display text instead of X logo

2004-07-13 Thread Jason Kim
hi folks,

I'm playing with X server. Built-in X screensaver displays X logo using
DrawLogo(). Is there any way to display text instead of logo?
I tried but with no vain. always X crash :-)

Anybody knows how to write text by X server itself? I think there is a
way like DrawLogo() does.

any idea?

Thanks.

Re: device driver - Kernel X XFree86 - USB - distribution

2004-07-13 Thread Edgard Lima
Hi Juliusz,

Yes, I'm planning to develop only for Linux Fedora Core 1 and 2 (kernels 2.4
and 2.6 respectively).

So, are you saying that if I develop a Input Core driver (Serial and USB) it
is not necessary to develop a XFree86 driver?

Chang-Hsieh Wu wrote me:

1. Yes, you need to write a kernel character driver for USB Device.
What kind of pointing device do you have? Could you tell me the
device name? Maybe, I can support you.
2.You need XFree driver and USB device character driver to work together.

Please Chang-Hsieh Wu, could you confirm what you said?

Juliusz and Chang-Hsieh Wu, excuse me for those newbie questions,
thanks very much again,
Edgard Lima

I'm in chager of developing a driver for a pointing device (absolute
  coordinates).

This device has two interfaces, Serial and USB.

I kwow it is possible to do XFree86 drivers for Serial and I've seen
such source code at XFree86 project.

1- Is it possible to do the same thing for the USB interface? or Do
I have to write a linux kernel driver?

If you're planning to develop for Linux only, is there any reason your
device driver couldn't be written to interface with the generic Linux
 input framework?

I haven't checked it in yet. I got sidetracked trying to decide on a
format to use and ended up doing nothing. (Better is the enemy of
good enough.) I'll go ahead and just check it in as a text README
file for now under Xserver/miext/rootless.

xf86Io.c, libos.a GetTimeInMillis() change.

2004-07-13 Thread Tyler Retzlaff
Just want to confirm something,

xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/common/xf86Io.c,v 3.58 has had
GetTimeInMillis() removed from it, the commit message doesn't
say anything specific about it but is the copy of GetTimeInMillis()
from libos.a the one that linked into the XFree86 server from now on?

Please cc me in I'm not a subscriber.

Thanks

indicate that your Radeon driver is NEWER than the version of X you are
running. This one is for version 4.4.0 and you are running 4.3.0

You have two options.

1. upgrade to XFree 4.4.0
2. get an older version of the Radeon driver.

The second is probably simpler. Just go to the XFree website
(www.xfree.org) follow links to get a PREVIOUS release. Select version
4.3.0 select the relevant version for your operating system and GLIBC
version. Download the Xmod.tgz file. Unzip it into a directory where you
know where it is. Navigate down to the modules/drivers directory and then
copy the radeon_drv.o file from there to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/
directory.

Then you should be able to start X.

[XFree86] Xfree 3.3.6 Trio64 support

2004-07-13 Thread happyclappy
I'm planning to install VectorLinux 2.0 with XFree 3.3.6 on an old pentium. The
video hardware is onboard Trio64.

What is the XFree 3.3.6 support for Trio64 like? I guess before I start
installing I'll open the case up and find out exactly which version of the
chipset it has, however I just wanted to run down the options if for some reason
it didn't support that particular Trio64.

[XFree86] X server problem on Dell C600 laptop

2004-07-13 Thread narayan . sharma

Hi,
  I have installed
Redhat Linux 9.0 on Dell C600 laptop. But I am not able to boot it into
the graphical mode. During installation the monitor could not be probed
properly. I tried first with the unprobed monitor, and then Dell 1024x768
display panel options, but every time I keep getting the following errors:

(EE) R128(0): No valid modes found
(EE) Screens found, but none have
a usable configuration.
Fatal server error:
no screens found

I faced the similar problem in the past
also. I tried a lot to troubleshoot it with different combination of XF86
settings, but with no avail. Would highly appreciate if you can help me
in this.

Thanks and Regards,
Narayan Sharma

Thanx Mark but as you can see X has already produced these modelines, and
they work fine when I use the 1600x1200 mode. I guess My question really
isn't how? but rather why does it work when I tell x to do a size it can't
do rather than me telling it what size is right? I hope I'm making sense ...
kinda.

Hi,
OK, so I am probably still misunderstanding you and I no longer have
your original post. Also not sure I can help...

My problem was that XF86config was choosing to put a bunch of
modelines in the config file which worked but looked lousy. For
instance, in the case of my laptop which has a 1280x800 native
resolution to the screen it was setting things up for 1280x1024 which
looked blurry. This page allowed me to correctly set the resolution I
wanted which XF86config wasn't able to do for me.

If I'm understanding your question above why does it work when I
tell x to do a size it can't do, then I think the answer is that X can
do all sizes, in some virtual manner, but whether those sizes look good
is another thing. In my case it did 1280x1024 even though my screen
doesn't. X did some sort of virtual mapping to make it fit.

Again, I guess I'm not sure that I've answered your real question
but I have, however, exhausted the limits of my understand of this
subject!! ;-)

Cheers,
Mark

Cheers Mark :-)
I really Appreciate your help any ways. The problem really is that X is
getting the correct mode of 1680x1050. And everything looks crystal clear
without any gliches. The problem is that It will only do this when I give it
a size I guess my screen can't handle more than x can't eg 1600x1050. then
It works out the correct modelines and everything for me and everything
looks great. But when I tell it to do 1680x1050 it goes on the blitz and
doesnt want to work. My question then Is what is X doing when it works it
out, that I'm not doing when I tell it manually?

Kind regards
Warren Paul

Gee, that is a bit strange. Maybe using something like xdpyinfo (from
memory - please use bash completion to find it) might tell you what mode
it's really running in when it drops down and works.

I'm sure that if you knew what it was set to that you could set it that
way as a default. I think the trick is finding all the right values.

Best of luck!

In your original post I remember seeing only one configuration/logfile. Would
you mind emailing me (us?) both configurations, and both full logfiles (both
being the one that _does_, and the one that _doesn't_ seem to work for you.
Perhaps we can figure out this mystery. :)

Ok, *here's* the weird part. I have a client whose laptop is likewise
1280x800. SuSE's SAX refused to set that size. it would let me set
1280x1024. *But then it actually *did* 1280x800* at server start,
anyway. Says so, right there in the log. *Even though there's no
modeline for that 1280x800*.

Go figure *that* one out.

Well, I can see how that works out. If your monitor is set to autodetect, X
might recognise that the closest to 1280x1024 on that monitor, and by
combining the given modelines with the ones in the BIOS, is 1280x800. It then
selects that modeline from your BIOS, and runs it. :)

Hm, I got similiar messages on my build:

What is the reason for that?

I run Debian testing (sarge?)

This has been fixed in later versions. You might need to use good
versions of gcc and binutils as well.

Hm, I got similiar messages on my build:

 Elf_RelocateEntry() Unsupported relocation type 10

What is the reason for that?

The error is printed by the module loader. It means that the linker
used a relocation type not supported by the loader. This is caused by
the fact that newer binutils versions sometimes use some relocation
types not used in previous versions. Support for these types has been
added to xfree86. Use the latest version. There was a while when I
had to use a slightly old gcc version to make it work too, but I can't
remember which version that was. Anyhow, I think that problem has
been fixed as well.
