Re: [XFree86] no screens found !!!

2006-03-20 Thread Mark Vojkovich
The logfile implies that the XF86Config-4 file is configured to
use a framebuffer device (Driver fbdev), however, the kernel
does not support (or no longer supports) a framebuffer device.
You might want to try changing to the i810 driver (Driver i810
in the Section Device in the XF86Config-4 file). The i810
driver that comes with your server version *might* be new enough to
support your graphics card.

It seems that either your kernel supported a framebuffer device
and no longer does after your unclean shutdown, or the XF86Config-4
file got changed to use fbdev since the last time it was working.

2005-06-14 Thread Andrew Haninger
On 6/14/05, Lech Pakowski [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Probably you are right. The point is that I would like to make as few
changes as possible (preferrebly none) to the kernel and the whole
 environment.
The whole story started as I wanted to make a series of tests to my running
Linux server. Because some o them might be destructive, I decided to clone
the server to another machine, with different hardware (I don't have a
second identical computer). Cloning was done by backup of the server and
restore to the new machine. After restore X server didn't start in the new
environment. As the X server appeared to be pre-release, 4.1.0.1 december,
2001 (not supported) I decided to install a new version of X.
So now the question is wether it is possible to start X (necessary to run
the tests) making the smallest changes possible.
Maybe another version of X will work?

I was going to suggest trying to get a copy of the kernel source of
the kernel that you're running and build a agpgart.o module, but it
looks like you're running 2.2.17, which is pretty ancient.

It may work, though if you get a copy of the kernel source for 2.2.17
and configure it to build agpgart support and then build it but only
copy out the agpgart.o module.

One problem /might/ be that it looks like your build kernel (2.4.x) is
pretty significantly different from your running kernel (2.2.x). It
might be that XFree86 configured itself for features present on a 2.4
kernel and is now confused by the difference of the 2.2 kernel. Maybe
if you rebuild on 2.2.17? And install a agpgart.o module?

This sounds like a crazy project, but I understand that it's sometimes
necessary and I hope it works out well for you.

You need to upgrade software. Your XFree86 version is from
2001. Glancing through the release notes, I see the SiS 650
was supported starting about XFree86 4.3.0 in early 2003.

Looks like you're trying to run a framebuffer-using Xserver with no
framebuffer. Try a recent version of Xfree with the standard Xfree86
xserver. Pick the driver for whichever graphics card you have.
Probably 'lspci' will give you some ideas about what's inside, if you
aren't sure.

Other than problems with the above defaults, I don't know why, when
switching into graphics mode from text mode, the error no screens found
 popped up.

(PS I am noting this for no good reason except that it might reflect same
problem: I (also) couldn't see the Grub Loader on startup. I dunno if
that is a prob with Grub, or with the no screens issue, tho...cuz another
OS shoulda loaded...but it didn't...as I said, am noting this as the Grub
loader is somewhat graphical :P )

If anyone can help, I have attached the XFree86.log (for those who dislike
attachments, there is a copy of it at ftp.evl.uic.edu/pub/INcoming/ABOUT),
but below is a snippet of the log (XFree version 4.2.0):

If it is a question of changing the XF86Config file, yea [I looked at
the XF86Config file but don't see where I should/can change the screen

 any help would be appreciated

What video card are you using?? Maybe your video card doesn't support it??
try looking in you XF86Config file which should be located in /etc/X11/ and
change the line down near the bottom near sceen section and change depth to
16 or 8.

Use nano eg. #nano -w /etc/X11/XF86Config

RE: [XFree86] No screens found

2004-05-11 Thread Cynthia Grossen
I have a few questions for you.

Have you configured XFree86 yet?
http://xfree86.linuxwiki.org/FAQMiscellaneous#head-91ac81654e284e4b03ba61cff83886b90fdf6570

If you have, where did you put the XF86Config file?
It is often placed here, /etc/X11/XF86Config and it sometimes has a different name,
XF86Config-4.

Finally, do you have the permissions set correctly on both the file itself and the
directory?
You will need to be able to have read permissions. Permissions are set using the chmod
command. See the man page for syntax.

I've Googled around for you a bit this time, and found two possible answers to

1. You have a tv or 2nd monitor hooked up.
2. Your DDC module is ruining things. Set DDCMode to False in your Device

I'm on thin ice here, as I have no experience with your setup, but my guess is
that since you didn't set up the TV, nor told X that it should use different
settings for the two display outputs, it autodetects (through DDC) the
ranges, and takes the lowest one (the one for your TV). Disconnect the TV to
see if your problems disappear. If so: properly set up the two displays, or
else you may be damaging your TV when you have it display an out of range
signal.

[XFree86] no screens found

2003-07-22 Thread Joel
I'm trying to set up a clean version of Debian, and for the life of me I
can't figure out why X won't work.

Attached it the output log of what happens when I try and run startx, as
well as my XF86Config.

For what it's worth, I've got an s3 virge for video, a SYS 1510P for a
monitor (flatscreen; does 1024x768), I'm running 2.4.21 (custom built),
and debian unstable. Debian stable had exactly the same problem though.
I tried going to the (unsupported) 4.3 for debian and got the same error,
so I downgraded again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

as I can see your monitor needs a horizontal sync frequency between 30
and 60 kHz; and a vertical refresh between 70 and 90 Hz.
If this is not correct you can try to release the requirements, and,
for example, set up a HorizSync 30-70 and VertRefresh 55-90.

Another thing you can try, is changing the modelines; you can also tune
uf them after, using xvidtune (also here you can destroy your display)

xauth: (argv):1: bad display name death:0 in add command

I have ho idea about this errors

X: warning; process set to priority -11 instead of requested priority -10

I think this is Debian related; also I have the same thing, but it
doesn't affect the working of X

still strange.

hoping that will help you.

Hi,

Try using Driver s3virge in the Device section for your video card.
Then remove Device Accel from the screen section.

Try sending your log file of a crash and your config file (and perhaps the
output of lspci) so someone can help you out (plain text format, please).

which you're supposedly not having to configure, the frame-buffer one,
simply states: device not found: /dev/fb0 (no, not /dev/fd0, but
/dev/fb0). The oddest thing is that one of the configuration makers,
xf86cfg, runs perfectly fine- I can see the sceen correctly, the mouse
works, keyboard's OK, card+monitor- both goodyet it won't let me use
that setup for the actual running of XFree86!
I give up... I've heard of a mc app, is that similar? I really had my

[XFree86] no screens found

2003-06-23 Thread J CB
Hi, when I input startx I get an error saying no screens found. I have a
Samsung SyncMaster 750s connected toa Diamond V770 Ultra video card with an
nVidia TNT2 Ultra chip and 32MB of video RAM. I am trying to run X in Debian
GNU/Linux 3.0r1 with XFree86 4.1.0. I have ran xf86config and xf86cfg
without any success in configuring the XF86Config file, so I exported a
config file generated in the same machine but with Mandrake GNU/Linux 9.0
running 4.3.0 and replaced it in Debian. It got closer to working but it
didn't quite do it.

Any help I could get would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Jimmy

Usually, but not always, that error means that your video
card is too new to be supported by the XFree86 version you
have. We need to see your /var/log/XFree86.0.log file to be
sure because there could be other causes of that error.

2003-02-15 Thread Michael Olijnyk

I'm new to Linux and I'm trying to install Red
Hat 7.3 on a Compaq Deskpro.Videocard is S3 Trio 64V2 GX. Monitor is Samsung
SyncMaster 500b. The probecorrectly identifies the monitor and detects the
video card as S3 Trio 64V2(generic). The system is unable to boot into
graphical mode. I receive thefollowing message after entering startx. I'm
also unable to useXconfigurator for I get a segmentation error upon using
it. I have spentmore than 15 hours reinstalling and trying different
settings with nosuccess. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I
don't want to give up onLinux yet! Thank You.Xfree 86 Version 4.2.0

[XFree86] No Screens Found Error

2003-02-02 Thread George FernandeZ
Hi, ive been getting this weird error with XFree86. im pretty sure its because
of the monitor but since im kinda new to linux i dont really know how to fix
it. First, i had Xfree 4.1 or something. then i downloaded the latest one and
upgraded to 4.2.99.3. (I had the errors the first time too). It keeps saying
Screens found, but none have a usable configuration. My monitor's lowest
resolution is 800x600 @ 85Hz and the highest it can go is 1280x1024 @ 60Hz. I
have a geforce2 and Im running Debian (I tried it out with Slackware too and I
got the same error). Ive attached my log and the Xf86config-4 file. Thanks

You've got problems with your config file.

1) You are using the nv driver that comes with XFree86 but you are
trying to load the glx module from NVIDIA's binary release (and an
old one at that). Remove /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so
so that it will use the one from Mesa that comes with XFree86 instead.

2) You've specified Option UseFBDev true indicating that a
framebuffer device should be used to setup the card rather than
letting the nv driver do it, yet you don't have a framebuffer
device in your kernel (I wouldn't recommend it either). Remove
   the UseFBDev option.

Alternatively, you could install the binary drivers from NVIDIA's
web site. I'd recommend version 3123 because 4191 had some problems.

Hi,
I cannot get X to run on my Redhat 8.0 installation. I am using a Dell Inspiron 8000 with a ATI Mobility M4 card. I've upgraded to the latest version of xfree86 and run the configuration tool several times. I've pasted the log file below.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

The automatic detection of the capabilities of the LCD panel doesn't
work correctly. Which means that you need to specify this in the
configuration file for this to work.

In /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, in the Monitor section try to specify
something like this (taken from my config file here on my Inspiron
8000 with M4 and 1400x1050 panel :)/ You need to fuzz it into the
structure in your own configuration file, the important part is
specifying something sensible for VertRefresh and HorizSync:

Section Monitor
Identifier Monitor0
VendorName Monitor Vendor
ModelNameMonitor Model
VertRefresh 40-110
HorizSync 28-90
Option DPMS
Modeline 1400x1050 107.85 1400 1450 1500 1999 1050 1058 1070 1150
EndSection

The 1400x1050 modeline is probably redundant now, when I first set
this up almost two years ago it was needed. :)
