Re: [WSG] Windows on a Mac
This is probably off topic, if you want to discuss off line, I'm happy to help. I do this daily, on three different Macs. FWIW, I used to be an executive at Microsoft, but use Macs in my daily life. I retreat to Windows only as needed. I use Parallels, although others report good success with VMWare's Fusion. The answer to all your questions is yes, and then some. You can run windows and mac programs side by side on the same desktop or switch environments on the fly if you prefer a now I'm here, ok, now I'm there experience (easier on my head), or even choose the boot route. The Windows environment isn't some emulator, it's the real deal. I write can programs in VS, run Office, get viruses, everything. Fortunately it's all confined to that world. As I said, I do this every day, follow up off line if you want more detailed answers as this really has nothing to do with Web Standards. My current situation has forced me to consider upgrading sooner than expected, so I have a few questions about the Windows environment on the new Macs. Perhaps the most amazing thing in all of this is Target¹s willingness to continue this fight into court. Aside from all the stunningly bad publicity of a major company standing up to fight a group of seemingly defenseless blind people, and the ridiculously poor example they set for all corporations by worrying more about form over function, is the sheer economic stupidity As almost anyone here in this group would tell you, the work required to make their site simply not offensive to the blind (e.g. just adding alt tags) would probably cost them a tiny fraction of the legal bills. Re: [WSG] Out of Office AutoReply: WSG Digest
You know, I belong to perhaps two dozen email lists, and this one and one other are the only ones plagued with the oof (out of office) notice problem. Yahoo groups, in particular seem to have this well under control. I am on something like ten Yahoo groups, with thousands of members across them, and I never once have seen an oof on them. Re: [WSG] problem with 1 and 1 wordpress blog
I am using Wordpress to power my entire site (http://clwill.com), static pages, integrated blog, everything, and it is hosted by 1and1. It works wonderfully. Just install WP locally on your LAMP setup, pick a theme that you like, and start fiddling. If you create pages in WP, they are static, posts are part of the blog. If your theme includes a home.php that's the front page. If you change your header.php and or footer.php in your theme, you can change the look of the whole site. To get an idea about how this works, just open up the theme files and poke around. It's really not that complicated, most themes consist of only about a dozen files, all with very logical names (comment.php, sidebar.php, etc.). And PHP is not rocket science, you'll get the hang of it in just a hour or so of poking around. There are a bazillion WP templates out there (check out http://themes.wordpress.net for a few hundred...) from which to draw ideas. Using WP as your CMS system to build your whole site is a really clean, simple solution. I'm a huge fan of the concept. As for a local LAMP setup, I am using XAMPP (as was suggested) and it works great. HTH, Chris -Original Message- From: dwain Subject: Re: [WSG] problem with 1 and 1 wordpress blog As far as incorporating the blog into your existing web site, why not the other way around? Styles are in the admin screen - Dashboard - Presentation - Theme Editor. You can make changes and save them there. I would suggest making another copy of your blog to test changes on first, preferably local on your PC using apache friend's xampp (Apache/MySql/Php). i'll have to set up a local lamp setup to test this on my system. thanks for the help and advise. *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ***
Re: [WSG] problem with 1 and 1 wordpress blog
As I said, none if this us anywhere near as hard as you're making it. Go into the theme's directory and open up the files. Change just a couple of small things and see how it changes things. You'll quickly see that this isn't complex. Dive right in. See below: From: dwain [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [WSG] problem with 1 and 1 wordpress blog i guess i can change the images in the header in the css. If you can do that, you're not that far away from creating your own theme. i'm not sure how to add the static pages unless i do away with the 1 and 1 blog and install wordpress and start from scratch. You'll be much happier with 2.x than 1.5. If only for the security fixes alone. i could never get wordpress to install on xampp, in fact, i had problems with it not finding the data base i created. Not sure why you couldn't find the database (did you change the wp-config file as the directions say)? the only concern i have is if i create pages with the 2.1.2 version of wp if 2.1.3 will accept the pages. The only differences between 2.1.2 and 2.1.3 are some security fixes. You have no reason to worry. but I might give joomla a stab as well. RE: [WSG] Template Review[Final]
I'm afraid I agree completely with Bill, on almost every point. See below: From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Open Vision Subject: Re: [WSG] Template Review[Final] Sorry, but I still see a mess. Maybe worse than before as far as layout is concerned. Text size, depending on how you have it set on your monitor is all over the place. Columns aren't even (as a graphic designer this is a pet peeve). And you have words underlined that aren't links. Misleading at the very least. Just try ctrl-+ or ctrl-a couple of times in your browser and see how badly the page behaves. Columns overlap, spill out all over the place, ugh... Spelling and punctuation is faulty too: Using javascript and AJAX behaviour is added to enhance user experience for a web applications, in compliance with web standards Better written as; Javascript and AJAX behavior (oh, we don't use the u here) is added to enhance user experience for Web aplications, in compliance with Web standards. While I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt on behaviour, there are problems. Like Bushidodeep.com, Founded in 1996 offers... should be at least Bushidodeep.com, founded in 1996, offers... But that leads to the more important point that you offer Web Standards solutions emphasizing unique visual design on a decidedly not that great a design... certainly it doesn't offer a unique and stunning interface as later proclaimed. Personally, I think this is a wasted page. As I said before, if clients want to know about these things they can ask. If not you're just putting out useless and boring information. This is the most important point. This is like the skills section on a resume - that is, completely worthless. It's a laundry list of buzz words. Do you go to a mechanic for your car because they have the latest Hunter 9500 Spin Balancer or The Best Snap-On Tools, or because they carefully follow all OSHA regulations? No, you go there because they can service YOUR car, or perhaps they were recommended by your friend, or because they have testimonials from trustworthy sources. Show of hands - is there anyone on this list, or anyone working in web design, who DOESN'T work with all the listed programs? You need to showcase your work. Screen shots. Links to customers. Sample pages. Stunning Interfaces. Testimonials from happy customers. What can you do for me? Don't bore me with how the sausage is made... And I still have a problem with the half ribbon. To me it looks like something is missing and it doesn't add to the look of the page. Agree completely. Would be different if there was another part of the ribbon at the top of the page, perhaps... Finally, what in the world does meditaion have to do with Web design? Again, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on that one (don't know why, but...) but I'm trying to understand a validation drop down selector. Huh? Don't mean to be rude, just trying to play the devil's advocate here. If I see these things clients will. And if you confuse them they'll go find someone else. - Original Message - From: CK mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To: wsg@webstandardsgroup.org Sent: Monday, April 30, 2007 4:09 PM Subject: [WSG] Template Review[Final] http://working.bushidodeep.com/dom_site/template_03.php Hi, Please check this for an strange behavior in IE. __ CK *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] *** No virus found in this incoming message. RE: [WSG] Use of Enter key to naviagte between form fields
It's not my client... it is Nick's. I'm just saying that for decades, heavy data entry programs have used enter to move between fields, and yes, shift-enter to move back. If they are converting an existing app to use a browser, the client may well prefer to change the app, not the 100 users... which users may NEVER use the browser/computer for anything other than this app. -Original Message- From: Christian Montoya Subject: Re: [WSG] Use of Enter key to naviagte between form fields Yes, but the convention in browsers is still to use the tab key. RE: [WSG] Use of Enter key to naviagte between form fields
At the risk of taking this completely OT, I might ask those of you who are incredulous of the use of the enter key to move between fields to take a look at the number keypad way over on the right hand side of a full-sized keyboard. Notice the enter key there? Imagine yourself keying in numbers all day and ask yourself if the tab key (at the exact opposite end of the keyboard) or the enter key (merely a pinky finger away) is the most efficient way to move between fields... Finally, imagine flipping through the pile of data to enter with your left hand, keying with your right hand, and you have your answer: a very efficient (albeit stunningly boring) way to work. -Original Message- From: Nick Roper Subject: Re: [WSG] Use of Enter key to naviagte between form fields As Chris points out, the use of the Enter key is quite common in data-centric applications (which this is) and the users are used to using the Enter key for that purpose. *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ***
