Your font server has crashed. http://xfree86.linuxwiki.org/FAQErrorMessages#head-66113454d1ddc398ffb1e 7bce3fb588e7d5dff4d The full partition may be the cause of the crash or it could be unrelated. It would depend on which partition is full. The best way to fix a partition that is too small is to remove unnecessary stuff until it isn't full. If that is not possible then you will need to re-partition your harddrive which probably means a re-install too. Some distros have tools to grow partitions, I don't know if Mandrake is one of them nor do I know how reliable they are where they exist. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tom Close Sent: Wednesday, June 09, 2004 12:52 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [XFree86] Error initializing xterm ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

It's hair is thinning on top and growing everywhere else. I'm pretty sure English isn't its first language but it's hard to tell anymore. As far as how to use the vesa driver, your old device section is below. Section Device Identifier Videocard0 Driver vga VendorName Videocard vendor BoardName Rendition Verite 2x00 EndSection Just try replacing the vga with vesa and see if that works any better for you. If that doesn't work or you aren't comfortable editing the config file so directly. Try using the xf86cfg cmd and choose the generic svga driver (I'm not sure if that is the correct wording or not.) If neither of those things work you can still get the vga driver to work but you will need to fiddle around with the settings. RE: [XFree86] help with debian on compaq
Knoppix does a good job with the autodetection routines. It also has very conservative default settings. For example its default with XFree86 is to use the vesa driver. This driver almost always works unless your font server crashes and Knoppix doesn't use a font server. You can use Knoppix to get XFree86 setup if you wish. Just copy the file /etc/X11/XFree85Config-4 to your hard drive after you've got everything configured to your satisfaction. You can also install Knoppix to your hard drive, it's based on Debian. :) Just in case you haven't already found it, here is the link to the English language Knoppix resource site. http://www.knoppix.net/ http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/CheatCodes - useful for configuring Knoppix at boot. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Beau Sent: Thursday, May 20, 2004 12:57 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [XFree86] help with debian on compaq On Tue, 18 May 2004, Cynthia Grossen wrote: You'll want to read this first ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.4.0/binaries/Common/Install Actually, I had tried that route once, before posting to the list. I have a compaq presario 2105; I used the lord sutch mini-image to make a debian install disc, then installed using dselect. I used dselect to install X, but couldn't actually get it running. I went to the XFree86.org site and installed from binaries, and spent most of the weekend trying various tweaks to the XFree86 config file created alternately by XFree86, xf86config and xf86cfg; all to no avail. Finally I tried building from source last night, but this was completely over my head. The build choked when it couldn't find a file (pam_application I think it was) and I really didn't know enough about what I was doing to know how to correct and procede. I hope this shows enough effort on my part that some kind soul will show pity on me and help me get this running. I used to have an RH9 install, X worked fine from the install disc. I want to get my head around Debian. I know this isn't a debian list, but I don't really think it's a debian issue, I think it's an, I don't really grok X issue. You can't install kde without having X installed. KDE is a window manager which works in a windowing environment (X). Its like a basement upon which you build a house. KDE is supposed to be started from within X, you can (and should) have a script file that starts kde automatically for your. Often its called startkde and is called by the startx command (which is itself a script.) Like those Russian dolls where each one contains a smaller doll which contains a smaller doll and so on. You can configure options to control the login process and by setting the init level you can determine what happens as you boot your computer. The script files used by the startx and startkde commands are probably good places to start looking. You should definitely have a working X installation with a good config file --before-- you install kde. http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.0/startx.1.html http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.0/xinit.1.html http://cantonlinux.org/pipermail/tech/2002-December/002631.html Just remember man pages are your friend, think of it as a mantra. RE: [XFree86] Fatal server error: no screens found
The error message is telling you that you either didn't configure X after installation or the config file isn't located anywhere that X knows of. (Generally in /etc/X11/XF86Config, but not always--for windows especially.) You can configure X in a number of different ways, XFree86 -configure is probably the easiest. XFree86 -configure When this option is specified, the X server loads all video driver modules, probes for available hardware, and writes out an initial XF86Config(5) file based on what was detected. This option currently has some problems on some platforms, but in most cases it is a good way to bootstrap the configuration process. This option is only available when the server is run as root (i.e., with real-uid 0). http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.0/XFree86.1.html You may also need to use XF86cfg or XF86config. There are several different methods for configuring X, plus some distro specific configuration options. In addition to XFree86 -configure, you can try XF86cfg, and XF86config. There is also a Debian specific method, but I've forgotten the syntax. As far as whether your card is supported I don't know, but you can try using the vesa or vga drivers in the meantime. I'd try the Vesa driver first. It shouldn't be necessary to install from scratch, although you should run the latest version whenever possible. The problem with you 4.1.0.1 setup was that your card was not supported in the version, that's why you received a no devices error. Although you could probably use the Vesa driver there too. You should note that the Vesa and vga drivers do not support hardware 3D acceleration. HTH, cyn -Original Message- From: Giorgio P. RE: [XFree86] Fatal error
One nice thing about Linux is the error messages are sometimes helpful and sometimes humorous and sometimes both but rarely neither. This error message is one of the helpful variety. Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0 This is the really helpful part. If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again. If you are the only user of your system and you can't run X at all. Then go ahead and delete the file specified in the error message. remove /tmp/.X0-lock You may want to use the rm command to do the deletion. Example: rm -v /tmp/.X0-lock Here is a man page for the rm command. You can also access the man page for this command by typing man rm on your system.
