That would be possible, but considering how often we use | in abc I don't consider that an option... If there is no | available, perhaps you could use a substitute character (like a / or \ or ~) and do one search and replace at the end of your editing so you only have to worry about the | once? Atte, when you say 'it's the same in other applications do you mean that other java applications also will not allow you to enter the | key?
