I've attached the XFree86.0.log just in case. The only difference should be the debug message that I added. Hi Charl, I can't reproduce your problem here. Usually with all hw accel disable, radeon driver shouldn't cause a keyboard lockup. It may cause a screen corruption or a seg fault if something goes wrong. I'm wondering it's the input device's (like mouse driver) problem. I noticed there are some changes for PS2 mouse handlings in 4.2.99.4 (mouse.c). Maybe something affects your setup there, I'm totally guessing here. You win the prize! That was it... I'm using an older version of GPM in repeater mode: it's using my synaptics touch pad and repeating to X (via /dev/gpmdata) in ImPS/2 mode. If I setup my XF86Config-4 to use only the external USB mouse, 4.2.99.4 starts up fine. If I set it up to use ONLY the GPM repeater, I get the blank-screen/dead keyboard effect. Recall that 4.2.99.3 works fine on both setups. I'll do some further experiments to see whether this is due to how my version of GPM repeats or whether it's a PS/2 thing. Just checked recent changes, can't think of a reasonable explanation. One remote possibility is the SURFACE_CNTL change. In principle, this change shouldn't cause any problem. But I've seen some strange things with this register on other chips. Can you try this: move save-surface_cntl = 0; into #if X_BYTE_ORDER == X_BIG_ENDIAN pass and replace it with old save-surface_cntl = RADEON_SURF_TRANSLATION_DIS If still no luck, I'll try to reproduce this thing here. Attempting to kill X or shutdown the laptop via ssh results in a complete system lockup. 4.2.99.3 works perfectly on the *exact* same configuration. I've attached my XFree86.0.log although it seems to be normal. I am subscribed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] but not [EMAIL PROTECTED], so CCs in the case of the latter would be appreciated. Re: [XFree86] 4.2.99.4 no display, locked keyboard (Radeon 7500 Mobility)
You said: I just built 4.2.99.4 from CVS on my Radeon 7500 Mobility laptop. Starting X yields a blank display and a locked keyboard. Attempting to kill X or shutdown the laptop via ssh results in a complete system lockup. I had a similar problem (same video card, 4.2.99.4 binary) that was caused by a mismatched radeon.o kernel module. I'm not sure if that's what's going wrong for you though. Building the module from the latest DRI CVS sources solved it, but there were other problems: 1. The new cursors don't work well with hardware cursor acceleration in the radeon driver. X would lock for a second or two any time the cursor had to change from a new-style Xcursor cursor (e.g. red arrow) to an old core cursor (e.g. edge resize arrows). Using option SWcursor true solves the problem at the expense of disabling hw cursor acceleration. 2. I was using KDM and after exiting X my machine would lock up as it tried to restart the login screen. I think that even without KDM I couldn't restart X after I started it once. I'm not positive about this though. Out of curiosity, since you also have a 7500 mobility, have you ever tried running it dual-head with an external monitor? I'm trying to make that happen and having problems: http://www.mail-archive.com/xfree86@xfree86.org/msg00947.html Cheers, -n8 -- -- Nathaniel Gray -- Caltech Computer Science -- -- Mojave Project -- http://mojave.cs.caltech.edu -- ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
