I have just compiled and installed XFree86 Version 4.3.99.8 on my Dell
Inspiron 2600 and when I run startx I get :-

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ startx
  Using authority file /home/alf/.Xauthority
  Writing authority file /home/alf/.Xauthority

  Until I hit Ctrl-C, XFree86 gets no further. However if I hit Ctrl-C, XFree86
  runs fine.

What is going on ? What is .Xauthority and why do I need it ?

Is it possible that this has anything to do with inetv6 as I have also seen the
following at the beginning of the /var/log/XFree86.0.log.

_XSERVTransSocketOpenCOTSServer: Unable to determine socket type for inetv6
_XSERVTransOpen: transport open failed for inetv6/puppypad:0
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to open listener for inetv6

This btw is running on Linux Slackware 9.0 kernel 2.4.20.

BTW2 I installed this to fix the Alt-Ctrl-Fn crash I was getting and it seems to
  have achieved that.

This problem has already been fixed.

Marc thanks for your reply, however which problem are you speaking of. The
.Xauthority problem, or the inetv6 problem or the Alt-Ctrl-Fn crash ?

The only one I am concerned with is the .Xauthority problem.

I understand that, but until the IPv6 front (which affects xauth) shows
longer-term stability, I'm not prepared to deal with related problems in
anything older than HEAD.
