over this, I'm fairly new to Linux, used Sparc machines for a couple years
at Uni 7 years ago - hence my linux knowledge leaves a bit to be desired

I keep getting this error when trying to run startx, I'm sure it's very
easy to correct, just no idea how

Have attached the log file for viewing pleasure :-) ?

Thanks for your time in reading this email, and even more thanks if you can
tell me how to fix it :-)

first of all, you're version of XFree86 is quite old (4.2.0). Current stable
is 4.4.0, so I highly recommend you to upgrade it, as you're videocard is
much better supported now. Second thing I think could be a problem, is that
you are using the vesa driver. Try to change this to the nv driver provided
by xfree (Section Device in /etc/X11/XF86Config), or download and install
the binary drivers from nvidia (http://www.nvidia.com), which support 3D
acceleration, but are not open source.

Btw: Not shure, if rajesh k has the same problem, because there was no log
attached.

 Thank you.
That might be it. I have exatly FX5700 card. Dont remember exactly what
X version does gentoo tries to install, but I think thats it.

My Moderboard has an integrated intel video card (hope that works with
4.3's thoug ;) ). I will try to see if I can get both living happyly
together (integrated video is dissabled now)

Uhm. What else could I do if gentoo has not updated its version?
I think I need to read a bit more on its portage...

Thank you again for the pointer.

there's an ebuild + instructions available at:
http://media.homelinux.org/gentoo
Gentoo will not include 4.4.0 in portage because of license issues they have.
I use the ebuild above on various machines and it works perfectly.

no, you have not the latest version installed. Why do you think that? It's 3
years old.

This is a pre-release version of XFree86, and is not supported in any
way. Bugs may be reported to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and patches submitted
to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions,
please check the latest version in the XFree86 CVS repository
 (http://www.XFree86.Org/cvs)

 XFree86 Version 4.1.0.1 / X Window System

If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
   reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)

Read the above lines carefully, and you'll know, what to do ;-)
An alternative would be to use the binary drivers from nvidia.

 Thanks!

Would you mind posting your ebuild somewhere so others can use it?

I will do this, as soon as my ebuild works. I think, I'll post it here and on

Re: [XFree86] SiS DRI

Hello,

 hi all,
last week i compiledinstalled xfree 4.3.99.901 on my gentoo 1.4 machine
to test the new sis dri driver included( i have a sis 630 graphics
card). but when i try to startx glxgears the whole machine crashes.
glxinfo reports direct rendering to be correctly enabled. i think the
problem could maybe be the drm kernel modules which are for 4.3 in the
2.4.23 kernel :-/ i tried both the modules compiled into the kernel or
as a module and i also tested the xfree-drm 4.3.0r7 package for gentoo
but it simply doesnt work :( . another thing i tried was to compile
agpgart either as a module or into the kernel but this also showed no
 success.
maybe anyone of you knows how to get dri to work on my machine...
btw dri worked with the old dri driver of xfree 4.2.
 thx for help

 Steve

I have a laptop with SIS630 and dri works with cvs sources from
dri.sourceforge.net. Just follow their instructions to get them. After make
World copy the sis_dri.so from somewhere under the exports-folder
to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/. After that everything should be ok. The build
of sis_dri was broken a long time, now Eric Anholt is working on it and does
a great job. I use the kernel module from xfree-drm (gentoo-packaged).

Is there an Xconfigurator-like program in Gentoo that I can use to
configure this thing a bit more easily? Or is there one that I can
easily emerge using Gentoo's awesome portage setup? Sorry if this is
a really dumb question, but I am trying to learn more.
 Thanks,

afaik gentoo has no program to do this for you. I just used xf86config
(included in XFree), answered its questions and all went well.

Your card is newer than your server and so the server doesn't know it. Current

by it, an upgrade would be the first step.
