Upgrade your version of XFree86, for the Radeon 9700 is not supported in 
4.1.x. You might even want to consider upgrading your Linux distribution.

Your log file says:

 Parse error on line 279 of section InputDevice in file /etc/X11/XF86Config
   Section is not a valid keyword in this section.
 (EE) Problem parsing the config file

Show us /etc/X11/XF86Config and we should be able to find the problem there.

  Don't use the vesa driver for that card.  The nv driver should
work fine.
