While installing RH7.3 (yes, I know, it is old, but i need to run an

color to true color -- I forgot I had not installed the NVIDIA card, but
still had the unrecognized and problematic ~SIS300 card installed.
Also, the monitor i am using (SGI -- Sony -- GDM17E21 was not on the RH7.3
list so I went with the default the install-GUI chose (SGIX1000), but
input the HSync and VSync values for the GDM12E21...
Other than problems with the above defaults, I don't know why, when
switching into graphics mode from text mode, the error no screens found
popped up.

(PS I am noting this for no good reason except that it might reflect same
problem: I (also) couldn't see the Grub Loader on startup. I dunno if
that is a prob with Grub, or with the no screens issue, tho...cuz another

If anyone can help, I have attached the XFree86.log (for those who dislike

but below is a snippet of the log (XFree version 4.2.0):

If it is a question of changing the XF86Config file, yea [I looked at
the XF86Config file but don't see where I should/can change the screen

any help would be appreciated
Either set
DefaultFbBpp 32
in the screen section (below the DefaultDepth 24 statement), or use the
sis driver, for which the current version is available on my website
(yes, even for 4.2.0).

Re: [XFree86] [XFree86 on Solaris/X86] (EE) GLINT(1): Cannot read V_BIOS(3)

2004-12-01 Thread ASIF IQBAL

Hi! Marc

I have installed the aperture driver from ..xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/etc/apSolaris.shar file
and when i again try to configure using the command XFree86 -configure, the log file XFree86.0.log
still reflects the same error. ie (EE) GLINT(1): Cannot read V_BIOS (3).
I also tried to find in the CVS of XFree86 and unable to find. Can you please tell me the exact
location where it is addressed, and if possible give me the detailed solution for this problem.

thanking you,

I am trying to bring up my Permedia card on PCI by XFree86-4.4.0 on Solaris-8/X86. At first I have configured XFree86 only with SIS card, and it worked fine. Then while I tried to configure both SIS and Permedia cards together by the command XFree86 -configure, the file in /var/log/XFree86.0.log have the error message showing like (EE) GLINT(1): Cannot read V_BIOS(3) can anybody give me the solution for this. And for the configured file i got after the above step XF86Config.new, and i tried to check the Xserver by the command XFree86 -xf86config XF86Config.new the system hanged. Please give me the solution for this.

There is a possible fix for this in our CVS. If that doesn't work, it might be that the driver for /dev/xsvc doesn't allow certain mappings, in which case you would have to switch to the XFree86-provided aperture driver.

Hi Mark Vojkovich,
I just installed XFree86-4_4_0 after downloading:
ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.4.0/binaries/Linux-ix86-glibc22/

Now it is ok for Xterm application but I can not have the KDE or GNOME
Desktop Environment even though they have been already installed via my
linux distribution.
Please can you tell me how to configure the KDE or GNOME Environment.
Many thanks,
Noureddine

I believe the 865G requires at least XFree86 4.3.0. If you do
not have at least 4.3.0, you will need to upgrade (4.4.0 is the
most recent version).

[XFree86] ATI Radeon 9200 256MB PCI xfree86-4.3.0.1 - hang

2004-12-01 Thread Boris Kolpackov
Good day,

I am having problems with above-mentioned card. After startx the box
just hangs (black screen) with the only way out is through power-down
(C-A-Backspace doesn't work). There is no log in /var/log/XFree86.0.log.

Here is some info:

* Card is VisionTek eXtasy Radeon 9200 256MB PCI DVI/VGA/SV
  DeviceID is 5961

* XFree86-4.3.0.1 is from Debian unstable. I have disabled DRI (see config
  below).

* I am running linux kernel 2.6.4. I have disabled AGP/Framebuffer.

* Driver from ATI v3.14.6 (for 4.3.0) seem to work ok.

* I tried various options for radeon driver (you can see them in config
  file below) without any difference.

thanks,
-boris

Re: RE : [XFree86] Request for help!

2004-12-01 Thread Mark Vojkovich
   Installing XFree86 installs a /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc which probably
overwrote the choice of desktop environment your Linux distribution
set up. Your Linux distribution should have a script/app to reselect
the desktop environment. On redhat, I think this was called switchdesk.

Failing that, you can always start the desktop enviroment explicitly
at the end of the xinitrc file.

Mark.
