[XFree86] XFree Log

2004-08-25 Thread brooks . canavesi
Hello,
I have a ALPHA 64 Bit machine at home running RedHat 7.2 Seawolf
addition. I have been unable to get X to work on its current
configuration. When I try to use the Xconfigurator command it detects a
ATIMach64 graphics card and does not give me any other option to choose.
Is there a standard configuration for a generic VGA card? If you could
send me a generic XFree86 configuration file that would work for any
standard vga, maybe that would work? Any help you can provide will be much
appreciated. If you need more info please reply. The log file data can be
found below.

My config:
Manufacturer: DEC Alpha
Processor: 600MHz
RAM:256MB
Card: ATI Mach64 (4MB?)
OS: RedHat 7.2 Seawolf
XFree: 4.0.3

Your log file indicates you can't set colour depth of 16 so try setting
colour depth to 8.

In your config file look for the Screen0 section and change the default
depth to 8.

[XFree86] need help

2004-08-25 Thread Ronen Shitrit
Hi
I have ramped up a U-Boot with a linux using the YDL dist through a uArt.
I'm trying to use a graphic card but without any success.
I'm trying to use three different PCI graphic card:
ATI 3D RAGE II, Cirrus Logic 5464 and invidia RIVA TNT2.
I think I have something very basic missing.
How does the X server initialize the graphic card, does it insmod the
module for
the detected graphic card?? if so does it has its own modules?? or it
uses the ones I
put under /lib/modules/...
when I compile the kernel without frame-buffer support and the support
for the
specific graphic card the Xfree86 -configure shout that I'm missing the
/dev/fb0 file?
Do I have to compile the driver for the graphic card in the kernel???
my U-Boot doesn't initialize the graphic card at all, is this might be
the problem
or the XFree86 isn't based on any previous initialization made to the
PCI card.

On the ATI-3D all I get is a screen filled with vertical lines.
On the Cirrus Logic all I get is a blank screen.
On the invidia the Kernel driver get stuck when trying to initialize the
RIVA accel.

Any help will be appreciated
Thanks

By
default, XFree86 fails if it doesn't find a mouse. And it looks like it's not
finding a mouse when you start X. I don't know why it suddenly can't find your
mouse. Try running the mouseconfig command to configure your
mouse.

Try to set the virdual screen in duble size orizontal. In others words, if

worked for me, using 2 nvidia. Later I have buyed a dual card. :) same
problem, but, changing the virtual has solved the problem. :)

Subject: [XFree86] Dual Screen not working, help?

 Hi all,

I am trying to start an X server with two screens on two VGA cards.
 Here they are:
 --
--
[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 Pro Ultra
TF
02:01.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 264VT [Mach64
 VT] (rev 40)
(see the output of lspci -vv at : http://cern.ch/tamas.hauer/X/lspci)
 --
--

The interesing ( I think) part of XF86Config is below, (the whole
 thing is at: http://cern.ch/tamas.hauer/X/XF86Config.dual). For
 testing purposes, I define three
layouts: Single, Second and Xine. These should start one screen on
 the first or the
second monitor and the xinerama, respectively. Then I do:

 startx -- -xf86config XF86Config.dual -layout Single
 startx -- -xf86config XF86Config.dual -layout Second
 startx -- -xf86config XF86Config.dual -layout Xine

The first two work as expected but the dual setup does not. In that
 case I get a single
screen on my primary monitor (the one defined in Single) and nothing else.

I would greatly appreciate any insight.

 The XFree logs are here:
 http://cern.ch/tamas.hauer/X/XFree86.0.log.Single
 http://cern.ch/tamas.hauer/X/XFree86.0.log.Second
 http://cern.ch/tamas.hauer/X/XFree86.0.log.Xine

I tried various combinations of drivers (ati and vesa) for the two
 cards, no success

 Addendum:

What drove me crazy just now is that this whole thing is not behaving
consistently. Just before the latest reboot I experienced something
different which I can no longer reproduce (same XF86Config file). The
 situation used to be then:
 Single works
Second does not work: gives me an error of not finding the corresponding
PCI
Xine works in the following way: primary monitor is up, root screen
is size 1600x600, I can move the mouse off the screen but the
 secondary monitor is blank
Dual: (identical to Xine, but without the Xinerama on): hangs the
machine

There may be no hope for me on this problem with the low resolution. I have
a Dell Dimension 2350 flat display, NB this is NOT a laptop though it
behaves just like one. When I try to use high res modes the log shows this:

VESA BIOS detected
VESA VBE Version 3.0
VESA VBE TotalMem: 832kB

Dell does have two BIOS updates, the A01 did have something about choosing
video cards. I now have a choice between Integrated and PCI int the
BIOS setup, Integrated being the default, but nothing on the actual amount
of memory.
Is there anything I can do other than get used to huge windows?

good starting point.

I'm having some issues, I believe with XFree86. I just installed FreeBSD 5.2.1 Rel,
installed XFree86 v 4.3.0, then ran CVsup to update my ports tree, then installed
Fluxbox from ports. I managed to configure it well enough to get into Fluxbox, but
when I exited out from X, the system would hang. I ended up having to hard-shut it
down after it hung. Now I cannot get back into X. When I run 'startx', the system
 hangs.
What kind of things can I try now?

 Thanks,

Re: [XFree86] need help

2004-08-25 Thread Mark Vojkovich
Start by using the nv driver that comes with XFree86 rather
than NVIDIA's binary driver. We can't provide support for third
party drivers. Using the native XFree86 drivers, post your
/var/log/XFree86.0.log from the failing configuration to this list.

 Thanks

Re: [XFree86] Help

2004-08-25 Thread Mark Vojkovich
I think first off you want to be using the native Matrox driver
instead of the generic Vesa driver like you are doing currently.
In the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, replace Driver vesa with
Driver mga.

If problems persist, try using the xtt font module instead
of freetype. That is, in the XF86Config file replace Load freetype
with Load xtt.

Mark.
