Re: [XFree86] XFree86.0.log

2007-11-15 Thread Shentino
Problem is evident in bottom of log...you either have no mouse or the
RH7 VM isn't able to produce one.

Try fiddling around with gpm or sumthin and see if you can get mouse access.

If that doesn't work, check your VMware settings and make sure that
the VM can see the mouse.

X is choking because it can't find a mouse...either the VM is screwed
up or VMware isn't showing a mouse to the VM.

Re: [XFree86] XFree86.0.log ; unable to change screen resolution

2004-11-18 Thread Mark Vojkovich
A couple things. First I think you're using the wrong driver.
There is an Sis driver for Sis chips, but you are using the VESA
driver which is unaccelerated. The VESA driver is limited to modes
that are listed in the VESA bios so it will be less flexible in
mode selection than other drivers. To change from VESA to Sis,
replace Driver vesa with Driver sis in the /etc/X11/XF86Config
file. Second, there are 1024x768 modes in the VESA bios, so the
VESA driver that you are using should be able to run at 1024x768.
The reason why it doesn't is because according to the monitor specs,
the monitor isn't capable of it.

Are these the values you have for HorizSync and VertRefresh in
the XF86Config?:

(II) VESA(0): Monitor0: Using hsync range of 31.50-37.90 kHz
(II) VESA(0): Monitor0: Using vrefresh range of 50.00-70.00 Hz

Even a lowly 1024x768 mode running at only 60 Hz will have
a horizontal sync of about 47 kHz, which exceeds the range
specified for the monitor. The server reported this...

*(II) VESA(0): Not using built-in mode 1024x768 (hsync out of range)
 Mode: 117 (1024x768)

You should double-check your monitor specs. If 37.9 kHz is really
the maximum you wouldn't be able to do 1024x768 without using an
ugly interlaced mode. I would expect a 17 monitor would not have
such a low maximum hsync.

Mark.

files and when I deleted them everything was OK

Ie. just run XFree86. CtrlAltBackspace will
 quit it.
If you can do that, then the server itself is
 running fine.

2004-09-30 Thread Benstead, Kevin
Level 5 gets you straight into X at startup. Because your X does not work
properly (yet) that's why it crashes to console.

Startup in console mode (level 3) until you get your X running properly and
then look at this link on how to get xdm going so that you can have a
graphical logon.

http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue43/nielsen.xdm.html

Having a 'X' cursor means the Xserver is running. It's just that you don't
have a windows manager running.

The attached xinitrc file should be placed in tour /etc/X11/xinit/
directory. When you run startx it will now launch the TWM window manager,
give you a clock and a terminal window.

If you want other windows managers (KDE Gnome etc) try looking on their
websites for advice on getting them running.

I reinstalled KDE from CD but nothing happened, so it
must be windows manager. What is its package name,
i.e. how to reinstall it? Or how to check is it
running?

thx very much

2004-09-30 Thread Benstead, Kevin
At this point my knowledge runs out. I've never had to configure a KDE
system. I use X on a very small embedded system so don't have the space for
KDE.

This link
http://developer.kde.org/documentation/books/kde-2.0-development/ch01lev1sec
5.html is to the KDE website which tell you how to install KDE. It also
gives you the chance to download the latest version (if you want).

Best of luck.

Re: [XFree86] XFree86.0.log

2004-09-30 Thread Mark Vojkovich
There were no errors in the log file so I assume that means
there's nothing wrong with the server. It sounds more like a
problem with the window manager. Can you run XFree86 by itself?
Ie. just run XFree86. CtrlAltBackspace will quit it.
If you can do that, then the server itself is running fine.

Mark.

Your log file shows only one warning (about a sync rate setting being
higher
than the ratings of the monitor) and no errors.

I can only assume you sent this log because you thought we might be

RE: [XFree86] XFree86.0.log

2004-09-29 Thread Benstead, Kevin
Callisto

My reply was to Zeljko Djuricic who has sent his log file in without an
description of the error. Please check that any replies you receive are
actually about your problem. The mailing list sends copies of every problem
and every reply to everyone on the mailing list. Don't just assume that a
reply is an attempt to answer your problem.

Anyway YOUR problem is to do with the lack of a font server running on your
system.

You have two options you can disable the requirement for a font server in
your Xf86Config file and use the fonts directories instead OR you can make
sure your font server is running before you attempt to start X.

This FAQ (which Mark Vojkovich suggested you read earlier today) should tell
you what you need to know.

Howdy All,
been trying to get X up on a BW G3 PowerMac (Yellow Dog Linux), but
have had little luck.
when I ran Xautoconf, I was given an XF86Config file that won't boot
into X.
My yaboot.conf file has a kernel arg of video=ofonly - don't know if
that affects X or not?

Basically, HELP!!!

I'd like to be able to get into X - hopefully at a resolution that
doesn't make me feel like I got my computer at Toys R Us (displaying
thousands of colors would be sweet, too).

The 2 immediately following replies to this will be my XF86Config file

Hi
there

Just unable to log
in to my Red Hat box. It gets to the area where it wants to start the GUI but
just starts looping. I was able to get this log file by ssh into the busted
machine and running init 3

Your fonts are broken:

Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list!

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

Around Redhat 8, they stopped hard-coding font paths into the
XF86Config file and use xfs (X font server). Make sure it runs at bootup
(did you turn it off accidentally?). You should see a symlink here:
lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 13 Apr 26 2003 /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S90xfs -
../init.d/xfs

If you are in runlevel 5, ssh in and try this:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs status

to see if it's running... if not, change 'status' to 'start' and see if
it goes. If it was off but started, make it go on bootup by make the link (or run
redhat-config-services) to make it for you.

That should be enough to get you going.

It appears to me that your mouse is misconfigured. You have
specified a serial mouse (really? you have a serial mouse?) yet
the serial port specified does not exist.

[XFree86] XFree86.0.log made at first boot crash

2003-09-21 Thread Henk
Dear people,

Hopefully you can give me a response on this. The crash is at my first
install during first boot. The boot floppy made during install can't find
the linux RedHat 8 installation, so I can't make any changes to drivers or
whatever. I also have the Knoppix 3.2 cd, but it's not possible with
knoppix to make changes to the XF86Config file. Below I copied the
XFree86.0.log, I hope you can give me advice on this.

Sincerely, Henk.

XFree86.0.log, I hope you can give me advice on this.

you don't want x to startup at boot if you are working on x, edit the
/etc/inittab file so the line that looks like this, has a 3 (not 5) in
it. (mine is a different distro so might be slightly different)

id:3:initdefault:

also you should be able to specify runlevel 3 (no x) at the bootup, if I
recall grub: edit the boot options (e), select the line that specifies a
kernel, edit (e), add a 3 at the end, end edit (esc), then boot (b).

This card (GeForce4 MX) works with the nv driver that comes
with XFree86 4.3. I can't say for sure if it's possible to get it
to work any other way. It *might* work with the nv driver that
comes with XFree86 4.2 (your version) if you have one of the older
GeForce4 MX cards. But, at a minimum you're going to need to
modify the XF86Config file. Note, that root can start the server
with an alternate XF86Config file from the command line. eg.:
  startx -- -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new

Fellow Gurus,

I am having issues with getting any information on the web about what my
problems maybe in concerns to getting my x server to start up. I have tried a couple
differnt configurations and a couple different pieces of hardware. I have also tried
to disable everything and remove all unneeded hardware from the machine and
reinstalled each time I changed something. I am at a loss. I have provided the log
file and a list of configurations as far as hardware goes. Could you please maybe give
me a bit of direction in solving this.

Video Card: GeForce2 MX 32MB
Harddrive: Western Digital 20GB

Security on your system is too high to run the X-Window system.
Root isn't able to open /dev/mem, etc... I don't know much about
the BSDs so I don't know the exact fix, but this is a common problem
on those operating systems.

2003-01-24 Thread Rikard Bø
Hello.

I just downloaded and installed linux red hat 8.0.

It can't start the X server.

I have tried running XF86config and I've also downloaded the last
version of xfree86 (4.2.1)

Still i have the same problems.
This is happening at startup:
* The screen turns black for a second (4 times)
* Then it tells med that it cannot start the X server.

It's not able to set it up for me either...

I have a LG99 monitor and a ATI Radeon 8500 graphical card.

The log from /var/log is attached...

Hope you can help me!
