Rochdale - Southport - both gritty Lancashire towns! All Lancashire towns are gritty, and usually wet.  And full of cowboys.  The most famous Lancashire town would probably be Liverpool (though more accurately, since 1974, when Lord Redcliffe Maud redrew the boundaries it is part of the Metropole that is Merseyside).  Even during the height of  Beatlemania in the sixties there were more Country & Western clubs in Liverpool than beat clubs; its true still today.

In the 70s Pete Burns, a denizen of the Liverpool punk scene centred around Erics Club in Mathew Street (opposite the site of the Cavern (then a car park)) who later had hit records as Dead or Alive, more recently was a "star" of celebrity Big Brother - way back in the 70s had a band called the Ponderosa Glee Club!
