thank you for the investigation. It proves that we are not to blame.
It remains to see what should be done about it. Disabling the offending
function by default for all future doesn't seem to be a good idea as
the information retreived thru this function may be helpful when people
send in their logs with their bug reports.
I'd therefore suggest to enable it and provide information on the
web and in the man page how the hang can be avoided if somebody
 encounters it.

Egbert,

We could leave the option in, but enable it by default, so that this
information is displayed, and allow people to turn it off if it hangs.

That might be better.

[XFree86] VIA KM266

 Hi,

I'm thinking about buying a SK41G Shuttle which come with a VIA KM266

find if this card is supported by XFree86. Does anyone have one of this
and were you able to use it ?

it too has VIA KM266 and VIA savage-3 built in running
at 8mb allocation. Mandrake 9 supports it. I have
tried RedHat 9, sad to say, it failed in RH7 and also
in RH 9. But in Mandrake 9 it does. Go for Mandrake
9.2
their better cause they have yet to be infected with
the BGates syndrome. PROFIT PROFIT PROFIT PROFIT

[XFree86] Please help: using any new kernels, xserver won't start

2004-02-24 Thread Jim Thomas
Hi there,

I'm running RedHat Enterprise Edition and am trying to change my kernel
to facilitate some networking issues. I've been frustrated by the
xserver not being able to boot when using the networking kernel, so I've
tried with a plain vanilla kernel and the same thing happens (see
error msg and logfile below). When I boot to the original redhat kernel
in grub, everything works fine. I haven't changed anything about the X
configuration that came with the original distribution. Please Help!

Here's the error message I get when the system attempts to start the
graphical login screen:

I cannot start the X server (your graphical interface). It is
likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view
the X server output to diagnose the problem?
Then it gives me the first few lines of the logfile up until

   (==) Using config file: /etc/X11/XF86Config

and asks if I want to run the configuration tool, which just runs for a
minute and then the error message come up again. Then the whole process
starts over.

but I didn't touched in anyway neither X nor anything concerned.
I just killed X and poweroff'ed.
What's going on?

Your first problem appears to be that the version of XFree86 included with
winlinux2003 is too old to know about your nVidia video card. You should be
using XFree86 4.3.0 or possibly try a (quite stable) 4.4.0 pre-release.

Next it appears these files are not available in your install. While you don't
actually need these extensions, it indicates that you likely have other problems
with your system. You may be able to reinstall the XFree86 packages (rpm, .deb,
whatever) that included them.

Re: [XFree86] Xinerama support

2004-02-24 Thread Mark Vojkovich
You are asking to have separate root window backgrounds in
Xinerama mode? The Xinerama implementation doesn't allow that.
Basically, it advertises one root window, so when a client renders
to the root window it has to get duplicated on all the individual
screens. I suppose you could fake different images by piecing together
smaller images along screen boundaries to make a single large quilt
to set as the background of the single large root window.

Mark.

and were you able to use it ?

I've got that same box, running Debian sid, and can't get the
savage driver to work with 4.3.0. The vesa driver works well,
though.

Don't expect stellar performance. With the proper flags, movies
run fine under mplayer. Since I don't play action games, I can't
say how 2D games would be, and I won't even pretend to play 3D
games.

A quiet system gives me 280FPS in glxgears, and moving the mouse
around alot drops it 25FPS.

[XFree86] S3 Virge video card

2004-02-24 Thread Eddie

Feb.24th 2004 11:05pm

 Hello there;

Ever since I installed this S3 Virge
PCI video card(325 model with 4mb) no matter what resolution I use, usually
800x600 or 1024x768 when I move within Windows 95(or now 98SE)on this P166 based
computer with 64mb ram,I see these little dots, the size of a pixel or so left
behind when I open windows or close them.Under Windows 98SE,I allowed it to
install the proper drivers but have since installed the 1997 drivers I was using
when running Windows 95b.I have changed the refresh rate from 46,to 60 tried the
"optimum" and adapter default options ,all with similar dotty results.Any
information regarding this would be appreciated.

Thank
you,Eddie Methot

There is no longer a need to run vesa for the kn400 (the lcd issue was
found by Johannes Specht last week). There is a working driver in
current cvs, which i am using on an (older) debian-branches 4.3. There
will be a few short howtos for getting via in a complete debian xfree86
(which is what i have been using for a while) or as a seperate package
(need to decently look into debscripts, creating control and such
manually is going to be a tad hairy :)) on unichrome.sf.net soon.

Could you post a note to the list when that occurs?

Just send us the XFree86Config(-4) file (with my distro it's in /etc/X11), and
the XFree86.0.log file (with my distro in /var/log), and we'll see if we can
find a solution.

You are asking to have separate root window backgrounds in
Xinerama mode? The Xinerama implementation doesn't allow that.
Basically, it advertises one root window, so when a client renders
to the root window it has to get duplicated on all the individual
screens. I suppose you could fake different images by piecing
together smaller images along screen boundaries to make a single large
quilt to set as the background of the single large root window.

That's what I did lately but I had the choice between writing a script
that would change the background automatically (less annoying) or
disable xinerama. I disabled it :)

That's strange because Nvidia tool can actually do it. You have a big
desktop but you can set per screen wallpaper.
