What relevant notification channels was this sent to? Obviously there
was some breakdown, since we didn't get notified through those channels.

atkbd.c: This is an XFree86 bug. It shouldn't access hardware directly.

This happens on 4.3.0 also, and is due to the X server directly
bit banging the keyboard controller to set the repeat rate. If
you look at the code, it first tries to use the new kernel ioctl,
then a fallback, then finally it does bitbanging if the previous
methods fail.

The kernel people believe that it should not ever directly access
the hardware, and that it should only use the ioctl, and if the
ioctl isn't available in your kernel (perhaps your kernel is very
very ancient), then X should not set the repeat rate at all.

The question then is: Why is the ioctl not working?

I am currently investigating this matter myself, and there are a
few possibilities that could be happening:

1) Compile time problem: The kernel headers on the machine that
X is being compiled on, do not have the KDKBDRATE ioctl
present, and so the code to use that ioctl does not get
   compiled in.

or

2) The KDKBDRATE ioctl stuff gets built in, but at runtime the
ioctl is failing for some reason or another, thus the ioport
bitbanging occurs, and can totally hang the machine according
   to kernel folk.

If anyone has any other possibilities, feel free to share. I've
written a small debugging patch to put into a future build in
order to peek into what's going on, but haven't gotten it into
test builds yet. Not an uber-high priority item however, so
it'll take a week or two probably for a test build to get out
there and get some feedback from people seeing this problem.

Memory already used?

2004-02-08 Thread Martin MOKREJ
Hi,
I'm a bit playing around with my comp and finally figured out why on one
host I did not get framebuffer on console running - the VESA kernel module
wasn't compiled into kernel. So now I have framebuffer console, but X don't
start anymore. They used to work with radeon module and dri, but the log
doesn't show anything interresting.

Fatal server error:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0

So I tried vesa module and they do come up after some flashes of the
screen and there is some suspicious WW message:
VESA(0): Failed to setup write-combining range
What's that? Could that be a reason why X don't come up with radeon module
at all?

dmesg(1) shows:
Linux agpgart interface v0.100 (c) Dave Jones
radeon: no version for struct_module found: kernel tainted.
radeon: no version magic, tainting kernel.
[drm] Initialized radeon 1.10.0 20020828 on minor 0: ATI Radeon RV280 9200
mtrr: 0xd000,0x800 overlaps existing 0xd000,0x100

Full logs are at:
http://www.natur.cuni.cz/~mmokrejs/lspci.txt.gz
http://www.natur.cuni.cz/~mmokrejs/XFree86.0.log.gz

These errors I get regardless the fact agpgart/radeon kernel modules are
loaded. Could the problem be caused by the 1:0:1 device unrecognized (the
AGP card has 1:0:0 and 1:0:1 address)?

Thanks

Re: Newbie question, difference between offscreen and onscreen image formats?

2004-02-08 Thread Suhaib Chishtie
Sent: Saturday, February 07, 2004 6:29 PM
Subject: Re: Newbie question, difference between offscreen and onscreen
image formats?

The image formats registered via xf86XVScreenInit are ones that
are exported to the clients. The ones registered via
xf86XVRegisterOffscreenImages are for internal use only. The
idea being that they are the hardware's native overlay format or
formats that can be exposed to other parts of the server such as
a module which uses V4L. Reasons why some formats would be
exposed as client XvImages while they wouldn't be exposed as
 OffscreenImages could be:

   * The XvImage formats aren't implemented via the overlay, but
with some texture or blit mechanism.

   * The XvImage formats, though using the overlay, aren't the native
hardware format and require CPU reformating on the copy.

   * There are hardware or software complications related to other
devices bus mastering data into those overlay formats.

   * Simply an oversight, or somebody just didn't get around to
adding them, or didn't have a way to adequetly test them.

Thanks for the explaination.

I know chiip and tech 69000/69030 supports both YUV and RGB overlays. So I
guess, all the formats should also be registered as offscreen formats. Any
idea what else needs to be changed? Like which functions get called to
set/start/stop/capture overlays.

Or should I contact one of the chips driver's developer?

[Fonts] freetype module sometimes gets font height (descent?) wrong

Try once with freetype and once with xtt loaded:

emacs -fn

With freetype it looks like double-spaced. With xtt it's ok.

This is with current cvs, 4.3 and probably before.

[Fonts] font-related crash

2004-02-08 Thread Jørn Villesen Christensen
Hi there

I run a SuSE 8.2 distribution, but because of video driver (dri)
problems, I compiled and installed XFree from source
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.3.0/source/
and seems to work fine.

But I have a problem with my fonts. If I try to select certain fonts
(not all), the application (e.g. xfontsel) crashes and prints following
message:

X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for
operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 45 (X_OpenFont)
  Value in failed request: 0x35d
Serial number of failed request: 1535
Current serial number in output stream: 1536

I know that similar bugs have been reported earlier, but I could not get
an anser from them... Can anyone help?

One thing to note is that OpenOffice v1.1 runs fine and gladly displays
all the fonts!

Thanks...

[XFree86] glxgears and cpu utilization funny...

Hello
I've got a intel440bx with a Radeon7500 rv200 chip , running x4.3, on
kernel 2.6. System is built from source entirely.
One strange thing I noticed is that when I run glxgears in a small
window say 2x2 inch, cpu utilization jumps above 70%.
But when I maximise the window, cpu utilization drops to 1-2%. I can see
this clearly in gkrellm.
I thought it should be the reverse.
what gives??

I'm running the Radeon in agp2x mode.

When the card has to draw less pixels, a larger percentage of the time
is spent sending commands from the CPU to the card. When the window is
tiny, the card is drawing fewer pixels, but the CPU has to send the same
 number of commands per frame.

Der ATI-Treiber auf der Suse Page ( fglrx 3.7.0-25.i586 , km_fglrx

Open Gl vendor string : Mesa projekt

Open GL version string : 1.3 Mesa 4.0.4

in der XF86Config hab ich bei module Load dri hinzugefügt.
Wie bekomme ich den 3D Treiber von ATI zum laufen ?

2004-02-08 Thread Mark Vojkovich
It looks like you are missing alot of modules. eg:

/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/i810_drv.a
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/input/mouse_drv.a
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libexmod.a
etc...

Perhaps you have an incomplete XFree86 installation?

Mark.

[XFree86] Video error on Nvidia

2004-02-08 Thread Sandy Fort
Here is a copy of the error in the log file. I seem to have a lot of
problems with this. My brother tried to update his Mandrake from 9.2 to
9.2.1 and had the same problem. Since I have no graphical user interface,
what do I need to do to get X up and working correctly? I am having to use
my wife's computer until I am able to fix mine. Reply to this e-mail
address.

Re: [XFree86] ATI Radeon 9200SE, DVI output, black screen every

2004-02-08 Thread Alex Deucher
As I said 4.3.0 did not handle 9200 DVI ports correctly. Either of the
snapshots should work fine. The DRI ones would provide the best 3d
support. The DRI snapshots are pretty hassle free and only require
replacing a few binaries:

read the snapshot section.

Great! Do you happen to know whether or not the Radeon 9100 DVI
handling is proper in 4.3.0? I have the choice between the two, and
would like to keep my system hassle-free (e.g. using precompiled
packages rather than compiling from source where possible).

In general, which Radeon would offer the best 2d/3d performance when
used with the open source drivers and the DVI output?

Thanks Alex,

I did understand that on your first message. I was asking about the
Radeon 9100, but thanks anyway, I already have my answer: 9100 works
great with DVI output on 4.3.0, and is a hands-down better performer
than any of the other radeons I have tried: 7200 (analog only), 7000
(DVI didn't work at all), 9200SE (DVI was flaky; see previous posts in
this thread for answer to that).

Performance:

7000 (DVI): didn't work at all
7200 (analog): 50 fps glxgears @ 1280x1024
9200SE (DVI): 38 fps glxgears @ 1280x1024 (when it worked)
9100 (DVI): 124 fps glxgears @1280x1024 (flawless!)

I include this info only for future generations perusing list archives.

Thanks,
Chad

I've got Xfree86 4.3 installed on a Titanium Powerbook with Mac OS 10.2.8. I installed
it using Fink Commander, after first removing Apple X11.

Now when I start an application the windows don't open by themselves. Instead I get a
small bar which appears at the top left of the screen. Then I click on the screen
somewhere and that's where the window appears.

Not much of a problem compared to others, but I have to do half a dozen clicks
whenever Gimp opens! So if anyone understands what the problem is and can help I'd
appreciate it.

Thanks

Campbell Farquhar

[XFree86] fatal error

2004-02-08 Thread Raphael Peters

Ladies and Gentlemen,

after installing the Nvidia-drivers NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.src.rpm and
NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191.i386.rpm I couldn´t get back to my X11 desktop. I
got an error-message which I didn´t understand, ´cause I´m totally new
to Linux.

My system: Mandrake Linux 9.2, AthlonXP 2200+ on Via KT266a, MSI
GeForce4 Ti4200 4x AGP

As an attachement I sent the XFree log file.

In case of an answer, could you use simple english or maybe you have
some german-speaking folks out there (whereever it is...:)

[XFree86] difference

2004-02-08 Thread Marcin Gogowski
hi,
i've a question: what is the difference between XF86_S3V and xfree 4.3
compared to the s3 virge 86c385 card?
i've the Compaq DeskPro 4000 which has the virge gx 86c385 graphics card and when I'm
using the 3.3.6 server everything is ok, but when Im trying to run x
with the 4.3 my desktop is messed up.
i tried to ask You several months ago, but nobody helped me, so maybe this
time I will have a luck.
it is very importand to my, because I often work on my server which has the card.
bye

ps:
i have tried all the options from manual without result

ps2:
if there is a way to get at least 72 hz with VESA mode PLEASE give me an hint
how to do it.

[XFree86] DGA with XFree 4.3 and Voodoo3?

2004-02-08 Thread Jon Niehof
So far I haven't been able to get DGA working with any
version of X 4.x so I figured now was as good a time
as any to ask...

When I use any program that uses DGA, my screen goes
black (but not into powersave) and nothing displays.
All other functions of the program work (e.g. sound,
control, etc.)

I'm at a complete loss here and have been unable to
find anyone else with this problem.

XF86 4.3.0, installed from binary tarballs on
xfree86.org
Voodoo3 2000 AGP card

(excessive information dump follows)

Output from dga program (timestamped march of 2003,
unlike most of the rest of my X4.3 files--this may be
an old version, but manpage says 4.3):

ViRGE GX trouble (was Re: [XFree86] difference)

 hi,
i've a question: what is the difference between XF86_S3V and xfree 4.3
compared to the s3 virge 86c385 card?
i've the Compaq DeskPro 4000 which has the virge gx 86c385 graphics card and when I'm
using the 3.3.6 server everything is ok, but when Im trying to run x
with the 4.3 my desktop is messed up.
i tried to ask You several months ago, but nobody helped me, so maybe this
time I will have a luck.
it is very importand to my, because I often work on my server which has the card.
 bye

 ps:
i have tried all the options from manual without result

 ps2:
if there is a way to get at least 72 hz with VESA mode PLEASE give me an hint
 how to do it.

Would you describe how the desktop is messed up? That would help us
understand what you are seeing.

Does the noaccel option in the driver section make the problem go
away? Can you post a log file (/var/log/XFree86.0.log) somewhere, for a
run which you describe the desktop behavior for?

The S3V server was one of the earlier virge drivers, with the s3virge
driver in 4.x being a fairly large rewrite of that and the virge support
in the SVGA driver from 3.3.6. Very little feedback has come in for
ViRGE GX, so it sounds like we still have some trouble there.
