[XFree86] new installation: KDE no longer starts
I set up suse 10.2 on an X64 box. To use the latest ATI drivers, X86free is required. The Xfree86 installation went well. However, when I boot the PC, I no longer get the KDE environment. Rather, I get a simple Xwindows interface. Any suggestions? ___ XFree86 mailing list XFree86@XFree86.Org http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

[XFree86] Newbie- Radeon 7000 Video modes
UsingXFree86 4.3.0 Radeon 7000 ve Sony CPD 100ES This monitor supports 800x600 at 85Hz, and lists it inits table of VESAmodes.I have a high sensitivity to flicker and need thehigher refresh rate. I used the xf86config utility and entered the correct mode rangesfrom the monitor manual. However, it seems that the system has used a refresh rate that is lower than 70. I get lots of flicker. Is there a very simple way to force the monitor to use this video mode? I used gtf and obtained a modeline for this refresh rate, but I'm not sure where to put it,and I'm hoping there is an easier way. Thanks in advance. Gary Haithcock
[XFree86] GIMP Perl Server under Xvfb
I have recently installed GIMP to run under Xvfb. Additionally, I created two init.d scripts to automate the start/stop of Xvfb and GIMP's Perl Server at start-up/shutdown. Both scripts work great when executed manually, but when actually power cycling the system it only launches Xvfb and GIMP without the Perl Server. I have Xvfb as one of the first scripts started under init.d and the GIMP with Perl Server as one of the last. Below, is the syntax I am using in each script. daemon Xvfb :1 -screen 0 640x480x24 -fp /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/ -nolisten tcp -ac daemon /usr/bin/gimp --batch \''(extension-perl-server 1 0 0)'\' \''(gimp-quit 0)'\' --no-interface --no-data --verbose --display :1.0 --no-splash --no-splash-image --console-messages --enable-stack-trace never The GIMP mailing list suggested it might be due to environmental variables with Xvfb or something of the sort. Any ideas? Respectfully, Gary P.S. I am using it for a CAPTCHA installation. ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

Try disabling your sound card, so that sound drivers do not load at all. Then try starting and stopping X. If that solves it, then the sound drivers are potentially buggy. Actually, I don't have sound enabled already because this computer doesn't have a sound card. And when I tried compiling a new kernel I didn't compile sound drivers. I turned them off. Another common problem is APM. Disable APM in your BIOS, and disable apmd from being loaded at OS boot time. Same as above, I don't have it, disabled it, and did not compile it in the customer kernel. Someone on another forum suggested it might be a hardware issue and to see if there is an update to my BIOS. I am going to try that first. Another thing I can try is to switch the hard drive out with the Windows 2000 machine and try to load X that way... that would definately tell if it's hardware. As for screen blanking, do you use OpenGL or otherwise fancy screensavers? That aspect of the problem disappeared this morning when I updated to the most recent CVS snapshot, however logout is still causing difficulties. This is a little aggrivating since I recently bought my ATI AIW Radeon 7500 because of the 3D support and the TV tuning capabilities. This is the reason that I am forced to either telinit 3 or zap X. This same or similar issue has been reported on the DRI site by me and others using the ATI Radeon (r100) chipset devices. The thing is, if zapping the server works, then it can't be something really bad like a lockup. Maybe the server is running fine, there's 'just' no display? I think that I might be seeing the same problem on a Sapphire Radeon 9000 (detected as a RV250 If) - at least I am seeing similar behavior. The only thing that triggers the lock for me is logging out while running a display manager though, at least I haven't seen any other lockups lately. I haven't had time to nail down if I can avoid it (e.g. by disabling DRI) - that's why I haven't written about it earlier - but the computer _really_ seems dead. Doesn't even answer a ping, and a hard reset is the only cure. Nothing shows up in the logs. I'm starting the computer in text mode and starting X with startx for now, that works fine but having a DM running would be nice. I'll try to figure out how to make gdm restart instead of just resetting the X server. (That computer is at home and turned off, won't be there for a few hours so I can't test it for a while yet.) I've tried with 4.2.99.3 and 4.2.99.901 (actually CVS from couple of days after that release), RedHat 8, gcc 3.2, and I have tried both RedHat 2.4.18 kernels and Marcelo's 2.4.21-pre4. I realize that this isn't really enough information to troubleshoot sensibly, but I just wanted to let you know for now that this problem does exist for others too and for later Radeons than the R100 as well. Apart from this problem I think that XFree86 4.3 looks pretty cool! Best regards, Per Bjornsson - From what I found, the system is effectively dead as well. The freeze seems to lock the I/O subsystem of the kernel. Thus, killing the network, mouse, and keyboard. I think that it is creating a race condition where the system is both shutting down and starting up the card at the same time, effectively grabbing at the card at the same time. The problem also disappears if I run mplayer using the x11 (shm) output, it's just that my computer is too slow to play dvds... Has anyone else had this problem with the G200? [Xpert]Strangeness with dual head MGA 550
Hi, I am running a Matrox G550 dual head on Gentoo Linux (using ebuild 4.2.0-r12 (which from what I can read = 4.2.0 + the 3 security patches, + a Wacom mouse tablet patch). I have seen some occurences of 'crosstalk' between the screens, whereby graphical elements are drawn on the wrong screen (in particular text and rectangular elements). This is fixed by disabling acceleration on the secondary screen, which is then (at 1600x1200) painfully slow. The Matrox mgadrivers are worse in this regard, and the effect is particularly evidenced with VMWare in full screen mode, and some builds of KDE (3.0.1 was bad, 3.0.3 I have not yet seen a problem). I have attempted to isolate the particular acceleration element that is causing this with very little success (since the problem is not 100% repeatable, and there are a LOT of acceleration elements). At present using KDE 3.0.3 and VMware windowed the system is useable, but it would be really nice to be able to run VMware in full screen mode Anyone have any ideas.
