External FreeType build problem

2003-12-09 Thread Grzegorz Nieweglowski
I have trouble with a fix that appeared somewhere between 4.3.99.15
and 4.3.99.16 (and is still present in 4.3.99.901). I've browsed the
changelogs and there was something that was supposed to help XFree86
build with external freetype libraries, but... well, on my config it
did exactly the opposite, I think. Making World with

#define HasFreetype2 YES
#define BuildFreetype2Library NO

in my xc/config/cf/host.def fails in xc/lib/font/FreeType/ on ftfuncs.c.
Seems as those freetype include definitions used in there newer got
declared and gcc complains #include expects FILENAME or FILENAME.

In previous releases, up to (and including) 4.3.99.14 using

#define HasFreetype2 YES
#define BuildFreetype2Library NO

allowed me to compile XFree86 using a system-wide installed
freetype2-2.1.5. But it's no longer possible. So... am I missing
something, or is it a bug?

I'm not sure if this a XFree86 bug or if just the include file is
missing in the freetype2-devel package.

s3 trio64, color depth problem (see also bug #465)

2003-12-09 Thread steven mestdagh
hi,

as explained in bug #465, support for the s3 trio64 v2/dx/gx was ported
from 3.3.6. now, i've installed the snapshot 4.3.99.901 to try it (on a
p200 mmx, 64 mb of ram, slackware 8.1, kernel 2.4.23)
small disclaimer: i am by no means a developer, i just wanted to try
this new s3 driver so i can finally use XFree86 v4.x instead of 3.3.6 on
this computer, and i hope my feedback is of any use to you.

i can use color depth of 8 bits without problems, but when i try 16
bits, i just get a blank screen (doesn't exit with failure).
it claims i have insufficient memory for the 1280x1024 or 1024x768
modes. it detects i have 2048kb of video ram, which is indeed not enough
(1280x1024x16=2560kb necessary) but it should be sufficient to give
1024x768 at least. this all used to work under 3.3.6 (even 1280x1024!)
sometimes i also get a screen with a vertical stripe of any color while
switching between modes using ctrl-alt-+/- (tried that twice, it locks
my system completely).
log follows below (while trying 1024x768x16).
one other remark: in the card list of the xf86config script, the video
chip name s3 trio64 v2/dx/gx and numbers s3 86C775/86C785 are not
linked to the s3 driver, even though they are supported in this new
version.

regards,
steven.

maybe try depth 15 rather than 16... as I recall some old cards could
only do one or the other. I'm no expert though.

to all troublemaking files.

I looked at the 4.3.99.15-4.3.99.16.diff.bz2 patch. The idea behind that
patch was correct, removing clutter and really trying to push freetype
references out of the local tree, replacing '#include foo' with
'#include FT_FOO'. But I did noticed something else: there really
shouldn't be ANY need for me to add my own include: See, the patch
always added a

#include ft2build.h

And my /usr/include/ft2build.h looks like this:

#ifndef __FT2_BUILD_UNIX_H__
#define __FT2_BUILD_UNIX_H__
#include freetype/config/ftheader.h
#endif /* __FT2_BUILD_UNIX_H__ */

So it should automatically include the file freetype/config/ftheader.h.
Unless __FT2_BUILD_UNIX_H__ was already defined.

*Or* the compiler directive '#include ft2build.h' wasn't picking up the
/usr/include/ft2build.h file...

So I checked the access time on /usr/include/ft2build.h...

...and I was right. Nothing had accessed it.

My conclusion: I'm using gcc-3.2.3. And that is probably the key to the
whole mess. Newer releases of gcc treat the '-I' command line options
a bit differently now, the include directories are searched in
a different order than they would have been searched with earlier
versions of gcc. And this bad, bad thing that happens when you try to
use an external freetype is that gcc (at least my gcc) picks some
includes from /usr/include/freetype2, and some from xc/extras/freetype2.

I found that I really don't even need any patches. All I have to do is
remove all ft2build.h files from the xc tree and it will build nicely.
So it is obviously something related to the order in which my gcc picks
up header files. Because no-one else reported this, I guess it's
a gcc-version-incompatibility thing.

But that's the way it goes with newer tools, for example twm won't
compile with my flex-2.5.31. Compilation fails with

stdout: In function `yylex':
stdout:837: error: `yy_prev_more_offset' undeclared (first use in this
function)
stdout:837: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
stdout:837: error: for each function it appears in.)

not that I care, I don't need twm, but I think that xfree86 developers
really could update their devel tools, some of us users are maybe using
more up-to-date tools and XFree86 just won't compile for us :/

RE: Cannot connect to X Server

2003-12-09 Thread Raymond Jennings
That's odd...

Try xinit and see if xterm can connect...if that doesn't work, try xdm, and
if that doesn't work, just run the X server raw to verify that X works.

If X refuses to start up raw (with no clients), then there is a more serious
problem. Cannot connect usually means that the X server can't be accessed.
See if X can at least run (you can probably terminate it with
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. I've used this dozens of times)

If X can't be accessed, you might want to make sure your DISPLAY environment
variable is set.

If X dies, startx can't connect to it.

XServer kills console

2003-12-09 Thread David Gmez
Hi all,

I'm launching an Xserver from the console, with the 'X' binary. After that
i use another console to launch some applications: xterm, a window manager,
xeyes... When the last application dies, the X server doesn't die because
it hasn't been launched from xinit, but the console drops dead, and i
only can access my server remotely. A process list from the remote login
shows me that there is no X, but my console keyboard still is dead :(.

By the way, i'm using XFree86 4.3.0.

cheers,

extracted the source tarball on top of an older one, some files

The next question is, is '-I/usr/include -I/usr/include/freetype2'

Re: XFree86 4.4.0 RC1

2003-12-09 Thread lindsay . haigh
I have experienced a number of build problems on Solaris 2.5.1 x86. Most
of these I believe would be problems on any system that does not provide an
implementation of snprintf. Below are patches that enable 4.4.0 RC1 to
build on our system. Many of them are reversals of changes that were made
since 4.3.0. I don't know what the reasons for these changes were, so the
author(s) of these changes may want to review the patches to see if they
are appropriate or if some other changes are needed to fix this. The jmp
changes are ones that I also had to make for 4.3.0. I think the
replacement code I just got from the 4.2.0 or 4.2.1 versions, so quite
possibly will have some effect on other systems.

In case it makes a difference, the changes between my host.def and the
supplied xfree86.def are also included here. Note also that I have
disabled BuildGlxExt since I could not build with this for 4.3.0. I know
of one other person who had the same problem with Solaris 8. I will retest
with #define BuildGlxExt NO commented out in the next day and
post the results to the list.

I am happy to test building on Solaris 2.5.1 x86 for any changes that are
required. I have not tried running XFree86 yet, but suspect that I may
have to make similar changes to those I had to make to 4.3.0 to get it to
run. I will also provide these details in a separate post if I have any
troubles.

Lindsay Haigh

Dear Raymond

Thanks for your guidancexterm failed but xdm works ..

startx on text login cannot yet start X Server due to not being able to
close previously started X Server.

Raymond Jennings wrote:

That's odd...

Try xinit and see if xterm can connect...if that doesn't work, try
xdm, and if that doesn't work, just run the X server raw to verify
that X works.

If X refuses to start up raw (with no clients), then there is a more
serious problem. Cannot connect usually means that the X server can't
be accessed. See if X can at least run (you can probably terminate it
with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. I've used this dozens of times)

If X can't be accessed, you might want to make sure your DISPLAY
environment variable is set.

If X dies, startx can't connect to it.

Thanks for the reply. My monitor section already specifies the scan

  I'm running XFree86 release included in Mandrake 9.2 (4.3.0 9 May

I have also tried adding a ModeLine for 1280x1024 generated by gtf.

Thanks,

You need to enter the hsync and vrefresh ranges for your monitor in the

[XFree86] Strange Radeon 9200 SE problem

2003-12-09 Thread Arnaud Boudou
Hello

My platform is an AMD Duron 750 with 384 MB RAM. I'm using the
development snapshot 4.3.99.901, with a 2.6.0-test11 kernel

I have a strange performance behavior since I changed my ATI Radeon 7500
(64 MB DDR) with an ATI Radeon 9200 SE (64 MB DDR).

XFree config : see below

Radeon 7500Radeon 9200 SE
glxgears1070 fps 570 fps
Quake 3 Arena 1.32b* about 50 fps about 30 fps
Serious Sam (config 1)** (1) about 25 fps
Serious Sam (config 2)*** (2) about 17 fps
KDE OpenGL Screensaversruns smoothly doesn't run smoothly
* High Quality settings, 800x600, Demo four
** Medium Quality settings, 800x600, Demo suburbs (I use the Icculus port)
*** Medium Quality settings, 1024x768, Demo suburbs
(1) I've didn't benchmark, but framerate was worse than Radeon 7500
(2) I've didn't benchmark, but framerate was better than Radeon 7500
So I wonder if there's not a problem with the DRI implementation for
Radeon 9200 SE

XF86Config :
  Subsection Display

AGPMode is 2X in the BIOS, and AGP Fast Write is disabled in the BIOS
(ASUS A7Pro motherboard with a VIA KT133 chipset)

The Radeon 9200 SE chip id is 0x5964

[XFree86] X errors w/ new gateway BIOS

2003-12-09 Thread Donald G. Knecht

It doesnt look like gateway will do anything to help
usso would some kind developer consider

Looking into a possible solution/patch?

The laptop uses the intel i830 chip and before the bios
upgrade, XF86 v4.3 worked fine.

Now with the new v36.01.00 bios, X cannot reclaim the stolen
memory, I think the address have moved.

I can provide kernel messages from before and after the
upgrade, but I only have current, i.e. post upgrade,

X logfiles

BTW, this has happened to several gateway solo 1450 users,
so we know it is related to bios upgrade.

Thank You,

[XFree86] GNOME will not start?

2003-12-09 Thread Richard Bohne

Sir/Madam,

I am a newbie (and not a programmer)running
Linux 9on a new Dell Pentium computer. It has worked fine for several
weeks. Yesterday I went to the RHN site and downloaded approx. 34 errata updates
and 14 package updates. I am not a paying customer so the package updates
downloads were designated 'pending' (waiting for available time to download, I
guess). I don't know if they were downloaded by the time I shut down the pc at
the end of the day.

This morning the desktop program would not start
and I had to reboot several times just to get to the shell. I have attached the
xfree86 log file as instructed in the original error message, which I hope will
be of help to solve my problem.

Also, when I reboot now, the last lines to
displayare the following:

 Red Hat Linux release 9
(Shrike)
 Kernel 2.4.20-20.9 on an i686
 400SC login: /etc/X11/prefdm: line 1: GNOME:
command not found

I did have control of the shell at this point
andwas ablelog on. I used smbclient to copy the XFree86 log file to
another Windows pc on the network.

If I cannot go forward in solving this
problemfrom here, is there a way to restore the system to where it was
before I downloaded from RHN?

Thank you for any help or suggestions you may
have.

Best regards,

Re: [XFree86] startx error

2003-12-09 Thread Keith Tang
It's a file created when x windows is started. It gives that error message
if you type startx in a terminal while xwindows is running. The file can
also be left in the /tmp directory if xwindows crashes.

If xwindows is not really running and that error is displayed just delete
the file.

rm -f /tmp/.X0-lock

You may have to be root to delete it. Then try the startx again.

Re: [XFree86] startx error

2003-12-09 Thread Panther Wyvern
Also remember that if a graphical login manager (like xdm, kdm, gdm, wdm and
the like) is being used, the xserver *is* running and you need to kill that
display manager if you want to start X from the command line.

On Tuesday 09 December 2003 09:52 am, Keith Tang stepped up to the podium,
took a deep breath and intoned:

also be left in the /tmp directory if xwindows crashes.

If xwindows is not really running and that error is displayed just delete

[XFree86] [Radeon 9000] Trouble with external monitor

2003-12-09 Thread EK4F
Hello,

I've been trying plenty of ways to deal with the following problem but
I can't find a way to solve it, therefore you guys are my last hope :-)

So here it is: I just bought a Dell Latitude D600 laptop with a
1024x768-capable screen, equipped with an ATI Radeon 9000 graphic card.

I also own a Sony CPD-E430 19´´ CRT monitor.

My OS is Mandrake Linux 9.2.

At work, I prefer of course to use my 19´´ monitor so I plugged the
laptop to it. And here comes my problem: there is an external output on
my CRT monitor, but it remains at 1024x768 while I would like to get up
to 1280x1024 (note however that the frequency is usually (depending on
my tests) set up to 85 Hz whereas it is only 60 Hz-equivalent on LCD).

So I would like to get a better display, available with this CRT, say
1280x1024 at 90 Hz, when I plug the laptop to the CRT.

Of course, I read the Radeon man page and tried to use these cloning
possibilities but I nevertheless can´t succeed in having my display
work properly. The best I got was indeed 1280x1024 at 90 Hz when
launching the gdm session manager, but then I got a strange thing under
Gnome: the background was 1280x1024 but the available part was only
1024x768 starting from the upper left corner (smells like virtual
screen I guess but I wasn´t able to fix this).

My XF86Config-4 file follows, together with the log file for my current
configuration (1024x768 on both displays, 85Hz on the CRT).

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help me,

Cheers

  Ek4f

[XFree86] mouse question

2003-12-09 Thread Steve Smith
I would like to configure my laptop to use multiple mouse
input pointers so I can use either a mini-mouse or the track
pad depending on what is plugged in.

Is this possible?

Is there an example config file somewhere I could look at?

Thanks

[XFree86] Trouble running XFree86 on FreeBSD 5.1

2003-12-09 Thread Barnes, John
I've tried several things includeing a simple xf86cfg. My X is linked to
XFree86.

Everything I do just gives me the failure to open /dev/io for extended I/O

I am running this on a Dell Optiplex GX110 with an Intell 83810E board and
having a built in
i810E graphics adapter.

Any assistance you could provide would be helpful

P.S. I downloaded a fresh version of XFree86 4.3.0 and built it hoping to
get the binary for the
i810 server, but it looks like that has all changed and separate drivers are
loaded into XFree86
as dynamically loadable modules. Please help.

Thanks,

[XFree86] Does XFree86 work with Chips 65545?

2003-12-09 Thread
Hi, I'm new to XFree86 and am trying to get it to work with a Chips Technology
65545. According to the documentation it should work, but when I do startx it just
goes to a blank screen. I have to cycle power on my machine to get out of it. Is
there anyone out there who's been able to get it to work with this video card that can
confirm that it does in fact work?

Any help is much appreciated (I'm getting frustrated). I've attached my log and
config files.

Thanks alot!

[XFree86] RE: Trouble running XFree86 on FreeBSD 5.1

2003-12-09 Thread Barnes, John
All,

I found the answer in the group archives. I had BSD set for maximum
security and that restricts access to /dev/io.

Thanks!

John Barnes

Subject: Trouble running XFree86 on FreeBSD 5.1

I've tried several things includeing a simple xf86cfg. My X is linked to
 XFree86.

Everything I do just gives me the failure to open /dev/io for extended I/O

I am running this on a Dell Optiplex GX110 with an Intell 83810E board and
 having a built in
 i810E graphics adapter.

Any assistance you could provide would be helpful

P.S. I downloaded a fresh version of XFree86 4.3.0 and built it hoping to
 get the binary for the
i810 server, but it looks like that has all changed and separate drivers
 are loaded into XFree86
as dynamically loadable modules. Please help.

 Thanks,

RE: [XFree86] Does XFree86 work with Chips 65545?

2003-12-09 Thread
I just tried a different video card with a Chips 65530 and it doesn't work either
(same issues). Does anyone know if the Chips driver for XFree86 is broken??

Thanks,
Mark

Subject: [XFree86] Does XFree86 work with Chips 65545?

Hi, I'm new to XFree86 and am trying to get it to work with a Chips Technology
65545. According to the documentation it should work, but when I do startx it just
goes to a blank screen. I have to cycle power on my machine to get out of it. Is
there anyone out there who's been able to get it to work with this video card that can
confirm that it does in fact work?brbrAny help is much appreciated (I'm getting
frustrated). I've attached my log and config files.brbrThanks

2003-12-09 Thread J.C. Le Scao
Good evening,

My system was running fine but after a problem I had to reboot it. But
it restarted in console mode not in X. And when I type startx I got an
error and X refuses to start. Informations are provided in the
Xfree86.0.log which is included in this message.

I will appreciate your help,

Best regards

Re: [XFree86] Problems using XFree86 and RedHat 7.3.2

2003-12-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
From your logfile:

(II) ATI(0): My Monitor: Using hsync value of 31.50 kHz [*]

Unless you own one of these dreaded single-frequency monitors, you may
specify a range of frequencies, e.g. 25-60.
But first read the manual of your monitor, please!
[*]: That's why you see that many hsync out of range messages, I think.

HTH, wij
