Your card was probed as an S3 and you used the nv driver. The results in the error No
Devices Detected which in your case could be more accurately restated Wrong Driver

Try using the S3 driver instead. You may need to upgrade if that doesn't work. XFree86
is up to version 4.4 now and you are only using 4.1

RedHat 6.2 is way too old to using. You need to upgrade to a newer
version. RedHat is up to version 9 or 10 now and XFree86 itself is at
version 4.4. Most likely whatever problems you are experiencing now have
been fixed in the newer versions.

Subject: [XFree86] Configure no mouse

Hi all,

I was wondering if it is possible to configure X to start without no
mouse?
I am using a Debian box to display information on a screen in a
stand-alone type fashion with no kb/mouse attached to this computer.

I found this configuration item in XF86Config-4:
Section ServerFlags
 Option AllowMouseOpenFail true
EndSection
so X will start without a mouse plugged into the computer, but I would
like X to start with out a mouse cursor being displayed on the screen.

Is there a way of moving the mouse cursor so it is off the screen, or
telling X to start and not display a mouse cursor?

Thanks,

http://xfree86.linuxwiki.org/FAQErrorMessages#head-66113454d1ddc398ffb1e
7bce3fb588e7d5dff4d

The full partition may be the cause of the crash or it could be
unrelated. It would depend on which partition is full. The best way to
fix a partition that is too small is to remove unnecessary stuff until
it isn't full. If that is not possible then you will need to
re-partition your harddrive which probably means a re-install too. Some
distros have tools to grow partitions, I don't know if Mandrake is one
of them nor do I know how reliable they are where they exist.

The log file only contains a message stating that the configuration file
can't be located, which you told us that you erased. You can't just
delete the config file and expect it to work after that unless you also
re-configure it.

As for your original problem, there are people on the list who are very
knowledgeable about SiS cards, perhaps they can help you with that.

It's about 5'7 with black hair and a little on the heavy side. (It
doesn't run as well as it used too.) It's eyes are hazel colored and it
doesn't look like it gets outside much. It's hair is thinning on top and
growing everywhere else. I'm pretty sure English isn't its first
language but it's hard to tell anymore.

As far as how to use the vesa driver, your old device section is below.

Section Device
Identifier Videocard0
Driver vga
VendorName Videocard vendor
BoardName Rendition Verite 2x00
EndSection

Just try replacing the vga with vesa and see if that works any
better for you.

If that doesn't work or you aren't comfortable editing the config file
so directly. Try using the xf86cfg cmd and choose the generic svga
driver (I'm not sure if that is the correct wording or not.) If neither
of those things work you can still get the vga driver to work but you
will need to fiddle around with the settings. (hsync, vsync, and clock)
You will probably need to generate custom modelines, using the gtf
utility that ships with XFree86. (man gtf for usage)

Cyn

No screens found generally indicates that you don't have a working
resolution color depth combination for your setup. (monitor, video
card and driver)

In your specific case, I'm guessing that you don't know that the vesa

Debian Woody includes an old version of XFree86. And it doesn't support
your video card. You need to upgrade to a newer version of XFree86,
preferably version 4.4 which is available from the XFree86 ftp site or
one of its mirrors. There is also a detailed Readme file which contains
instructions on how to perform the upgrade.
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.4.0/binaries/Common/Install

Then you'll need to download this and run it.
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.4.0/binaries/Common/Xinstall.sh

The above will tell you which binary packages to download from here.
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.4.0/binaries/

If you want to stay within the structure of Debian you can upgrade to
version 4.3. Read this link for their procedures on how to do this.

2004-05-21 Thread Cynthia Grossen
o If the binary distribution reported by the Xinstall.sh script is
not
present on the XFree86 site, then there are two possibilities:
first is
that it has not uploaded yet. This is likeliest possibility if you
are
looking shortly after the release date. The second possibility is
that
your target will not be be available at for this release. This is
like-
liest possibility if you are looking about two weeks after the
release
 date. Check here URL:http://www.xfree86.org/4.4.0/UPDATES.html
for
information about updates to our binary distributions, and here
 URL:http://www.xfree86.org/4.4.0/ERRATA.html for errata related
to
 this release.

Looks like possibility number 2 to me. YDL is not exactly a major player
in the Linux world. Maybe they have made packages themselves. Otherwise
you can use the source and roll your own.

RE: [XFree86] help with debian on compaq

2004-05-20 Thread Cynthia Grossen
Knoppix does a good job with the autodetection routines. It also has
very conservative default settings. For example its default with XFree86
is to use the vesa driver. This driver almost always works unless your
font server crashes and Knoppix doesn't use a font server.

You can use Knoppix to get XFree86 setup if you wish. Just copy the file
/etc/X11/XFree85Config-4 to your hard drive after you've got everything
configured to your satisfaction. You can also install Knoppix to your
hard drive, it's based on Debian. :)

Just in case you haven't already found it, here is the link to the
English language Knoppix resource site.

Actually, I had tried that route once, before posting to the list. My
attempts to make X work from binary failed, as did my efforts at
building from source. I'm kindof green.

Here's a possibly relevant question: Howcome knoppix does X so sweetly
on my machine. The corolary question is, might there be some way to use
this fact to help me get going?

I have a few questions for you.

Have you configured XFree86 yet?
http://xfree86.linuxwiki.org/FAQMiscellaneous#head-91ac81654e284e4b03ba61cff83886b90fdf6570

If you have, where did you put the XF86Config file?
It is often placed here, /etc/X11/XF86Config and it sometimes has a different name,
XF86Config-4.

Finally, do you have the permissions set correctly on both the file itself and the
directory?
You will need to be able to have read permissions. Permissions are set using the chmod
command. See the man page for syntax.

Subject: [XFree86] newbie fails with .deb, binaries and source

Greetings,

The subject line pretty much says it all. I have a compaq presario
2105; I used the lord sutch mini-image to make a debian install disc,
then installed using dselect. I used dselect to install X, but couldn't
actually get it running. I went to the XFree86.org site and installed
from binaries, and spent most of the weekend trying various tweaks to
the XFree86 config file created alternately by XFree86, xf86config and
xf86cfg; all to no avail. Finally I tried building from source last
night, but this was completely over my head. The build choked when it
couldn't find a file (pam_application I think it was) and I really
didn't know enough about what I was doing to know how to correct and
procede.

I hope this shows enough effort on my part that some kind soul will show
pity on me and help me get this running. I used to have an RH9 install,
X worked fine from the install disc. I want to get my head around
Debian. I know this isn't a debian list, but I don't really think it's
a debian issue, I think it's an, I don't really grok X issue. All
help appreciated.

Hi

I am windows user. I had no problem (or so I thought) installing the new
4.40 Xfree. After I restarted x I could not login as the keyboard no
longer works when x starts. The mouse still works.

The video card is a FX5200 and the motherboard is A7V8X-X

Your mouse is not configured correctly. Try reconfiguring XFree86.

http://xfree86.linuxwiki.org/ConfigurationHelp The X -configure option
is the easiest IMO.

Also, if you are still having problems after you try this send us the
log (/var/log/XFree86.0.log) itself rather than a screenshot and don't
use the .doc format.

You are more likely to get help if you use english on this list. Try using the one

You should also submit your XFree86 log file. /var/log/XFree86.0.log Then we won't

Here's a page from the wiki, it's not specific enough in this case
unfortunately.
http://xfree86.linuxwiki.org/FAQErrorMessages#head-6b29a6ad665ad76f7497f
c66bba8de58240b9e8d

Starting from the bottom and working up through the log file.

(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

(II) RADEON(0): Total number of valid DDC mode(s) found: 0

(II) RADEON(0): Total number of valid FP mode(s) found: 0
(EE) RADEON(0): No valid mode found for this DFP/LCD

Looks (to me) like you have an LCD display, so you'll need to get the
smaller resolutions working. I'm not sure why, it has to do with how the
LCD monitors work.

(**) RADEON(0): *Default mode 1024x768: 94.5 MHz, 68.7 kHz, 85.0 Hz

Your basic resolutions are working, you also have some of the really big
resolutions available.

(II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode 2048x1536 (width too large for
virtual size)

Not sure what it means, but here is your virtual size

(--) RADEON(0): Virtual size is 1024x768 (pitch 1024)

Here are the problem modes. You'll need to get at least one of them
working.

(II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode 320x175 (bad mode
clock/interlace/doublescan)
(II) RADEON(0): Not using default mode 320x200 (bad mode
clock/interlace/doublescan)

Here are your settings

(II) RADEON(0): Monitor0: Using hsync range of 30.00-96.00 kHz
(II) RADEON(0): Monitor0: Using vrefresh range of 50.00-160.00 Hz
(II) RADEON(0): Clock range: 20.00 to 350.00 MHz

Your DDC maximum clock value is 210MHz, I don't know if the DDC minimum
value is different from the 20.00 MHz reported above.

(WW) (1856x1392,Monitor0) mode clock 218.3MHz exceeds DDC maximum 210MHz

My suggestion is to look at your monitor specifications again and try
some different values. Your clock values may be below the 20.0 MHz
minimum. It might be worth trying the gtf modeline generator, which
comes with XFree86.

You generate the modeline and put it in the monitor section and put the
resolution in the Screen section.

Modeline 320x175 20.00 xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx

If you put the modeline in the Section Monitor and then place

Modes 320x175

  in the Section Screen.

Cyn

You don't need to add those lines to your config file. However if you do,

Your font server has failed.

Here is a link to Red Hat documentation about the font server XFS
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/ref-guide/s1-x-fonts.h
tml

Service xfs restart may work, you'll have to be running as root and X
should not be running. The latter shouldn't be a problem. :) I'm not a Red
Hat user so maybe someone else can help you if you have more questions.

Your second choice is to add the font directories to your config file. This
is the preferred solution.

Add the following lines to the Section Files in the XF86Config file:

   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled

I've tried to use the vi text editor, but it won't let me type anything. I

something wrong (which is entirely possible), or it's not working right.
Can you tell me exactly how to edit the XF86Config file? What programs to
open and how to edit it, etc.? I only have about 4 days worth of Linux
experience so I am very new at this. Remember, I can't use any GUIs because
my mouse doesn't work, so I have to do it at the root prompt. Thanks.

Vi is probably not the best editor to use for a newbie. If you have to use
it for some reason then at least read the man page first.

2003-06-20 Thread Cynthia Grossen
This seems to be a common problem. I was told that supplying a BusID in the
Device section would fix the multiple primary devices problem. If you look
at the two device sections one thing that is different between the two
sections is that your new one lacks a BusID.

 Section Device
 Identifier Card1
 Option SWcursor
 Driver s3
 EndSection

(!!) More than one primary device found
 (--) PCI: (0:12:0) S3 Inc. 86c764/765 [Trio32/64/64V+] rev 0, Mem @

Try using this for your file: PCI: (0:12:0)

Example:

Section Device
Identifier Card1
Option SWcursor
Driver s3
BusID PCI:0:12:0
EndSection

RE: [XFree86] Problems with configuring finding X

2003-06-18 Thread Cynthia Grossen
You can't install kde without having X installed. KDE is a window manager
which works in a windowing environment (X). Its like a basement upon which
you build a house.

KDE is supposed to be started from within X, you can (and should) have a
script file that starts kde automatically for your. Often its called
startkde and is called by the startx command (which is itself a script.)
Like those Russian dolls where each one contains a smaller doll which
contains a smaller doll and so on.

You can configure options to control the login process and by setting the
init level you can determine what happens as you boot your computer. The
script files used by the startx and startkde commands are probably good
places to start looking. You should definitely have a working X installation
with a good config file --before-- you install kde.

Just remember man pages are your friend, think of it as a mantra. It will
protect you. Exhale with the universal man. On a slightly related note, I
think the command should be changed to woman because everyone knows that
women are more helpful than men. ;)

RE: [XFree86] bug report

2003-06-06 Thread Cynthia Grossen
Do you already have an instance of the server running on the machine?

If you don't have another server running (or don't think you do) then remove
(the file located in) /tmp/(called or containing the phrase) .X0-lock and
start again.

If you do have another server running, close it and try again or launch the
second server with the appropriate options (one example: startx -- :1)

RE: [XFree86] Fatal server error: no screens found

2003-06-05 Thread Cynthia Grossen
The error message is telling you that you either didn't configure X after
installation or the config file isn't located anywhere that X knows of.
(Generally in /etc/X11/XF86Config, but not always--for windows
especially.)

You can configure X in a number of different ways, XFree86 -configure is
probably the easiest.

XFree86 -configure
When this option is specified, the X server loads all video driver modules,
probes for available hardware, and writes out an initial XF86Config(5) file
based on what was detected. This option currently has some problems on some
platforms, but in most cases it is a good way to bootstrap the configuration
process. This option is only available when the server is run as root (i.e.,
with real-uid 0).
http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.0/XFree86.1.html

You may also need to use XF86cfg or XF86config. Read their manpages by
following the links in the above link.

(II) R128(0): Monitor0: Using hsync range of 31.50-48.50 kHz
(II) R128(0): Monitor0: Using vrefresh range of 40.00-70.00 Hz
(II) R128(0): Clock range: 12.50 to 250.00 MHz

Your hsync range is not large and this is causing a lot of your modes to be
rejected.
(II) R128(0): Not using default mode 640x480 (hsync out of range)
(II) R128(0): Not using default mode 800x600 (hsync out of range)
(II) R128(0): Not using default mode 1024x768 (hsync out of range)

If you can open this up that might allow these modes to work. There are
other modes available but many are failing with (no mode of this name) as
the explanation. Perhaps they need to be specified in your config file?
Others are failing because you don't have enough (video) memory, probably
for the color depth you specified, so it may be worth trying lower color
depths. A few fail due to vrefresh and mode clock settings.

You've got 8K of video memory.
VideoRAM: 8192 kByte (128-bit SDR SGRAM 1:1).

Looks like you're trying to do 24 bits.
(**) R128(0): Depth 24, (--) framebuffer bpp 32

It may (or may not) be worth generating some custom modelines and trying
those. Use the gtf utility included with X if you want to try this out.

Good luck,

RE: [XFree86] My problem with XFree86

2003-05-31 Thread Cynthia Grossen
There are several different methods for configuring X, plus some
distro specific configuration options. In addition to XFree86 -configure,
you can try XF86cfg, and XF86config. There is also a Debian specific method,
but I've forgotten the syntax.

As far as whether your card is supported I don't know, but you can try using
the vesa or vga drivers in the meantime. I'd try the Vesa driver first.

It shouldn't be necessary to install from scratch, although you should run
the latest version whenever possible.

The problem with you 4.1.0.1 setup was that your card was not supported in
the version, that's why you received a no devices error. Although you
could probably use the Vesa driver there too. You should note that the Vesa
and vga drivers do not support hardware 3D acceleration.

RE: [XFree86] Fatal error

2003-05-29 Thread Cynthia Grossen
One nice thing about Linux is the error messages are sometimes helpful and
sometimes humorous and sometimes both but rarely neither. This error message
is one of the helpful variety.

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0

This is the really helpful part.

If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again.

If you are the only user of your system and you can't run X at all. Then go
ahead and delete the file specified in the error message. remove
/tmp/.X0-lock You may want to use the rm command to do the deletion.

Example:
rm -v /tmp/.X0-lock

Here is a man page for the rm command. You can also access the man page
for this command by typing man rm on your system. My apologies if you are
already aware of this.
