today, so that would presumably excuse the first. But the second doesn't seem to generate anything like what's below either (as far as I can tell). I monitored the mysql processlist most of the day and never saw any spikes, so I'm a bit bemused as to what triggers this in the first place. Any suggestions on how best to track this down? Works, and might just do the job for now - but personally, I'd like to have less on the posting page. Insertion and deletion of tags from a simple drop-down is all that I need there. Adding a new tag can be done by typing it into the existing box, so that's simple. A management page where tags can be deleted from the db, renamed, merged, etc would be useful. As I mentioned in at least one of my previous posts, I needed more functionality for defining tags than the core WP implementation of tags allowed for on the post editing screen. In my case, it was specifically in order to handle multi-lingual tags (e.g. need to be able to enter the tag's slug directly rather than generating from the tag name, which contains language tags). Someone else also requested the ability to choose tags from ones previously used on other posts. So, I've created the first pass at an Advanced Tag Entry plugin, which adds a section to post edit screens. As I often string several together, not all their translations have spaces in. In fact, hardly any do. Most are of the form '' with the surrounding colons being enough to ensure they are only translated when I want them to. This all works as expected in 2.0.x. In 2.1, I find that translation does not happen unless there are spaces around the string to be translated. So a smiley at the beginning of a comment tends not to be translated, two in a row don't get translated, and those inserted straight after words or punctuation don't get translated. I found this: http://trac.wordpress.org/ticket/2444 in trac - I'm not a coder, so I have little chance of working out what it means, but it looks like it might be related. Is this behaviour expected[1] or is it something that can be changed And on the subject of smilies, the traditional way of using WP-Grins (http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/smilies/) doesn't seem doable any more. I've looked at the code, but don't have any idea where to start with finding where to put the call. I did manage to put the function call into a new block on the sidebar, but that's not as neat as running them above the post form. Suggestions would be useful - I know a lot of people like clickable smilies [1] Or by design as Microsoft like to say about annoying features ;-) Les Bessant [EMAIL PROTECTED] Losing it[1] - http://lcb.me.uk My flickr pictures - http://flickr.com/photos/lesbessant/ ___ wp-testers mailing list wp-testers@lists.automattic.com http://lists.automattic.com/mailman/listinfo/wp-testers
RE: [wp-testers] Change of behaviour of smilie translations andWP-Grins
Yes, that seems to be what it's doing. I'll do some more tests to confirm. But this will break things for anyone who puts two smilies in a row if there are no spaces in their definitions. I can see an issue here for a lot of general users who'd either have to Google RDF[1], or wouldn't care what it is. [1] I did. During this change we also fixed ticket #2 about smilies not showing if they were the very first thing in a post/comment. I tried a lot of different variations but there were always smilies not transformed that you wanted transformed or smiley-like things that were transformed when you didn't want them to. The current setting gave me the least false positives and false negatives of the settings I tried. In theory the rule I implemented makes something a smiley if it meets 2 of the following conditions (if you see different behavior, you've found a bug): - At the start of a line - At the end of a line - Starts with a whitespace - Ends with a whitespace Cheers, Bas Bosman (Nazgul) -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Lloyd Budd Sent: dinsdag 16 januari 2007 21:29 To: wp-testers@lists.automattic.com Subject: Re: [wp-testers] Change of behaviour of smilie translations andWP-Grins On 1/16/07, Les Bessant [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Found this behaviour with the betas (it may precede them, but I didn't look too closely before). ___ wp-testers mailing list wp-testers@lists.automattic.com http://lists.automattic.com/mailman/listinfo/wp-testers

I almost forgot... One neat thing... I realized that with this script and the relative backups it makes of the files and the db, it should be really easy to restore the files to a different directory, then restore the SQLDump to a different database/database name and then change the wp-config in the new directory to point at that new database. SO, in short, you can easily create throw away blogs that you can use to repeatedly test upgrading 2.0.x to 2.1. I'm gonna try this later this weekend. I'll let you know if I come up with an instruction set. Now that is something I'd love to play with :) Les ___ wp-testers mailing list wp-testers@lists.automattic.com http://lists.automattic.com/mailman/listinfo/wp-testers
RE: [wp-testers] Upgrade your WP sites in 5 Seconds
Took life in hands[1] and gave it a try. Only did it on one site so far, and it worked with almost frightening speed. Blog happily running 2.0.6, with no apparent problems so far. That's running on Dreamhost. My knowledge of Bash is minimal, but the code made some kind of sense to me. Thanks for improving on something that was already very useful. [1] OK, I backed up manually and downloaded the backup first :) Les Bessant [EMAIL PROTECTED] Losing it[1] - http://lcb.me.uk My flickr pictures - http://flickr.com/photos/lesbessant/ -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:wp-testers- [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Brian Layman Sent: 05 January 2007 17:17 To: wp-testers@lists.automattic.com Subject: [wp-testers] Upgrade your WP sites in 5 Seconds Since 2.0.6 is released, I've posted my upgrade script on my site. Would any of you testers care to take a look at it and let me know if you see anything that will be unworkable for a *nix hosted site? As for forbidden HTML elements such as script and style, I understand that these are being stripped to protect you from malicious authors but I also think that it's going a little overboard. Something of an understatement? The admin (and in a very large number of sites, that's going to be the only user anyway) should be able to decide what is and is not allowed, if there is going to be tag stripping going on. Guaranteed to generate a lot of questions in the forums, too. While having options (even default settings) to make WP easier for less experienced people, those who not only don't know any HTML but don't want to is (generally) a good idea, it's important not to do this at the expense of the users who *do* know what they're doing.
