Re: [delicious-discuss] auto consolidation of URLs with and without www
CLEARLY, no one wants to see URLs that point do different resources combined into one! But at the same time, it's just as clearly somewhat misleading (and personally an annoyance) when URLs that DO point to the same site are listed no differently from URLs that point to different sites. I don't see how this could be effectively determined automatically. Some kind of voting system might be more reliable, but what happens to a user's tags when two URLs are combined? And couldn't this be gamed or vandalized a bit? The fact that a site can be split four ways does seem to be a problem when it comes to making accurate recommendations. If rankings and clustering depend in part upon influencers, then a site that is inthe database as: http://www.foo.com/ http://foo.com/ http://www.foo.com/index.html and http://food.com/index.html has effectively had their place perhaps significantly changed... c ___ discuss mailing list discuss@del.icio.us http://lists.del.icio.us/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [delicious-discuss] auto consolidation of URLs with and without www
I would like to point out that changing it to 'www' instead of removing the 'www' would be the more logical choice... however this has been discussed before and it was decided that since, in theory, with and without the 'www' do not necessarily point to the same thing (i.e., there is nothing at teamchad.org, you must use www.teamchad.org) it would not make sense to add it to the systemOn 8/26/05, Kishore Balakrishnan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Greetings,Are there plans to implement auto consolidation of URLs with and without www When a user posts http://www.reddit.com , the system should autochange to http://reddit.comCheers, Kishore.-- http://www.kishore.orghttp://www.carnatic.com___discuss mailing listdiscuss@del.icio.us http://lists.del.icio.us/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/discuss-- - Stephen Paul Weber, Amateur Writer NOW WITH OUR OWN DOMAIN - http://www.awriterz.orgMSN: [EMAIL PROTECTED]ICQ/AIM: 103332966NSA: [EMAIL PROTECTED]WEB: spweber.4x2.net ___ discuss mailing list discuss@del.icio.us http://lists.del.icio.us/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/discuss

So we will not irrecoverably change your url if at all possible (modulo the dangerous# thing.) I think what people are actually talking about are a) if you bookmarked www.xyz.com/index.html and if you try to submit xyz.com/ some other time, it should somehow catch that and b) correctly showing the and n other people stuff. I believe the second can be accomplished easily enough, but a) is quite dangerous. In general the transformations are: 1) remove leading www. from host 2) remove trailing #fragment 3) remove trailing index.(html|shtml|php) Sometimes a url with and without the leading www. gives you different things. I don't know how frequent this is though. Amir I plan to add something like this, but it will not go in until it is properly thought through. I think that _any_ kind of consolidation is going to hit cases where it does the wrong thing, and therefore it shouldn't be done at all in an automatic function. On the other hand, if there was a way of matching two URLs together manually, that might be nice.
