It seems like there's a delay of about 5 minutes before your reply shows

I'm talking about the 3 day delay between when I emailed to

Yes, it should get appended. The CRON job for processing incoming mails runs
every 5-15minutes (or so). Three days sounds peculiar. Will check.

I downloaded the mbox file associated with bug 263, and my email is there.

But it does not show up on the bug webpage:

http://bugs.x2go.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=263

Perhaps that is the way it is supposed to work? If so, it is
inconvenient, because I would have to download the mbox file for any
bug that I wanted to look at all the comments for. It would be better
if everything were visible on the web page.

Because I can see it on the web page (and already could back when you first
 complained about it being invisible).

If that is the one you are talking about, my guess is that you have a
caching proxy somewhere between you and the bugs.x2go.org server, or your
 browser's cache/refresh settings are b0rked.

Yes, that is the one I am talking about. I do not see how I could
possibly have a caching proxy in there, since I certainly did not
configure anything like that.

And I tried hitting refresh several times and it did not make a difference.

Check the modification date of the web page for comparison, here, I'm seeing
 Montag, 9. Dezember 2013 08:48:01 when I right-click and select page
information (or whatever that option might be called in English) in
 Firefox.

Just a minute ago the web page stopped working for me. Maybe something
Mike Gabriel did?

Now http://bugs.x2go.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=263 shows me only this:

Well, I don't know where you are and who your provider is.
If you're at a public library, a university, a company, chances are the IT
 department installed a caching proxy.
Also, some providers add caching proxies, especially when you're using a
 mobile internet connection.

I am using a cable modem connection. As I said, I do not see how any
caching proxy could be in there. I would certainly have noticed it on
other web pages if the ISP was somehow screwing with my http packets.

I've seen Firefox have hiccups like that before. Try:
 - Shift-Reload (keep the shift button pressed down while clicking on the
reload button - note that you need to click, Ctrl-R + Shift doesn't work any
 more)
 - Ctrl-Reload (same as above, with Ctrl instead of Shift, will most likely
open a new tab or browser window)
 - Ctrl-Shift-Reload (as above, with both pressed down)
 - Switching to Porn Mode a.k.a. Private Browsing (Shift-Ctrl-P) and
 loading the page there
 - Creating a new, additional Firefox user profile
 - Using a different browser

I am actually using Google Chrome at the moment, but Internet Explorer
and Firefox both show the same web page.

[X2Go-Dev] Bug#263: Windows x2go-client versions after 3.99.2 frequently hang while trying to resume sessions

2013-12-08 Thread John Williams
I believe I have been experiencing the same bug as reported by Edouard
Villeneuve evillene...@pldagroup.com

One important piece of information is that the bug does not appear in
x2goclient 3.99.2.1 (3.99.2.2 about box).

The bug appears to have been introduced between 3.99.2.1 and
3.99.3.1-pre1, since all versions from 3.99.3.1-pre1 and later have
the bug. Also, it does NOT appear to be a consequence of the new
pulseaudio version, since the old interims version has the same issue.

Windows client:
3.99.2.1 filename (3.99.2.2 about box): works
3.99.3.1-pre1_interims (old pulseaudio): hangs
4.0.0.3: hangs
4.0.0.3_interims (old pulseaudio): hangs
4.0.1.0-pre02 : hangs
4.0.1.2 : hangs

This was also discussed on the x2go-user email list in a thread
started by Sebastian Flothow sebastian.flothow at gip.com with the
subject X2Go client 4.0.0 can't resume certain sessions

Well, I have been using version 3.99.2.1 for months now because of the
bug that was introduced right after that version that causes the
Windows x2goclient to frequently hang when trying to resume sessions.

I tested 4.0.1.2 and it has the same problem. So that would be a
regression that goes all the way back to just after 3.99.2.1

Since this bug was discussed on the x2go-user list in October (thread

I am using Chromium on linux, not Chrome. I have occasionally had

I'd be interested to know if you're using Chromium from the stock Debian

Also, could you check what happens in Chromium when you try to access the

It may be I am seeing similar crashes to you. When I said Xorg locked
up, I only meant that nothing in my x2go session would respond (not
only chromium, but all mouse clicks were ignored). It may very well be
that VcXsrv on the client is crashing, since I was able to recover by
quitting and restarting x2go. I think I may even have had to use
Windows task manager to kill VcXsrv, but I don't remember (it has been
a while since it last happened).

I am using the Chromium x86_64 package from the Archlinux extra

I never use proxy settings, so I was unsure what exactly you wanted me
to test. I just accessed Chromium:

and I was shown this message in a new tab:

I switched from Firefox to Chromium months ago because of this issue.

It has been reported that two more workarounds are possible:

- adding the render=0 and defer=2 options to the AgentExtraOptions

performance);

- adding the plugins.force.wmode = transparent or the
plugins.force.wmode = opaque option to firefox in the about:config

Everything works great at first, short clips, like Adobe Flash
animated
advertisements with sound, run rather smooth, but longer videos on youtube
experience a stuck image effect that only goes away when moving the mouse
over the area where the video plays (this helps for a few seconds, then you
have to repeat the procedure), also, the sound starts to get choppy.
BUT: This *might* be due to something weird in my LAN config or due to the
client options I chose. It sure needs further testing and verification
before it can be considered a bug.

Have you tried disabling (UNchecking) Use SSH port forwarding to
tunnel sound system connections through firewalls?

I have found that all versions of Windows x2goclient after 3.01-13,
including the latest 3.99.1.0 (preview2), have a problem with
tunneling sound through firewalls. It will intermittently lock up.
Sometimes it works fine for a while, but eventually the sound always
locks up. Disabling tunneling fixes that issue for me.

For a special version (redist-server/3.5.0.10) use:

For the latest stuff in Git use:

I used the args HEAD server and it worked great! Thanks for updating it.

Hence, my question. Is someone working on fixing the nx-libs build files?

Unless I am doing something wrong, fakeroot make DESTDIR=/some/path
install leads to installation of the libsbinaries to usr/X11R6 and
not all components required for x2goagent (incl. x2goagent wrapper
 itself) are installed anyway.

To work around that, I am using install command for all the libs
and binaries with the use of the precompiled DEB packages as a template.

A second point: in Arch linux, the X2Go packages (incl. nx-libs) are in
AUR (user-contributed repository), which does not support so called
split packages (i.e. I cannot compile the nx-libs tar ball and
create several packages in one go like you do in Debian) [1].

So at the moment, the semi-automatic build process has to download and
compile major part of nx-libs repeatedly for each of the dependency
(nxcomp: requires nx-x11; nxagent: requires nx-x11, nxcomp,
nxcompext, ..., nx-x11; etc...). It works, nonetheless it is slow and
 inefficient.

Yes, the makefile currently distributed with nx-libs (redistributed)
is broken as you say. It sounds like someone is working on it (see
post from Michael Kromer).

As for the recompilation difficulty, I made an Archlinux package that
installs everything from the nx-libs tarball at once, rather than
splitting it into a lot of separate packages.

[X2Go-Dev] nx-libs breaks with libpng 1.5.x

Archlinux just upgraded libpng 1.4.x to 1.5.8, and it appears to have
broken nx-libs. With libpng 1.4.8, I was able to build nx-libs 3.5.0.9
and successfully run it with x2goserver, but with libpng 1.5.8, when I
try to build nx-libs it gets to compiling Pgn.cpp and fails with
errors:

g++ -c -O3 -fno-rtti -fno-exceptions -I../nx-X11/exports/include
-Wno-deprecated -fPIC -DIN_ADDR_T=in_addr_t -DVERSION=\3.5.0\

/usr/include/png.h:720:16: error: forward declaration of ‘png_info

On the libpng homepage, I found this note

http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/libpng.html

The libpng 1.5.x series continues the evolution of the libpng API,
finally hiding the contents of the venerable and hoary png_struct and
png_info data structures inside private (i.e., non-installed) header
files. Instead of direct struct-access, applications should be using
the various png_get_xxx() and png_set_xxx() accessor functions, which
have existed for almost as long as libpng itself. (Apps that compiled
against libpng 1.4 without warnings about deprecated features should
happily compile against 1.5, too.)

I don't see any warnings from my previous build logs with libpng
1.4.8, but since the compiler was given the option -Wno-deprecated
I'm not sure that the warnings would have shown up anyway.

And it does appear that the Pgn.cpp functions DecompressPngXY() are
trying to access the png_info struct, which is now private in libpng
1.5.8.

What do you think is the best way to fix this issue? Would an upstream
bug report to the NX folks be likely to accomplish anything? I'm not
sure how big a job it will be to patch all of the code in nx-libs that
attempts to access png_info or png_struct.

By the way, there is a workaround for this problem. In my case, I have
a 1920x1200 monitor connected to my Windows computer, but I do not
want to use x2go client in fullscreen mode. I want the x2go window to
be as big as it can be without covering up the Windows taskbar.

So what I do is set a custom resolution of 1910x1140. Then when x2go
client opens the window, it is too small to display a 1910x1140
desktop (which is what x2go client starts up). The easy way to see the
problem is to open a terminal window, then hit the fullscreen icon at
the top right of the terminal window that you just opened. Then hold
down return until the terminal window fills up. Then hit return a
couple more times, and type something. You will find that you command
line prompt is below the bottom of the x2go client window, and you
cannot see what you are typing.

Anyway, the workaround is to immediately resize the x2go window larger
after you first log on. In my case, it is easy -- I just click the
fullscreen icon in the top-right of the windows x2go client window.

1) nx-libs must still be built against the nx-X11 source

2) no one has successfully built and used the nx-libs with x2goserver
from the tarballs at http://code.x2go.org/releases/source/

then I guess there currently does not exist a stable release of
x2goserver that can be built from source tarballs.

In that case, perhaps I can assist with getting a stable source
tarball release together, but I will need some assistance.

Am I correct that the only stable release of x2goserver (and
dependencies) that currently exists is in the Debian squeeze x2go
repository, and for x2goagent to be stable it must be used with the
nx-libs from the squeeze/heuler repository?

If that is correct, than who built the nx-libs that are in the
squeeze/heuler repository? I would like to get a summary of how those
were built, and from what sources.

Because there are a lot of bugs that I have seen that do not result in

Zimbra is a heavy AJAX application.  I don't know if the application
John Williams is using is also heavily AJAX driven - John

The problem occurs most often for me when a gmail tab was open. I
think gmail uses AJAX, so AJAX may be the crux of the problem. The
problem
NEVER occurs for me with x2goclient 3.01-13. It frequently occurs with
3.99 when a gmail tab is open in firefox.

Slightly different than the problem you described is that for me,
while it is USUALLY limited to firefox freezing while the other
applications continue to work, sometimes it can get into a state where
the other applications freeze as well. But not always. And suspending
the session from 3.99 and installing 3.01-13 and resuming the session
eliminates the freezes. So it is definitely 3.99 that is at the root
of the problem.

[X2go-Dev] nice, ionice with x2go?

2011-06-27 Thread John Williams
Has anyone experimented with 'nice' or 'ionice' to improve x2go
responsiveness? If so, what x2go processes might benefit?

The linux server that I am running x2goserver on sometimes has high
loads, both CPU and disk IO. However, there should be plenty of
resources left, since never are all of the CPU cores maxed out, and
the root filesystem is running on a fast SSD. Nevertheless, sometimes
x2go responsivity will go to almost nothing for a few seconds.

So, I was thinking to try x2go with 'nice -n -10' and 'ionice -c 2 -n
0' or even 'ionice -c 1', but I am not sure how to go about that. Does
there exist anywhere a short description of the jobs that x2go starts
when it is invoked, and what each does? Currently I see:

x2gocleansessions (root, PPID 0)
x2goagent (user, PPID 1)
x2goruncommand (user, PPID 0)
ssh (.x2go) (user, PPID 0)
sshfs (.x2go) (user, PPID 0)

but I am not sure which are important to responsivity, and which
scripts started which processes (so I can edit the scripts to insert
'nice' commands).

Gnome 3 requires a hw support from the video card. Before the upgrade,
have you successfully used some compositing window manager through x2go
(compiz, metacity with compositing enabled)? I doubt so...

Up until now, I have not heard any news that Gnome 3 would provide a
fallback, which would be visually similar to the normal Gnome 3.
(Canonical has such a plan for its Unity - to be released in autumn
 2011.)

This is by the way the reason, why I am in a search for a GNOME
 replacement...

No, I did not use a compositing window manager, just the default Gnome
2 settings which did work fine with x2go.

The fallback with Gnome 3 is not at all similar to normal Gnome.
It is not really a desktop environment at all -- seems like just a
window manager.

I have never tried KDE before, but I tried it after having this
problem. I could not stand it, and it had some compatibility problems
(it would not work properly with gnome-terminal -- the windows kept
auto-shrinking themselves).

Then I tried LXDE, and that works great with x2go and all my usual
programs. I also like the feel of it, and it seems fast (KDE felt slow
to me). So it looks like I am switching to LXDE.

[X2go-dev] x2go with Gnome 3 ?

2011-05-02 Thread John Williams
Has anyone successfully run x2goserver(-one) with Gnome 3 ?

I just upgraded my Archlinux system to Gnome 3, and x2goserver-one
stopped working with Gnome. It gave a message about hardware not being
suitable and it is reverting to gnome fallback. Unfortunately, it
seems it was a one-time message, but I cannot get the message back,
otherwise I would post the exact error message. What happens is that I
end up with an x2go session with a plain desktop and a couple menus of
apps, and that is all.

If no one has gotten x2go working with Gnome 3, can anyone suggest
where I need to start looking to solve the problem? I don't really
know where to start. I already tried /usr/bin/gnome-session as a
custom command from the x2go client, but that made no difference, and
now I am stuck on what to look at to troubleshoot the problem.

 Any ideas?

Try the 3.01-13 windows client. I also tried the 3.01-18 windows
client (with built-in X-server, not vcxsrv), and sound was broken. But
sound works in -13. In -18, sound was so broken that it was causing

[X2go-dev] Windows client 3.01-18, VcXsrv 1.9.4.1

2011-02-22 Thread John Williams
I've been using windows client 3.01-13 for a couple months, and it
works reasonably well, but I have experienced two consistent problems
-- apparently random disappearance of the mouse pointer (fixed by
quitting x2go and starting again), and some problems with windows
updates, especially with gnome-terminal windows when there is a long
scroll job, sometimes the windows do not update (waving the mouse
cursor in front of the window usually causes it to update).

I decided to test the recent 3.01-18 client and VcXsrv 1.9.4.1. First
I just tried 3.01-18 with the built-in xserver. I only tested that for
a short time, but one problem I found was that sound was broken. Sound
works fine when I go back to 3.01-13, but sound does not work at all
with 3.01-18. VLC complains about the ALSA driver and locks-up, adobe
flashplayer 64-bit prerelease square hangs. Both apparently related
to the broken sound.

Moving on, I tried 3.01-18 with VcXsrv 1.9.4.1 for a few hours, mostly
web browsing. I did not have the cursor disappear, but I did have a
couple serious issues. One was when the screen was not redrawn
properly when I dragged a Firefox window around. It seemed random -- I
was working fine for about an hour, but suddenly when I tried dragging
a firefox window, it left trails everywhere, totally munging the
screen. I tried dragging other windows around, and even quitting and
restarting x2go, but nothing seemed to be able to redraw the screen
properly after that. So I started a new session, and that worked for a
while, but then it locked up completely, and I had to kill the
session.

Is any of this behavior known? If not, what can I do to aid in
debugging? With the exception of broken sound (which was repeatable),
the other problems seemed random.
